http://time.com/4855481/kermit-actor-on-leaving-muppets/

>On Thursday, Whitmire responded to speculation around the circumstances of his departure in a personal blog post, stating that it was not his choice to leave the role. "For me the Muppets are not just a job, or a career, or even a passion. They are a calling, an urgent, undeniable, impossible to resist way of life," he wrote of his career. "This is my life’s work since I was 19 years old. I feel that I am at the top of my game, and I want all of you who love the Muppets to know that I would never consider abandoning Kermit or any of the others because to do so would be to forsake the assignment entrusted to me by Jim Henson, my friend and mentor, but even more, my hero."
Whitmire continued to note that he was told by Muppets Studio executives in October 2016 that the role of Kermit would be recast. "I have offered multiple remedies to their two stated issues which had never been mentioned to me prior to that phone call. I wish that we could have sat down, looked each other in the eye, and discussed what was on their minds before they took such a drastic action," said, adding that he retained hope that Disney would "reverse their course" in the ensuing nine months. Ultimately, they did not.
"I just want you all to know that I am sorry if I have disappointed any of you at any point throughout our journey, and to let everyone know that I am devastated to have failed in my duty to my hero," he concluded. He noted that the website he set up — on which his note is posted — is intended to be "a place to connect and share on all things Muppet, past, present and future."In a statement released to TIME, a spokesperson for The Muppets Studio wrote: "The Muppets Studio thanks Steve for his tremendous contributions to Kermit the Frog and The Muppets franchise. We wish him well in his future endeavors."
>>
but that is none of my concern
>>
>Sacks Kermit's voice for no reason

whats wrong with Disney
>>
>>93826110
>We wish him well in his future endeavors.
That's basically machine code for "Fuck him."
>>
what did he do? Was it politics?
>>
>>93826110
>their two stated issues

What could they possibly have been? Why didn't he tell the public what they were?
>>
Disney is ice cold.
>>
>>93826246

It's always politics.
>>
>>93826110
>I am devastated to have failed in my duty to my hero"
Fuck you Disney for making him think that. I firmly believe that Steve lived up to Jim's legacy.
>>
>>93826246
>>93826263
Put it this way: he wasn't known as Steve "She's 18 in Frog Years" Whitmire for jothing. Disney did the right thing and protected themselves.
>>
Thats fckg fine, Steve say a lot of BS about our loved president
>>
>>93826110
>I would never consider abandoning Kermit or any of the others because to do so would be to forsake the assignment entrusted to me by Jim Henson, my friend and mentor, but even more, my hero.

That's not how copyrights work.
>>
God damn it Disney could you at least pretend your not a soulless corporation
>>
Damn at least give us a hint as to what the reasons were. It couldn't have been a pay issue because I feel like Steve wouldn't care about that.
>>
>>93826263
>Kermit needs to be more "hip"
>We want Kermit to be funnier/wackier
I imagine it was a couple of bullshit demands like this, something that cant really be quantified so they can sack the actor regardless of any changes they might be willing to make.
>>
>>93826246
>Was it politics?
Wouldn't doubt it. Disney/ABC just dropped Tim Allen's popular "Last Man Standing" series because Allen is a Trump supporter.
>>
>>93826314
Show me them sources you dirty, stinking liar.
>>
>>93826385
Remember "muh feelings!"

I'll believe this when we have 100% confirmation that Steve wrote this statement.
>>
>>93826318

It was a Pepe the frog related, Steve was using his Kermit voice to spout Pepe memes and someone recorded it.

Holy shit. That's beautiful and I believe him. I'm never turned when actors complain about being fired, but I am absolutely on Whitmire's side reading this.
>>
>>93826110
I seriously want to know their reason for firing him. As it is, that is really, really cold.
>>
>>93826469
Ike's democrat. Trump was democrat until the 90s.

Mcu is aploitical with a conserative view on who is a hero.
>>
>>93826726
Two reasons, he says, that they had never brought up before and he was willing to adjust to. I wonder what they are.
>>
>>93826385
>because Allen is a Trump supporter.
No, he's not even that. He just said he didn't hate the guy.
>>
>>93826764
Ike was kicked out of Marvel Studios, 'member? He just runs the comics now.
>>
>>93826798
Yeah. But the tv and cartoonstill is close to the comics. We still get synergy from the shows.

