Well I said I was going to do it, I'm going to try to spotlight comics from Black Mask There has not been a lot said of them and I doubt they will ever get big. Still I'm going to spotlight their most popular series, and the one that got them nominated for a Eisner Kim&Kim!...

>Kim & Kim are twenty-something besties out to make a name for themselves in the wild world of interdimensional cowboy law enforcement. In a massive "screw you" to their parents and the authorities, they decide to hijack some high stakes bounty -- and end up in way over their heads. Kim & Kim is a day-glo action adventure that's bursting with energy and enthusiasm. Blending the punk exuberance of TANK GIRL with the buddy adventure wackiness of SUPERBAD (if Michael Cera was a trans woman and Jonah Hill a queer girl partner in crime), Kim & Kim is a bright, happy, punk rock sci-fi adventure that is queer as shit.

That is the worst description I've ever read. This is just literary Tumblr Dirty Pair.

Tumblrites ripping off a late 80s/mid 90s anime? I'm shocked.

I wish they'd make another Dirty Pair anime though. Especially if they got Yas back and it looked good, instead of like Dirty Pair Flash.
>>

You know what, that doesn't sound so bad. I like bounty hunter stories and Tank Girl was the shit, so-

>(if Michael Cera was a trans woman and Jonah Hill a queer girl partner in crime)

Noooooooooooope.

The art is okay, in a cartoony style, I don't hate it. Not something I'd buy though. Kinda like Jem and the Holograms, I was interested when Sophie Campbell was doing it, or Giselle Lagace. I didn't like them making a fat one etc., etc. The other artists they've gotten are terrible so I stopped getting the book. I just wanted it to be like the cartoon.

The story? I lost interest after the reading the first few pages.

The issue with these sorts of stories it there's really never a proper sense of risk

They feel like the author just wanted to show people hanging out and then having wacky adventures free of any tension or stakes. Lumberjanes is a good example of this

Stories THRIVE on conflict. And that's what a lot of these stories seem to lack.

>I've been working on a story that actually sets out to destroy the Princess empowerment genre as I call it.
In what industry?

I was looking into novel writing, like I said earlier I'm writing a book, and it's pretty indoctrinated at the moment to the point everyone who gives writing advice keeps bringing up gender and race stereotypes (only the female and brown ones, natch) as something to fervently avoid. If you lambaste the strong princess character who don't need no knight too hard you'll get a black mark on you if you try to publish

Brandon Sanderson, who isn't entirely free of the above himself, does bring up a good point. Write the opinions of people you don't agree with as if you did. Because nothing pisses someone off more than having a strawman represent their views (He's mormon so the braindead religious zealot thing probably gets to him)

I'm not telling you not to do it since I hate the female empowerment genre as it seems to glorify being a bitch who refuses any help, but you have to use a deft hand

My store doesn't advertise anywhere it buys comics. They do take some trade from regulars sometimes, or if a bunch of good comics walk in the door, he might make an offer.

Some people have gotten REALLY mad that they would not buy their crap comics, or people wanting to trade in stuff they bought (and read) to get more and getting refused. Like he's obligated to buy things back.

They also always ask "what would you give me for this?" and they reply "well what do you want?", he never says an amount first.

Here's the thing, I don't plan on writing anyone as fully evil in the story, but I always wonder why everyone wants a princess to be a hero. Men as heroes come from a lot of places, but for some reason it seems like a female hero does not have to be a princess.

Heh. My book idea came from seeing a fantastic setting and crying at how badly the characters and cultural expectations butchered unreasonably detailed and airtight worldbuilding and hilariously awesome setpieces (especially the magic system). Naturally I'm changing some things so it's not straight up fanfiction, but it's very inspirational.

We all need that creative spark to get us going, most people just never admit their spark to the public

That's the thing I grew up on a lot of deconstruction, Spider-man is my favorite superhero because of his problems, and despite them rises to be a hero. To me a princess has so much power that it's hard for to look at them and think of them as heroes. Especially because of how fucked up real life royalty ends up being. >Spider-man is my favorite superhero because of his problems, and despite them rises to be a hero.

Seriously, you should look on Youtube for Brandon Sanderson's lectures. It's really not just novels. It's storytelling in general

We like characters who:
Try
Have agency
Have stakes
Fail
Don't fit their roles
Self-doubt (to an extent)
Have a life outside of their role in the plot

A princess hero can work, but she has to lose her privilege (god I hate this word now) as a princess. We need conflict. Someone who's still rich and influential kicking ass for what seems more like a hobby than anything else ISN'T A GOOD CHARACTER

Good. I don't want to write trans characters.

I'm from the school of thought that any part of a character that deviates from the norm (yes, this includes transexuals) needs to have a purpose as to WHY the author has them deviate or it's just tokenism)

Like the disabled scientist in the movie Life. Why was a disabled man shot into space when the use of his legs would be very important to maneuvering in zero-g environments? Because he was the right scientist is the in-universe excuse but the STORY excuse was because he couldn't feel his legs and therefore couldn't feel the alien attached to his leg feeding off his blood.

