Hello, Storyteller.

Two things.
1) There's a Ragman mini coming out soon. So that's something to loom forward to.

2) Um, don't be surprised if we have some newcomers joining us today. /co/ remembered that we're a thing again.

Before we got digital rips I used to like those scans that tried to color correct a little. Probably still my favorite technique to some degree (not really the ones that went too smeary though) over raw scans and rips because you keep some of the paper "texture" but still get it to look brighter.
>>
>>93801600
Oh eat my taint. You know full well that ain't why I have a problem with it. That just happened to come up, and I like bitching about how much of a piece of shit Bruce Wayne is.

No, like I said before, I see this special as a return to the old gimmicks that were causing DC to flush itself down the toilet in recent years. Rebirth has only just started them on the path to recovery, and here they are falling back on what wasn't working. It's incredibly disappointing, especially when we're in the middle of a major storyline, and you decide to launch both this AND an event book? Goddamn.
>>
>>93801694
Gotham isn't the first thing ever to do the "evil city" thing.

>>
>>93801747
Is it the first special? I feel like Rebirth is still pretty clearly delineating what's regular and mainline, and what's for fun, and what's a mini. The first event they did was very small and contained and felt like testing the waters, then Metal and Doomsday Clock, and now an anthology. That seems OK? The events are all Bat-centric but Batman sells, what are you gonna do?

I dunno, it just seems like they're jumping the gun. Obviously I don't object to them ever doing side stuff, but it seems way to early. Yes, we're like a year out, but I feel they ought to focus on finishing the Rebirth storyline before starting anything new. This is just inviting the same clutter that fucked them in the first place.
>>
>>93801891

Yeah the Hawks seem like the most important characters rn.

we (meaning comics community in general) really hasn't talked about Metal enough as an event that seems like just a celebration of the depths of the DCU. it's such a different take on events that we haven't seen in awhile. it must be that fun thing

It's kind of fun to compare this with Mage which is such a deliberate Hero's Journey but is also so deeply autobiographical and about the life of the artist, because this clearly is too

of course, the greatest work on that front ever written is Die Meistersinger
>>
>>93802027
Thanks, I was hoping someone would give us an answer.

And speaking of covers - the two that will emblazon the two trades that will contain the Hero Discovered are already out.

They're okay - I just wish they were more encompassing.

>>
>>93802578
It works perfectly in the form of a comic.

One of the supreme advantages of comics that I think a lot of people forget about is that they're created largely by a one or two people, whereas with a movie or show you've got several writers working for the director working for a bunch of producers, you've got actors and animators or cinematographers, etc. It's always felt like too many cooks in the kitchen to me.

With comics you get some editorial influence, sure, but the creative vision is kept very pure. This comic itself is an example of something I don't think would've come out like this in any other medium.

>>93802703
Not really, that ended up doing absolutely nothing to flesh out the Amazons and its characters were basically completely divorced from Themyscira.

Definitely.
Such as in David Lapham's explicitly creative owned/detached stuff. Almost all of that is the refinement or filtering of one story dynamic.

It's clearly very personal to him, and as writer and artist he can go full hog on navigating it.

And I'm like, it's fine to think it's bad but you don't get to that point of BotNS without knowing the context which you chose to exclude. So you gave more of a shit about retweets or w/e than opening that up to people. There's some back-patting, dick-waving mocking "I haven't read this but" in thread too, I hate it all.

Dude makes a fucking pop culture podcast about the Boss Baby and shit. Got some mileage off of this so he's memeing about the sex scene in It now.

The one thing that had anyone even slightly interested in this book, and it utterly failed to deliver. The death knell of any story is a cast of characters who have no defined personality, and this is a book about an entire legion of soldiers that. Statistically, there ought to be at least one of them who's interesting, but no. Even shitty people invoke a reaction, but OotA was just so bland. I wanted it to be good, cause we never really get Wondy spinoffs, so this one being a big pile of nothing hurt.

That wasn't even the substance of the criticism though. And he picked the deliberately distorted sex scene from the book - like this woman doesn't just randomly look like that, it's a horrible progression you're hardly meant to be on board with.
>>
>>93803353
Aye.
And the fact that it began by disregarding the more interesting ideas of DKSA's ending was always sour.

Miller did say he wanted to do a fourth chapter. If he gets well enough, I'd welcome it. The mini comics were the best parts.

