Studies on feral kids raised by animals and/or ignored by their parents are really messed up and whilst they can learn individual words for things, the full context of language often escapes them. So it's not impossible.

Of course that's compounded by the psychological effects of not being able to communicate with other humans growing up, malnutrition etc.

Cass was raised by David Cain harshly but also with some love (hugs, smiles etc) plus if he was raising the perfect warrior he would make sure her diet was as good as he could make it.

So in balance, I agree with you - Cass should have been able to learn to speak and read. Her not being able to was writers forcing it for story issues, like Barbara not getting magic/super-tech fix for her spine.

I read some of her comics and I remember having mixed feelings but mainly disappointment. The stuff with her meeting Superboy & fighting Dr. Death, I later learned that was a few issues after Puckett left, so is the first 30 issues of that comic the reason why everyone praises the book?

The thing about Dylan Horrocks (the guy who replaces Puckett) his story is good, but the art SUCKS. The guy who took over tried to be Scott, but became later day Scott. Which is funny cause nowadays he's draws basically like Scott during the good years on the comic.

Horrocks' run becomes more entertaining once Rich Leonardi shows up for drawing duty. Then the second negative against Horrocks' run comes in: War Games.

War Games basically cripped Cass's supporting cast at the time. Stephanie dies and Barbara has to leave Gotham. So Horrocks has reasoning for Barbara/Cass splitting is pic related.

Andersen Gabrych's run starts off real strong with a good crossover between Cass and Tim. Then he goes to work rebuilding a descent supporting cast around Cass. Really the only meh part of the new supporting cast is Zero, the teenage love interest. Other than that Brenda and her sntich are fine.

The grand problem with Gabrych's run is it's burdened by Infinite Crisis and the fact that it seems like he was building up to #75 and Editors told him to dwindle that down to two issues so the series ended by #73.

The grand problems with Gabrych is he has the worst issues of the entire series (Biker Pigman and Lazuraza or whatever the hell Nora called herself after she took a dip in the Lazarus Pit).

That and everything just feels so goddamn rushed by the end. You get that Gabrych was cutting corners.

The biggest pros though is that he's got Pop Mhan and Ale Garza on art. Both are perfect artists for the character. I prefer Garza though cause his Cass looked scary as fuck and captured best the motion Scott established with her in the comic.

The thing about Puckett/Scott's run it's actually 37 issues with some filler written by Chuck Dixon and Scott Peterson (but mostly drawn by Scott).

At the core they're character pieces that focus on the lives in Gotham with Cass being the one that effects them: good or bad.

WIth the overall subplot being A.) Cass embracing the lifestyle of a vigilante without having a life beyond it. Something Barbara wants her to have. B.) Cass having a death wish for murdering that one person which leads into Shiva which is an epic fight by itself.

I will say this. Puckett stuff is good character building but there are a bit of flaws to it. The convenient telepath who "fixes" Cass's head so she can narrate from now on.

I'm speaking more of the New 52 when she was reintroduced. The modern Batwoman was created by Morrison, Rucka, and Alex Ross (who's design was originally for Barbara). DC was going to spin her off at somepoint in 52 series with her own ongoing written by Devin Grayson.

There were scripts handed in. Art? I don't remember. All that I do is that this ongoing was the reason Cassandra's was canceled because one too many female minority Bat comics at the time was one too many. Now we have two redhead female Bat ongoings. Dixon gave her the elements of friendship with Stephanie and a bond that grew with her and Tim. Basically, he gave her the supporting cast besides just Barbara, Bruce, and David. To be with her fellow young Bats.

Puckett took off with the idea what Dixon put in. Honestly? My favorite writer is still Puckett. But Dixon is up there. Gabrych is probably my third favorite with Joe Kelly for the Kon, Cass, and Tim hijinks in that one lone Superboy issue.

I kind of hope DC just gives Dixon a Tim, Steph, and Cass ongoing now that he's back in the fold. Just let him write all three characters in one ongoing No subtextual threesome even if it is logical.

Does anyone else feel like they just sort of missed out on this era of the Batbooks? It feels like there's a huge contingent of /co/mrades who are deeply attached to Cass, Steph, and Tim, presumably because that's what they grew up on. It's almost like Johns' attachment to the Silver Age. I mean, I think Cass as a character is interesting, but I certainly don't obsess over her.

A part of it is because this is around the time when the "family" aspect of the Batfamily began to ratchet up. The roster of characters expanding combined with the writers seeming to collectively decide to put Batman at around his early 40's came together to create a much larger emphasis on the characters attached to Batman who were having their own adventures, one that comes together in the Tim/Cass/Steph dynamic very well because they were all made a part of the family at around similar times and each had a different by endearing dynamic with one another. I didn't read this era of the books until I was twenty but I could still see how endearing it was by those three character's dynamic alone.

To be fair, the whole reason Barbara was created in the first place was to head off Fred Wertham's accusations that Batman and Robin were having gay pederast sex. Thing about that is that it works well with Batman because he isn't really "super" and the Arkham Asylum game makes it apparent with Bat's suit getting more and more worn down as the game progresses and he even gets a bit of stubble and dirt going IIRC.
A lot of supers just wouldn't have the same effect in these situations because then it stops being about "being trapped in a building with the worst" to "the worst being trapped in a building with you".
The recent spiderman games suffer from this in the Arkham-esque stealth/combat sections.
Batman and by extension the batfamily, just feel right in these kinds of situations because their power and the power of their villains are pretty low tier to begin with and without proper care they can end up dying to a normal dude, and this awareness of their mortality is what makes it.

At least Gwenpool threads talk about the comic and news about Gwen, on top of the general autism, waifu posting and people going to the threads just to call it garbage, even if by virtue of it currently having a run.
Raven threads are a constant 24 hours of anons reposting Raven fanart which is mostly Teen Titans cartoon Raven, waifu posting and ass worship until the thread dies and someone makes another one.
Don't get me wrong, I couldn't really care less about these characters beyond their appearance and my experience with these threads stem from me being bored, but if talking autism and annoyance, I'd say Raven threads win, hands down.

ITs sucha damn shame, the Batfamily has such potential and is so interesting, but it keeps getting cut down by boring dorks who want Batman to be a loner and want to simplify the batfamily. and it never works, it just leads to the batfamily spreading with more characters and stomping over existing ones. Cass' scars were even a prominent thing in her own series they were mentioned a handful of times and only drawn when needed. We saw her in a bikini with hardly a scratch. It was in Batman and the Outsiders when she got the infamous scars shown for the first time, and that was long after her resurrection.
