Nor is she about to let him jeopardize his friendship with Daisy, or this chance for him to enjoy himself over the weekend instead of moping at work.

Before Billy Bag accuses us of "projecting into the alpha" and being salty about vicarious rejection the problem is the time and effort this comic spent on Paulo's feelings for Lucy going from a middle-school crush (where he seemed unbothered by her obvious preference for Mile) to an intense adolescent attraction only to be ditched in two pages and then ignored in favor of some other plotline that came from only the last chapter, as if that were more important and interesting than the longtime prime motivation for one of the main characters of the series.

Lucy not really wanting Paulo fits well with what we've seen before and him having to deal with that could be interesting, especially considering the things he's given up in pursuit of her. But to just kick it out of the way in a chapter that's mostly just recap? Who could be satisfied by this?

You hit the nail right on the head. I've been in these threads trying to justify Lucy's shit (and Paulo's for that matter), in hopes that Taeshi's playing the long-con for some dramatic reveal to confirm our hopes/suspicions, that deep-down all this stupidity is just a front for something deeper. But it's not. It's all just executed so poorly.

Like, I -think- I see what the "intended" message is here: "Lucy's being a better person by recognizing she had led-on Paulo, and is being honest with him, even if it hurts his feelings no, it's better for him in the long run." and "Lucy also cares about Daisy, and wants to make sure Paulo's still there for her during her birthday, even if she can't be there herself." but "Lucy's still her abrasive self, so she'll still joke around, and do slapstick jabs, and her usual 'tough-love' act that everyone can easy see through." But it's just done so sloppily, there's no believable transition in tone. It goes from super-serious to super-anime-overreactions back to super-serious again.

Would anybody be cool with a rewrite of the comic? In script form, from the beginning, in 2006 during eighth grade? I've been trying to get off my ass and write something before college starts again, and the annoyance I'm feeling with this chapter might be the motivation I need.

I wouldn't be able to post regularly, but I might be able to come up with a hypothetical "first episode." I'd probably put the focus mainly on Mike, Lucy, Paulo, and Daisy.

Ideas would probably help though. How can this comic be fixed?

It would be hard to rewrite the first volume, probably. They were largely slice of life and rely a lot on visual gags, so you'd have to do a lot of retooling. It'll be important to stay consistent in your portrayal of Mike and Lucy's relationship. Is it just teasing or actual abuse? Why doesn't Mike treat it like abuse until much later?

I'd say >>93819530 is just about right, but you should probably include a few chapters beforehand if you plan on including Tess, Augustus, Alejandro, and Abbey. Mike and Lucy's relationship needs to be set up and those characters need to be introduced before they go on an adventure together.

Initially this just makes him seem like a prick but then its revealed that he's semi-poor. Not revealed to any character like it was a secret, but just to the audience. His behavior, although not excused, become harder to pin down when the audience now knows he never had his own money to do things with his friends; it was mooching or staying behind of him.

Augusts needs to both seem more dangerous and actually be so, but less than he seems. When he's macking on Daisy have him surreptitiously avoid Tess. When his Daisy plan falls apart (and maybe have it be more plausible that he actually had something awful in store for her), Tess finds out and is horrified that he's been hanging around; when when she and Roger were bullying kids for kicks they left him alone because they were afraid of him; they think he's a real criminal and would have murdered them. To turn back from this, just have Tess have been exaggerated in her impression of him.

I think Augustus can work but the current version is too much of a "wounded dove" instead of an ambiguously dangerous hood who turns out to be better at heart than anyone though.

Mike is seriously underserved in this comic. His character of a seemingly perfect boy who has actually become alienated by and resentful of people's expectations and so clings to his elementary school crush as something that truly belongs to him is kind of interesting, but he outright doesn't have enough face-time in this comic and less of it actually fleshes him out.

She's actually not bad about longish term set-up for stuff. Rachel's attraction to Paulo can be seen in ch."47.5", several chapters before she fucks him to get at Tess and ages before she fucks him again because she likes him. Matt shows up at the drunk party before he's properly introduced later (and isn't as much of a sad sack). Madison shows up in half a panel at the 2nd Junior prom with no attention paid to her. After Augustus goes away in volume 1 he can be seen in panels with a notebook spying on people, although that whole thing never went anywhere.

I bet she has story notes and "Lucy comes clean and rejects Paulo in a Ferris wheel" is probably on there. It's just a shame we're seeing such a mangled, bastardized execution of the idea.

I want Sandy to finally call it off with Mike because she can't be there for him the way he needs her to be. He'll become a wreck because he has no idea how to function without his imaginary girlfriend and Daisy swoops in to try to comfort him hoping that he'll finally fall for her as she helps him get over Sandy. Meanwhile, Lucy will drag Paulo's ass to the party only to find Daisy all over Mike. I really want Daisy to call Lucy out on her shift and vice versa just to have it result in Lucy accidentally screaming about her suicide attempt over Mike. Then Paulo blames Mike for Lucy trying to kill herself instead of Lucy's obvious sick obsession.

And then Daisy gets salty that Mike and Paulo are fighting over Lucy's feelings instead of her.