>The funny thing is the first issue actually introduces a cast who, while really cliched and one-note, at least are characters, only to push them to the side for the majority of the story.
See, that's the shit of it. The first issue, while not great, showed some promise. There's like 20 of these chicks, so they don't need to be super complex. But the conflict was set up, a mystery established, and the premise made clear. But then all that potentially interesting shit goes completely out the window in favor of a rescue mission as the main plot. What a fuckin' crock.

I wonder if Johns' almost inability to write platonic friendships without subtext might be pinging to those people as a "female characters treated as accessories" thing?

He's not really noteworthy to me in that regard though. I think his women are fine.
>>

I'm thinking that we read volume 1, read something else, and just keep scattering Mr. X through our reading diet regularly until we finish all of it
>>
>>93804148
Johns was the one who canonized the marine shit from the DCAU, friendo.
>>
>>93803888
the shitty artist from the last Thunderbolts
>>
>>93802992
Forever Evil didn't really need to be longer, it needed to be paced better.

Issues 3-5 and the first half of 6 was people gathering together and a bunch of filler.

Then everything important and some cliffhangers ended up being crammed into the last half of #6 and in #7.
>>
>>93804110
Venditti doesn't jerk Hal off and his John can only speak in military cliches
>>
>>93804323
OH. I totally forgot his name, I just thought of him as that guy trying to make the Thunderbolts look 90's as fuck in spite of the fact that even in the 90's they didn't look all that 90's.
>>
>>93804283
I might be slow to pick it up but I honestly didn't pick up any subtext during his JSA run.
>>
>>93803401
Does Aftershock even have any good books?

I remember /co/ used to like Animosity or at least thought it was the best Bennett book.
>>
>>93804402
Black Adam and Atom Smasher
>>
>>93803532
The Lion FOrge guy being all "you're doing good noble work there against the man" is funny if they're the people de Campi was ripping for wanting her to come to a retreat unpaid and not allowing for her to bring her kid
>>
>>93804487
Ah, fair point.
>>
>>93804469
I thought I heard good things about Bunn's book.
>>
>>93801419
I'll try to catch up on this later, but dang, going out of town just makes it so hard to catch up on things.
>>
>>93804283
This makes me kind of want some macho superheroes who are clearly and almost comically gay for each other, with a completely oblivious female trying desperately to gain the attention of one of them.
>>
>>93804469
World Reader is pretty cool
>>
>>93804670
So Midnighter and Apollo with a thirsty female thrown in?
>>
>>93804369
Obviously bad writers need not apply.
>>
>>93804670
I was thinking the other day, since Bombshell yuriverse is so popular and successful, why not make an alternate universe BL book? I'm sure it would be just as if not more popular.
>>
>>93805298
But anon that would be gay!
>>
>>93805390
Gay is cool as long as you're not the one sucking the dick.
>>
>>93803484
Andreyko comes to mind
>>
>>93801419
> Dean Motter, Los Bros Hernandez
this is the good shit
>>
>>93805750
I love Manhunter a lot

I'm still confused as to how his Batwoman was so shitty
>>
>>93805825
It was a serious disappointment even though I liked the idea of the Unknowns a lot
>>
>>93805298
lol if they did that they'd use basically none of their popular characters. no way any of the male batfamily members or superman would be apart of it

though desu I'd be interested to see how well an uber gay dude elseworld comic like bombshells would do because women like gay fanfics and there'd be a lot of outrage. lol
Who would write it though?
Orlando can't write anything but edgy shit and Jimenez is better artist than writer. and tynion is straight up mediocre.
>>
>>93805825
Editorial probably came onto Batwoman hard.

They left it alone until their whole NOBODY CAN BE MARRIED THAT AGES THEM REEEEEEEEE
But they probably only left it alone in the first place because of the creators.
>>
>>93805844
I liked a lot of the ideas in it but the execution was entirely lacking

>>93805849
It also wouldn't star mostly men because das sexist
>>
>>93801419
>Mister X

The villain from that japanese wrestling show?
>>
>>93806001
Not that one

Also not the Marvel edgelord who fights bears
>>
>>93805888
>>93805298
I wonder who is the main audience for that. Didn't pornhub or some site like it do a survey once that showed that women were watching a surprising amount of "lesbian" porn?
>>
>>93802772
Yeah but there was a Tales of Themyscira book from like, way back when. I think Texas Anon storytimed a few issues in the months leading up to Wonder Woman 2017.
>>
>>93803807
Eichmann, you're a fucking harem protagonist.
>>
Thanks, OP.
>>
bumping for others
>>
amazing series
>>
>>93804491
It's possible. I think the numbers of other women writing for Lion Forge work out to match.
>>
>>93801419
>>
>>93812455
>>
This series had some of the best covers ever.