While the licences are up to both disney and ike.
>>
Jeesh, the guy's literally been involved with Muppets since the fucking OG Muppet Show and they do him like that?

Shit's fucked, yo.

No wonder Frank Oz doesn't get involved anymore.
>>
>>93826773
But I want to know what exactly those reasons were. It sounds like whatever they were, they weren't scandals. Especially with how he addresses it.
>>
>>93826860
>No wonder Frank Oz doesn't get involved anymore.
I think he knew Disney was gonna start kicking out the old timers and start straying away from what Jim had in mind, so he got out before he said something or pissed somebody off.
>>
>>93826860
Seriously. I usually stay out of the "*Insert Company* is bad" thing, but this is straight up cold.
>>
>>93826679

This totally breaks my heart. Guy had no reason to be kicked out of his life's work.
>>
>>93826371
Oh joy something Kermit just flat out isn't. He's the put upon straight man. He can be funny but that always lies in a witty barb retort to someones displeasure.
>>
>>93826778
And his show wasn't liberal and cut into liberals as a modern Archie Bunker.

Which was okay when it was an Island in a sea of liberalism. But now the oceans have receded and they see its part of the country.

Can't have that.
>>
>>93826385
Politics in business terms means something different dude, like pissing off the wrong people.
>>
>>93826485
You're thinking of Elmo. Kermit was voiced by Jim Henson before Whitmire, and nobody before that.
>>

>>

Why doesn't he come back and show them what the Muppets are, as a director?

All I can find in Google is this:
https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/57ua5s/til_that_while_danny_trejo_was_filming_his_cameo/

>TIL that while Danny Trejo was filming his cameo in "The Muppets: Most Wanted!" his mother passed. The cast all offered their sympathy but he shrugged it off because of his 'tough guy' persona. It wasn't until Steve Whitmire apologized in character as Kermit the Frog that Trejo broke down crying.

I did also find this: http://www.toughpigs.com/steve-whitmire-news/
It's nothing new, but it notes that Matt Zogel was the performer for Constantine, the Kermit impersonator in "Muppets Most Wanted", so that softens the blow a bit.

Anyways, I've got nothing. Just a story about Danny Trejo.

>>
>>93826385
I wish this meme would die. It was booted for a combination of reasons. Time Allen has said he doesn't hate Trump but he makes fun of both sides on the show.

It was cancelled because of high production costs and the construction in Disney Tokyo. It wasn't the only thing to get axed either.

Conservative fucks just wanted another thing to point at and say filthy liberals took muh show
>>
>>93832437
You mean Shanghai.

Tokyo's been around for over 30 years and isn't even owned by Disney themselves.
>>
>>93832524
On the topic, Disneyland Paris is the one that failed at launch, right?
>>
>>93832740
Yeah, and the repercussions of that rough launch fucked things up in park development for over a decade.
>>
>>93832437
Yeah, wasn't Allen poised to get a huge raise for the next season? Costs were probably too high for the show to keep going based on returns
>>
>>93832259
It had the best ratings of its time slot, it was down 38% from its 1st season. The only time it was #1 recently was the finally, it was beaten by MacGyver every other week.
>>
>>93832437
>It was cancelled because of high production costs

Plus it's owned by 20 Century Fox so ABC would be taking on that additional cost and risk while not being able to make it back off of DVD sales.
>>
>>93826110
I hope Matt Vogel can do well as Kermit
>>

Ike only ever met Trump once: At a charity fundraiser that they both coincidentally attended. Trump is a "celebrity spokesperson" for some random children's charity that Ike coincidentally happens to also be a big contributor to. Ike is a notorious far-left democrat. Their meeting had nothing to do with politics.

Jim Henson was a literal communist. By his own admission. There's no fucking way Henson would have mentored this dude if they didn't see eye-to-eye on politics. Henson was known for refusing to hire anyone who wasn't as far-left as he was.
>>
>>93833610
Where's the proof? Henson was literally Christian.
>>
It really bums me out. Like, if he was retiring or something, it'd be one thing, but what good reason does Disney have for this?

I mean, if this happened last September, we would've heard about it sooner if it was something serious.
>>
>>93830087

>>
>>93830087
Why the fuck did Disney fire this guy
>>
>>93834500
Power Moves. He was Old Guard and they are going to do Muppet type things he wouldn't approve of and would be the voice for Jim.

