Wait.

Wait wait wait.

So in this scenario, 15-20 million of the most liberal idiots in America somehow manage to get out of their own way long enough to secede.

They leave behind 99 percent of the arable land.

Republicans now have a solid, invincible, unbreakable hold on power.

Why would we ever want them back?!

Break the good parts of CA up into four or five solidly conservative new states, set about grinding the libtards on the coast into oblivion.

Wait fifty years, annex their children.

Done!

Hell, I like this scenario.

So far I don't find the comic too awful. My biggest criticisms is that is too verbose, some parts don't making sense mostly this page >>93829555 (girl comes out of wood floor like if it was nothing, and the parents magically get guns from somewhere) and of this wants to be a serious political comic, the villain is too comical evil for this to be taken seriously.

Also I'll never read the long-ass appendix. Really don't care about American politics.

I can understand not liking Trump and call that but making the US have a literal Gestapo is just fucking stupid and it's lazy writing. In a theoretical succession and military occupation of California the occupation force hunting down militants would cause more than enough war crimes to make your story, but instead you completely shatter any scene of believability with having American forces razing a town.

TL DR: I think the author was lazy and instead of thinking about how this might actually go just said "let's make the US literally Nazis"

Californian native here. Cali is a fantastic example of what goes wrong when you have A) a single-party system wherein B) tyranny of the majority runs rampant. LA and San Francisco might as well be a couple of city states and everyone else hates them because of all their stupid pet projects taking up tax revenue. Then there are the power/money-grubbing politicians they elect who are so convinced of their righteousness, and yet just rammed through some bullshit legislation that makes recall elections harder just so they can protect their own asses after passing another enormously unpopular tax, which itself was only necessary because the fuckers squandered the funds already set aside for road work! Christ, they don't make this easy. I think it's buried far more than the last time I looked up the official figures. LA Times (Liberal as fuck newspaper), is telling us the first 100 miles will cost more than $10 billion - http://www.latimes.com/local/california/la-me-bullet-cost-overruns-20170106-story.html

The official expenditure report for ONLY the month of June 2017 puts total costs at $270,000 - http://www.hsr.ca.gov/docs/brdmeetings/2017/brdmtg_061417_FA_Executive_Summary.pdf
But the April 2017 monthly expenditure was $427,000 - https://www.hsr.ca.gov/docs/brdmeetings/2017/brtmtg_041217_FA_Exec_Budget_Summary1.pdf

Remember that they've been working on this mother fucker since Prop 1A passed in 2008.

The 2011 spending plan put their own estimates at about $65 billion, and that was purely for construction costs - http://www.hsr.ca.gov/docs/about/funding_finance/Funding_Plan_2011.pdf

It's been revised several times since 2011 (obviously, since they said the whole fucker would be finished in 2017), but I'm having a damn hard time trying to track down the correct documents.

From what I gather its silly to do it in the first place but didn't texas want to secede and did for a week or something then the US took it back or something
and now its written somewhere that states now can't secede or it's very hard to
>>
>>93836155
You need a majority of the other states to allow you to secede which is weird but you really only hurt yourself if you did since you would only rely on what your state produces in its borders and have a good budget and any federal money for projects is now nonexistant. It's basically impossible for the state itself to vote on being able to move towards seceding.
California is constantly saying its the 6th largest economy in the world but if it seceded it would be a small farming economy at best every tech, entertainment and headquarters would move to be in the USA
>>
>>93836290
A small farming economy at best? You need fucking water to farm
>>
>>93836155
We had a bit of a civil war over the issue. Secessionists lost, and it was made extremely difficult (pretty much impossible) to do it legally to reduce the chances of it happening again.

Texas likes to threaten it more often than others because of their history. They started off seceding from Mexico, existed as an independent country for a few years before joining the US willingly, seceded AGAIN in the civil war, and came out far more intact than the other southern states. So its a go-to protest slogan whenever the federal government does something to piss them off.

That was the ideal and still is for many. Problem is that Lincoln set that ideal on fire then beat it to death with a broken railroad track. Now in practice the states only have rights until the feds decide they don't. See the gay marriage thing for a recent example. It was a state level issue, but after failing to pass it at a state level even in California, it suddenly became a constitutional issue and got forced down all the state's throats via the supreme court.

Considering that the movement was literally funded by the kremlin, as in dollars and office space, and the leader has renounced his US citizenship and moved to moscow, and that the russian ties are actually admitted to in the comic in the political section, and that Russia is pro Brexit, I'll say no.

No source on my claim, because this isn't fucking /pol/ but 90 seconds on google will show the russian role in Calexit very clearly.

