A lot of people think that the setup in Archie is that like, Archie is just this unaware schmoe and Betty and Veronica are both scheming to get them. Actually, usually the setup is Archie is already going out with Veronica and basically completely pussywhipped/wrapped around her finger, but can't please her because he is a mong. Betty lusts after Archie for reasons that are inexplicable and schemes to get him to notice her, and ends up doing something like doing his homework or fixing his car only for Archie to go right back to Veronica.

Not totally, its a mix of both. Just depends on what joke they want to do in the story. I would love the current new Archie to do a story where Archie gets in an emotionally and sexually abusive relationship with Veronica until she destroys him and moves on to the next guy

I was given Archie digests when I was little. I read tons of books already, and would get a digest whenever I went out with my parents. Had myself a pretty sizable collection.

Lost interest. Still liked Archie, but didn't pay any attention to it. They did the wedding storyline and I got those comics and enjoyed them, and remembered how much I enjoyed reading the digests. Started reading the digests again.

DeCarlo's stuff is great. Archie from the 80's back is great. 90's has some good stuff. 00's is garbage. Too clean, too safe, no jokes.

The new books are alright, I'm enjoying them.

Sometimes, it's neither and characters get paired up with one-time characters for a punchline. There's even scenarios where Betty's not in the picture and the love triangle is a Archie-Veronica-Betty one.

Sure, there are some common scenarios, but writers tend to be very flexible with the characters.

The early newspaper comics by Bob Montana had her as being in love with him from childhood.

Veronica, on the other hand, dated Archie just to piss off Betty. The idea of Veronica actually being in love with him came in later and wasn't really a big part of the character until the late '80s or so.