But it'll likely be a massive Clusterfuck and they'll ask him to come back. Just like Force Awakens.

So what kind of oppression Olympics mess of a person are we thinking will replace Steve? Since Elmo is done by a black guy, i'm guessing they'll want to one-up Sesame Street and hire a gay black ftm tranny.
>>
>>93834945
Matt Vogel is taking his place. He voiced Constantine in the last movie and has been with the Muppets for awhile.

Still makes absolutely zero sense why they would replace Steve, fuck Disney.
>>
>>93833577
He did donate a million dollars to Trump's presidential campaign
>>
>>93835084

Part of it might be that Matt's eleven years younger and has a knack for imitating a wide range of characters; he might have been open to a longer term contract on better terms for Disney (especially if he can voice other characters) than Steve.

>>
>>93835849
Yeah, maybe he wants to be available if they ever ask him to come back.
>>
>>93835876

There's that but it's also just a matter of looking good to other prospective companies. He can put Kermit down on his resume and look like a boss. He doesn't have to tell anyone WHY he was let go beyond "they wanted to go in a different direction with the character" and because he's a pro he can get a job doing something else

My only problem with Most Wanted, and it could have totally been a badly made TV edit, but I felt the songs were chopped kinda badly.

Maybe its because I listened to the soundtrack before watching the movie but most of the good bits get cut off. The Interrogation Song and I'll get You What You Want specially got most of its best bits off in the version i watched.

I have no idea if the dvd/blue ray is the full cut but if someone can tell me, i'd heavily appreciate it.

No, that was about money. They had a six-year deal on costs (ie any rises in costs, like Tim Allen demanding more money or threatening to walk, would be covered by 20th Century FOX), and when it expired, those costs would be passed to ABC. Apparently FOX let Allen's costs get ridiculous, so when ABC had to decide on whether to continue, they said no thanks, we've had six seasons already, it's probably downhill from here ratings wise anyway (which is true - very few shows get consistently high ratings for a full decade).

>seven years

Six years. Six seasons.

It did have steady ratings at the end, but that's called going out on a high. Nobody wanted Friends-style situation where they were dragging it out without stories and with ridiculous costs going up all the time - Friends got lucky, that was all. If their ratings had dropped, there would have been an awful lot of highly paid people suddenly getting paid to play Peoria.

Steve Whitmire's full statement on this.

>Dear Friends,

>In 1978 when I was asked to join The Muppet Show, the Muppets were the hottest thing on the planet. I was invited to sit at the feet of the true masters, Jim Henson, Frank Oz, Jerry Nelson, Richard Hunt, and Dave Goelz; working alongside them, absorbing different skills from each, as we, along with many talented others, contributed towards the same shared vision, the vision of one man. The result became a skill-set for myself that was sort of a compilation of the best of them all.

>For me the Muppets are not just a job, or a career, or even a passion. They are a calling, an urgent, undeniable, impossible to resist way of life. This is my life’s work since I was 19 years old. I feel that I am at the top of my game, and I want all of you who love the Muppets to know that I would never consider abandoning Kermit or any of the others because to do so would be to forsake the assignment entrusted to me by Jim Henson, my friend and mentor, but even more, my hero.

>As I am sure you can imagine, I have experienced every possible emotion since October 2016, when I received a phone call from The Muppets Studio’s executives to say they were recasting. Through a new business representative, I have offered multiple remedies to their two stated issues which had never been mentioned to me prior to that phone call. I wish that we could have sat down, looked each other in the eye, and discussed what was on their minds before they took such a drastic action.

>I have remained silent the last nine months in hopes that the Disney company might reverse their course. Doing what is best for the Muppets is the lens through which all my interactions have been filtered. Given the opportunity I remain willing to do whatever is required to remedy their concerns because I feel my continued involvement with the characters is in the best interest of the Muppets.

>For decades, you have been an invaluable partner in co-creating the existence of the Muppets, and I am humbled by your devotion to them. There is so much more for us to talk about so I have created this site as a place to connect and share on all things Muppet, past, present and future.