They wrote it so him being disabled ACTUALLY MATTERED IN THE STORY

I actually talked to a friend who labeled themselves Trigender, aka they are 80% male, while there sex is female, She asked me why I think there are not a lot of trans character in superhero comics. I brought up a big problem is that in most superhero universe there is an actual cure, like the fact is super science is so big and gender change stuff has been around since at least the golden age that making someone their preferred gender loses any struggle with that life when you can actually find a way to make yourself that gender. So the point becomes moot. She said I had a good point.

If you want to see how to badly use a in this case a non-binary character and bad token writing I recommend Deadman:Dark Mansion of Forbidden love. The writer made a mystery, and it's was obvious that the bad guy was the white straight male character because you know she was not going to make her "awesome" character the bad guy so this 3 issue story spent time on a mystery you could figure out in 5 pages. The sad part is the romance doesn't even really happen till the last page it's page of this bi-sexual women solving a mystery while Deadman is like "Why am I here?"

Than I saw that the princess saved herself by finding a convenient sword under her bed and the dragon who was guarding acted like a dog, than I though "Wait a minute she didn't save herself. She didn't have to out think anyone, she just goes, that's not saving yourself if someone left some of this stuff it's sound like someone is manipulating her..." and that's how the story started in my head.

It's worth noting that being stuck in an uncomfortable or inconvenient body is a fairly common theme in superhero comics, even if it's usually not overtly related to sex or gender. Also your point about magic and super science is borne through because scenarios like Mantra and that one Dial H series pop up more often than real world transgenders.

The stupid coincidences AREN'T because the writer has a fucking agenda they're pushing in the laziest way possible and refuses to make their character suffer in any way to prove themselves but because of some external malevolence manipulating them

Naturally we want this character to succeed once the deception is exposed and their false boons are stolen away, correct?

New or bad writers hate having their characters experience hardship or conflict. You spend all this time coming up with a character you like and you don't want to have them go through any challenges that can't immediately be defeated.

It's just really weird that this comic has tons of cursing and implied violence but almost nothing actually connects and we do not get to see how the conflict is resolved. I mean this completely basic story telling to show what they are doing. I could forgive this if the writing was amazing. Like she actually tried to show that they are all talk and no substance and get by on pure luck. But I know for a fact that the author is 100 percent serious about their ability.
God every time I read one of these books I just think that bar for even moderate quality is subterranean.
>>

The bar is pretty low. Publishing a comic book doesn't take much, they print a few thousand copies. Getting the money together is the problem, then distribution, etc.

That's why Diamond put a minimum sales amount for Previews, it was getting cluttered up with shit that sold a few dozen copies to retail.

Jesus this is fucking pathetic. You know I actually like the idea of a couple of space bounty hunters who go through hell to pay something as mundane as rent. Its grounds them and makes their struggles easier to relate to and an author can draw parallels to real life. In a better book a bad ass bounty hunter actually having to borrow money from their parents would actually be really funny and humiliating.
But this girl is not a bad ass, she is a spoiled brat who takes no responsibility for her own actions and shows no ability to take care of herself. Can't they think of a single thing to do to fund their own adventures. Futa Kim has a guitar for crying out loud, couldn't she play it for money. To be fair I am not sure she can even play it. These characters have no imagination or drive, which is odd since they are supposed to be rebel punks. I don't feel for either of these girls because this is entirely their own fault.

Honestly Alters was infinitely better. That story actually had interesting stakes and felt like an actual superhero story. I did not like the main character all that much, but I can appreciate what was being done. I think it is way better then some anons have said, but check it out for yourself and give it a fair shake.

yeah I wanted to like this too but it's like a 90's image comic this comic is going to age so bad.

This comic is stupidly good. I really love it a lot. The characters are awsome and oh how I wish Black Mask could keep a schedule.

Black Mask isn't BAD, as much as they're like.

The quintessential 'doughy white upper middle class mid-late 20 year old' comic book company making books for people exactly like themselves. They're faux-punk in the most disingenuous, obnoxious way. They listened to Big Black a few too many times, threw up their arms and yelled "Man what if California, the state I'm living in right now, decided to leave Dtrumfds Amerikkka" and then made it a line-wide option.

On topic, Kim & Kim is typical no-stakes boring shit. The most interesting part is when the trans character goes off about her past, and it's not because the writer is competent at crafting a set of interesting characters, but because it's just the writer, who is trans, going off about their own past.

I have absolutely no issue

Oh good, I cut my dumbass off.

I have absolutely no issue with trans characters or authors. As long as you write a good story with good characters, awesome, I'll gladly read it. Just a pity that the author's blog post ended up being the best part of their comic book

>are twenty-something besties out to make a name for themselves in the wild world
No need to anon, i have been reading black mask and this basically describe 80% of their comics.