What? I'd say three out of every four people know leaving the union is a very, very, VERY bad idea and refuse to support CALEXIT. The only ones who I've seen supporting it are hipsters, and Mexicans who can't even speak English. And the latter doesn't even know what in the hell they're voting for; they just get driven down to the voting station, are told to mark in a certain box, and are given free beer as payment. Reminder this could never happen for several reasons:

1.) The actual leftist establishment in the rest of the US would be against it. No California means no Electoral Votes means no Democrat will ever be elected again. Cali/NY are the only reasons Dems can win elections

2.) No way police/national guard of california would side with a leftist social justice-orientated regime. These people seem like BLM with machine guns, what kind of cop would fight for that? Thus, their areas would be out of control and overrun by crime by street gangs (LA in particular)

3.) Without federal money a lot of Cali's economy would fall apart. California has a huge welfare state to support to keep its people happy and can only tax so much

4.) Cali gets nearly all of its power and natural resources such as water from other states, Arizona in particular.

5.) Outside of the cities, California isn't as leftist as people think

gay marage isn't some nebulous religious thing in america. I mean it is but not really. The issue is that marriage has dozens of fucking benefits from the government. So it was unconstitutional to give one set of people rights and another set of people no rights.

Another way to solve this would have been to abolish marriage as a fucking state institution and make them all civil unions -basically making civil unions marriage from a benefits level- but religious people would have freaked even more and people would have had to refile and shit. So short term solutions over better long term ones.

Not saying that Calexit isn't a stupid idea but...

>3.) Without federal money a lot of Cali's economy would fall apart. California has a huge welfare state to support to keep its people happy and can only tax so much

California gives much more to the federal government in taxes than it receives. If anything California is whats keeping the red states on life support.

>4.) Cali gets nearly all of its power and natural resources such as water from other states, Arizona in particular.

People drastically overestimate how much water we get from the Colorado River. It is only around 8% with all other water coming from inside the state. I also never got how people think that water flowing through our borders is coming from out of state.

>5.) Outside of the cities, California isn't as leftist as people think

Actually water consumption from local sources is constantly fought over between the city folk and the farmers. Most people that complain about water shortages are the farmers who export a fuckton of food but need that water to sustain their agriculture. This is a problem only if the urban consumers don't want to give up their wasteful usage if we secede(which is stupid no matter how anyone spins it, I get into this debate with Hawaiians when they talk about secession)

Ports are always useful, even if they aren't US ports. We would take a hit but its not like The Bay Area would go empty. It also costs money to move locations and unless California was firebombed entirely, the conditions that brought them to set up shop in California may still be present or at least outweigh the cost of leaving. People also assume that without California the US would maintain the same level of development and prestige. If the US actually got shitty enough for a state to leave and not just piss off the fringe then it is probably not a great place for business.

>>93844165

Yeah, but the joke is that that leads to inefficiency and complacency; so much that startups coming out of nowhere with a good diea and a chunk of venture capital can totally gut-punch even long established industry titans simply because these titans aren't nearly as dynamic and strong as they think they are. See: SpaceX vs. United Launch Alliance.
In Shadowrun, not only have the megacorps rigged the game to such a degree that they always win, they are also arbitrarily excellent at everything they do even though they have absolutely zero mechanisms in place to inspire some competition.

The shipping economy would probably just scale down to fit 38 million people rather than 300 million people. Hundreds of countries do fine with their ports without it being dependent on connection to the US.

>all the U.S. has to do is not accept any cargo through us and our economy would collapse within maybe a month
Why would the US hit its economy in the kneecaps just to spite us? The US needs those ports just as much as California does, its a two way street. Switching over shipping lanes to the Cascades is a taller order than people think.

Yeah, see, I see this factoid bandied about a lot.

That's really not what's happening. Yes, there are welfare flows, but the bulk of the flows from cities to country is because the "country states" are where the Federal Government puts most of its weapons.

This does not bode well for any secessionist daydreams of the city dwellers.

Go look where the US's ICBM's are based, for example. The liberal cities are literally afloat in a sea of angry, and extremely well-armed, country bumpkins.

A cautionary tale is in there somewhere.

A) That is a massive step down and would definitely wreck the economy with all the lost revenue. Aside from that, Cali would only be useful as a wayport as we wouldn't have much to trade ourselves considering we'd probably have to repurpose the Central Valley into a basic breadbasket to keep ourselves fed.
B) The U.S. is not going to encourage secession by acting like we are a viable trading partner, even if they have to invest heavily in Oregon and Washington.

