I would have to point to Professor X's role in House-of-M.

That was a truly amazing level of petty douchebaggery.
House-of-M happened because The Scarlet Witch (Wanda Maximoff) went insane after she was told that her twin children were a hysterical pregnancy made real by her reality-warping magic mutant powers. You see, she couldn't have had children with her husband being a robot and all ...
Then she was convinced to "erase" her own children from existence. And so went insane, attacked the Avengers in Avengers-Disassembled, and was then placed in the care of her freshly resurrected father, Magneto ...
... who took Wanda to telepathic Professor Charles Xavier for psychological help.
What did Xavier do?
He telepathically forced Wanda to believe that her own children shouldn't exist, over and over again. He had to over and over again because it didn't take. Wanda kept resurrecting them, and Xavier kept forcing her to "erase" them - to effectively kill her own children over and over again, all in the name of preserving what was real. This drove her even more insane, until she was nuts enough to remake reality in House-of-M.
So what was the petty part? It was that those two children weren't magic fakes, Wanda has a very real "special" kind of relationship with her very real brother Quicksilver, and Xavier thought such very real children of such relationships simply shouldn't exist.
But his best buddy, Magneto, who miraculously bounced back from a recent decapitation without explanation, he gets to stay around.
That's petty.
