Exactly. But instead we get Disney Princess Buddy Movie #89650.

While we're talking Moana, I'd just like to say that my least favorite trope is when supposedly great heroes get "deconstructed" or exposed as frauds or whatever. They did the same thing in Megamind, where the Superman-analogue gives up and becomes a lazy asshole. Can't we just have a righteous Herculean figure to admire? Are we so cynical that we can't believe in heroes anymore?

I don't know either, I think Gwen just switched spots with Peter in that universe, getting bite. But the whole point is what's the point of giving Gwen powers? Just because sh'es in proximity to him? Spider-Man is more than just spider-powers, it's about WHO those powers went to and how his story with Uncle Ben dying and him not preventing it inspired him to save more people.

That's why I don't like the trope. It ignores the moral of the story and focuses on the shallow "cool" factor of the hero and just applies it somewhere else.

....Moana was supposed to be a deconstruction of tropes? WHAT tropes? I missed a lot of the marketing for that movie since I don't have TV, was it advertised as a deconstruction? Because its pretty goddamn straightforward.
>>
>>93810743

Not that anon and I love Moana but it seemed like it was trying to say very loudly and clearly "SEE THIS GGGGIIRRRLL IS THE MAIN CHARACTER AND SHE CAN DO ACTION AND ADVENTURE STUFF TOO" but Moai still just eclipses her and steals the show with masculine adventurousness.

YOU"RE WELCOME!
>>
>>93810765
I mostly just found it okay and I have to agree, Moana's role is....really superfluous for being the title character. Down to the point that her 'journey' requires her to go get the more interesting character instead of actually completing the journey herself. By the end of the movie I had to wonder why she even had to be there. To give Maui a pep talk? I dunno.

Did we watch the same movie? I was actually bummed at how little Maui was actually needed for the whole thing.
She got him off the island, she saved him from Tomoatoa and got his hook and groove back, she gave the Heart back to the Goddess while Maui's distractions were pointless in hindsight, etc.
Hell, besides Maui teaching her how to sail, he realistically could not have been there at all. It wouldn't have been nearly as interesting, sure, but he wasn't all that useful.

It can be done right when it is a first meeting of the two characters, as the smart one is socially retarded to the speech patterns of the second party.

The only time I got in problems with someone trying to smack shit at me I sucker punched him so hard with my steel pencil case he fainted.

Aggression solves a lot of issues especially if the other one doesn't know it is coming, making a scene out of a situation also helps since there are witnesses and people will backstab the involved to save their own asses.

If anything I'm amazed at how little people know about how to deal with situations, fighting is rarely ever adviced, but sweet lord it yields results.

Og course my social background is different, I'm from México so using your own backpack as shield against a mugger with an ice pick or an idiot that wants to fight isn't out of the ordinary, heck I stabbed a couple of muggers with my house keys in self defence at least 3 times in just 3 decades.

Dont let anyone tell you that fighting before the other one can retaliate isn't the answer, it works!

Well I was the tallest in my class and I was...well I am still obsessed with self defense shit since I took Aikido as a child and loved Greco-Roman wrestling enough to join my high school club for two years.

So I am fit, but being aggressive is a state of the mind, and it still works.

Always remember even a scrawny ass chick can hit a Home Run if she uses a steel bat and shortens the grip, a scrawny ass nerd can knock the light out of someone with a hard plastic pencil case or at least inflict some real damage.

You just need the right tool for the trade, also stabbing someone is surprisingly easy, never underestimate your house keys especially if you aim to the neck, armpit, elbow or knees.

Although you might diss me as a sociopath since I'm not sure if I am a murderer, I once mauled someone that tried to assault me after I left a bar, I basically slammed his head repeatedly against a telephone line pole until he stopped moving, it was in self defense but even I think I might have gone too far there, I made an anonymous call to fetch an ambulance and I walked off.

Anyways if someone treathens you the best solution is immediate violence, violence doesn't create violence, it often stops it very fast.

Not in my country. Violence works and actually saves lives.