>Please forgive any faux pas as I have not been active in social media previously and have a serious learning curve. I just want you all to know that I am sorry if I have disappointed any of you at any point throughout our journey, and to let everyone know that I am devastated to have failed in my duty to my hero.

He was probably too critical ABC's Muppets, there were a lot of performer rumblings during the making of The Muppets (2011) too but that quieted down.

Also speaking of Steve Whitmire, now Gonzo is without his buddy Rizzo.

Look up the Cheapest Muppets Movie Ever Made

>One of the last times Oz wrote a script with Juhl and Jim
>The movie was going to be about Kermit letting Gonzo handling the budget of the latest Muppets Movie and he blows it all on the opening sequence, the movie would have increasingly gone down in video quality the more budget ran out to the point of Gonzo filming it with old cameras and using cardboard sets
>Oz was set to direct with the project being announced at a D23
>It all ended getting shoved off the table in favour of Jason Segel's script

So yeah I doubt Oz will EVER work on a Muppets project again, especially with his friends getting sacked over nothing.

The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made! is an idea for a film that Jim Henson, Jerry Juhl and Frank Oz first developed in 1985.

Juhl, the Muppets' head writer from the late 1970s through the the 90s, discussed the film's concept in a 1998 interview with Muppet Central:

“ There was a project for a Muppet movie that we kept returning to. Jim and I worked on it and just loved it. It grew out of the fact that Jim was talking about finances and if we did another Muppet movie at the time, it would need to be done inexpensively, since we were using bigger and bigger budgets for all our other projects...So we conceived of a movie slated as "The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made." That was the original working title and that later became the subtitle with the title along the lines of, "Into the Teeth of the Demons of Death."

The idea being that this was a film that Gonzo directed. Kermit was too busy so when Gonzo asked, Kermit said, "Sure, go ahead. I can't take on the responsibilities behind the scenes at this time, but I'll perform in it." So Gonzo wrote this cheesy, terrible plot that made absolutely no sense whatsoever about something being stolen that led to a chase around the world. Unfortunately Gonzo blows half the movie's budget on the opening titles! So as the film progresses, it gets cheaper and cheaper where they're using a shot of the same street corner for every city in the world! We were still talking about this project in the last meeting I ended up having with Jim.

Every now and then, we still bring up the movie. Six months ago, Frank had said to me, "You know, there's still something in that movie, it would be a lot of fun to do." One thing that kept it from happening though was that for "The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made," it still turned out to be expensive to shoot. Things like a tranquil island blowing up with a volcano and such.

Additional plot details were recounted in Jim Henson: The Biography: Gonzo's film, Into the Jaws of the Demons of Death, would eventually get cheaper and cheaper in looks, turning into "black-and-white Super 8 film," then to a slideshow and storyboards. Eventually, Gonzo would gain some corporate sponsorship, ending the movie in hi-def widescreen.

The script was again mentioned as a next movie for the Muppets in September 2009 as discussed at the D23 Expo. It was later set aside yet again in favor of The Muppets.

Steve can get fairly passionate when Disney does something that is completely out of line. There was a minor incident involving Disney deciding to recruit 'alternate performers' right after they bought the Muppets, which Steve heavily protested and only backed off once the program was scrapped.

https://youtu.be/MlJ4ibTOCOU?t=495

Steve was really nervous and apprehensive about how the 2011 movie turned out.

The 2011 movie seemed to have a lot of mixed emotions surrounding it even before it came out: Frank Oz didn't feel the script was very respectful to the characters or their interactions, and some people (myself included) was skeptical of the usually R-rated Jason Segel handling the script himself... even when the movie did come out, it got a lot of mixed reviews, with some feeling it spent too much time on "hero worshipping" the Muppets and less on the actual story or the characters and their humor.

It sounds, to me, like Steve has always been uneasy about Disney's handling of the Muppets, as many of us have, but again, it seems to me that perhaps Disney is just not wanting to put up with him any longer.

"I had done this for 30 years, and I had never wanted to be a puppeteer in the first place. I wanted to be a journalist, and really what I wanted to do was direct theatre and direct movies. As an actor and a performer, you feel limited because you're not the source for the creation, and I wanted to be the source... I've always enjoyed, more than anything else, bringing things to life, whether it be characters or actors in a scene or moments in movies. I've done so much with puppets, that I've wanted to work with actors."
