Pretty disappointing ending to be honest. I was expecting much more.

Like what?
Then you missed the point of the film. The whole idea of the film was how everything about the X-Men went out with a whimper. Xavier killed his students, the whole mutant extinction is hinted at with all the product placement though the film, and Wolverine's purpose is just to save Laura. If the film went out of its way for "Hey...BUB" or constant references, it would have diluted what the film was, a dire tale about those three characters. If it was references, winks about what's coming next and all that, the film would have been another comic book film, a stepping stone for another future film which would just hype up another future film.

But I understand why he sacrifices himself. What I don't get is how it's executed. I cried when X died, but not Logan. I was waiting for something to happen (not a resurrection or anything but a moral) but it just left a bad taste in my mouth.
Also, the villains were really weak in the film now that I look back.

that sounds stupid

Would you rather watch a film with a fake sense of hype for future films and references to source material to make those who read it feel superior?

Then I guess it just didn't work for you.