I'm not a hero and I won't deny its awful to realize you are stained on someone else blood, but it is better if it's theirs and not yours.

Tell me violence doesn't solve shit the next time someone lunges at you with an ice pick, punches you oout of nowhere at night or stalks you as you are on your way to your car.

A common Mexican saying is "Que lloren en su casa, no en la mia" wich can be translated to "If there is going to be mourning let it be at their own household" so yeah, violence solves a lot of issues.

It's boring and lazy and kind of defeats the purpose of even being an alien.

This trope is so obnoxiously common and its absence is one of the reasons I love My Hero Academia. MHA even sets it up to seem like this is going to happen, with the way All Might's appearance looks so scary and fake and American and his true form is skeletal and evil but no, it turns out he truly is the greatest hero who's ever lived inside and out.
>>
>>93829432

This x1000. Not just in cartoons, but literally everything. I hate it when I'm reading a book or something and the main character continually bitches about how horrible it is to literally be superior to everyone around them - like if it has some terrible downside, okay, but if not, stop whining.

Metroman didn't "give up and become a lazy asshole", he just wanted a chance to follow his own dreams instead of being forced into being the city's idol/garbageman his whole life.

I tried MHA and it was the biggest pile of shit I ever watched. Perhaps the manga solves some of the issues but some of them are unsolvable.
I mean first of all the quirk system is a blatant reimagining of JoJo's stando power. The show keeps acting like the kid is becoming powerful through his own will and by his own perseverance but some dude literally gave him the strongest power because he went full retard and almost got himself killed while chasing a dream that was completely retarded but got rewarded for anyways, which is like if Willy Wonka was sold as a movie about a boy who wanted to build the best chocolate factory in the world and the conclusion acts like he achieved his goal while the rest of the movie stayed the same. The big fight finale that was built up to me as the reason I should watched it turned out to be powerwank of the highest order.
But the biggest offender, but also the one potentially solved by the manga is the flashbacks. Sweet Jesus the fucking flashbacks, you get flashbacks, flashbacks of flashbacks, flashbacks of things that literally happened in the same goddamn episode. When he told the bully dude he was proud of his nickname and it goes into a flashback from like 10 minutes ago explaining what he was talking about I couldn't fucking believe it, they must think their audience are sub 60 IQ dipshits with ADHD or something.

I don't watch much anime but MHA is the only one I truly regret watching a season of.

Yeah I don't like "chosen one" or predestined plots at all. It's not only chliche but it makes it to where the character isn't acting on their own free will, they don't achieve good deeds because they want to do so and it benefits them, but because some universal force is making them do it.

I don't mind it if they get into who's doing the choosing and why like "this person simply has the DNA we need", but that's pretty rare.

honestly the movie would make more thematic sense if Herc actually was kind of conceded and a bit of dick. like in the final act he's supposed to learn a lesson about self sacrifice and being a true hero, but he didn't really learn anything he just did what he already would have done. They should have established after he became a hero that he didn't really care about the people he was saving and that thinking of himself as godly made him stop really valuing human life. It would make it a lot more satisfying to see what he was willing to do for Meg.

I do still really enjoy the movie though.

The problem is less that it isn't used, and more that action shows tend to shy away from it more often than not (even if they show what is clearly on-screen death). As opposed to comedy shows, which can get away with it more as they don't take that shit seriously most of the time.

Granted, there are plenty of exceptions (Like Batman, Transformers G1, Avatar, and some others I'm probably missing), but they tend to be the exceptions than the rule.

God, the Belcher family is a pretty much perfect tv family. They're all completely distinct individual characters but at the same time you can understand how they're related and how they influence each other. And on top of that the girls in the family are actually used for comedy instead of just rolling their eyes at the boy's shenanigans. Plus the fact that Bob and Linda don't just love each other, they actually like each other, they have fun together and like each others company even though they get on each other's nerves sometimes.

Not is it only everywhere but it seems to have been done all sorts of wrong so that it becomes a chore and lazy writing as opposed to actually making for compelling drama.

That and the Twilight films have helped to bring shipping to the mainstream with their love triangle.