So what you're saying is not only that you're fortunate enough to have the opportunity to go through grad school and did, you did so for a long time. Like, if I remember correctly, your four normal years, and a couple more for grad school. So you went, probably, about 24 years without "being political," and were fine with it. World was hunky dory and you were apolitical. Then you go to "this training"; not a class or a seminar, you specifically call it "training," and all the sudden you come back furious and political and angry and you want change. Is that right? Took one go at this "training" and your entire world changed and now you're an ACTIVIST?

Wait, are you talking about federal agriculture subsidies to the heartland, or are you taking credit for "california's" (conservative san joaquin valley to be precise) agricultural production.

BTW, it's not really welfare if the federal government spends a lot of money keeping Ia bunch of minuteman missiles maintained in grassy fields somewhere. Those federal dollars in and out graphs need to show what the money actually goes to to prove anything.

Michigan here. Guess what? Flint has been run by Democrats since the 60s, and the city council approved the water supply switch that leached lead from their pipes. Investigations show that the Republican governor had no knowledge of the problem before it came to public attention, and that in fact the EPA was basically ignoring all the warning signs up until the crisis.

I thank God every day that we elected Snyder (a CPA primarily, Republican secondarily) to save our spiraling state from the same fate as Illinois. Even Detroit is coming back now, and I can't fucking wait until it becomes the national comeback story while California sinks into the ocean (figuratively and literally).

>Wait, are you talking about federal agriculture subsidies to the heartland, or are you taking credit for "california's" (conservative san joaquin valley to be precise) agricultural production.

A bit of both. You seem to think of conservative California and liberal California as separate entities when its all an interconnected system. Central Valley cant exist without San Francisco and LA and vice versa. I'm liberal but a good chunk of my family is conservative and I don't accept people eating our conservative farmers vegetables while giggling about "shutting off the water" just as much as I don't accept people taking our liberal city money while calling us welfare queens.

>BTW, it's not really welfare if the federal government spends a lot of money keeping Ia bunch of minuteman missiles maintained in grassy fields somewhere. Those federal dollars in and out graphs need to show what the money actually goes to to prove anything.

The problem with this is that California is also big with agriculture and the military and we still loose money to the feds.

It's fucking bullshit too. Not like secession was ever "approved" of but it was a tacitly understood to be an option. The early American foundation was multiple states in a voluntary union working together for mutual gain. Mostly because they would individually be vulnerable to European influence. Massachusetts actually threatened secession over the war of 1812 and they were quite serious.

Then the fucking Civil War came along and in addition to forever associating secession with armed conflict it helped give birth to the new idea. In this new perspective, America isn't an alliance of free states but a nation that happens to be organized into internal borders.

Yes. They refuse to distinguish between legal and illegal immigration so they can paint any opposition to illegals as a broad (and racist of course) attack on literally all immigrants. the Sturmabteilung was made to fight the Roter Frontkämpferbund, because they just came out of attempted Communist overthrow led by a mostly Jewish leadership, and the Commies were still trying to politically armstrong their way to power.

Undocumented is a media term. It's why the accusations of Fake News actually has real weight. The actual legal term is illegal alien. That's the official legal terminology.

>The Court uses the phrases ‘illegal immigrant’ and ‘illegal alien’ interchangeably…The Court also understands that there is a certain segment of the population that finds the phrase ‘illegal alien’ offensive. The Court uses this term because it is the term used by the Supreme Court in its latest pronouncement pertaining to this area of the law. See Arizona v. United States, 132 S. Ct. 2492 (2012).

The thing that gets me is that it isn't a new concept. People will accept new words, but the meaning will remain the same. How many people here are about 30 years old? Remember in the 90s when retarded was being phased out for "special"? Kids who had serious mental problems were referred to as special. That was supposed to soften the blow and change how people thought about the issue. And what fucking happened? Today, calling someone special is damn near as offensive as calling some retarded, because functionally they are identical words. You cannot change how people think. You can successfully change the words, but they will just come to mean what you were against in the first place.

It's clearly meant to divide americans and discourage actual assimilation, which is the issue with large scale immigration. Especially with the advent of the internet.

The worst part is this is where all the cries of "NAZI" come from. Not wanting people to illegally enter your country makes you a nazi in most liberals' eyes. It fucking astounding.

This. Look at the BBC's obsession over essentially slave labour for fruit picking in the UK. They've been doing the same story everytime people try and cap numbers. Meanwhile the people picking the fruit are treated like indentured workers, paid less than minimum wage with the rest being paid essentially in company script. It's literally bringing back 18th-19th century practices that were banned in the 19th century for being legal slavery.
