One of the best Superman stories ever, and hardly anyone knows about it. Time to spread the word a little.
Interest is piqued.
this is the only good thing McCloud has ever done
>>93780945
He also did a good run in Superman Adventures.
>>93780936
>>93780975
Mulvihill seems to be a good a colorist. Here absence was really felt in Superman & Batman Generations 3.

These guys are fuckin tools.
Keep posting that good shit OP!

Total tools make the best adversaries for Our Man.
>>93781897
>>93781856
I think it's because they're perfectly human. Like, I meet and have to deal with douchebags like Fido all the time. Haven't met a guy like Manchester Black since high school.
>>93782022
Oh? Elaborate.
This sounds interesting.
>>93782133
>Superman needs to check his non-criminal privilege
>>93782084
Well, look at shit like this: >>93782133
The casual arrogance, the assumptions, the bitterness -- that's stuff that you'll encounter if you ever work in an office, or honestly fucking anywhere. That's what people are like, especially people who, like this asshole, had some bad stuff happen to them and developed a victim complex and this "wisdom" out of it. There's no philosophy there, they're just an asshole.
Contrast that with Manchester Black. Terrible human being, and in a lot of ways worse, but he was big. He had big ideas, he had a coherent, consistent philosophy and way of looking at the world. You're not going to meet someone like that in your daily life, so he feels more distant, less real. Whereas a guy like Fido, you can't get through the day without meeting him, so he makes you angrier because he's so familiar.
>>93782133
Ah yes, the old "I'm a victim of some sort, so everything I do is justifiable and fuck everyone else." line of thought, nicely coupled with, "Clearly this guy has never struggled, so fuck him, amirite?" mentality.
Watching Supes dismantle these idiots is gonna be sweet.
>>93782318
Absolutely agree.
>>93782335
Indeed.
>>93782443
Y'know, I never noticed before, but I think that guy at the bottom of the last page might be Goody Rickles...

Perhaps they see him as sort a Dr. Manhattan sort of individual. Good guy but closely connected and associated with the government in terms of national security and upholding the law for good or worse (good in this case cuz it's Superman and not the Comedian or something).

Which is great.
>>93791505
>>93791535

I can't fathom when comic artists DON'T have Kirby as an influence. Back whem i studied a bit of comic drawing in an art academy and the teacher, a publiched comic/manga artist, told as to make a short comic, one of my ideas was to make it in a inspired-kirby style but he told me that was done to death, like that was a bad thing.

>>93793608

>>93793605

It likely would kill organic life if it passed through.

But then there are those who want to be tied up and beaten.

These guys aren't exactly great representatives of pure political thought, you dig? They're cutthroats and crooks. Of course Superman is a "tool of the establishment," because they transformed that term to mean any obstacle which stands between them and their personal goals. Remember, they think he's the product of luxury and excess, a "silver-spoon, Ivy League frat boy."
>>93793003
>>93781087
I love how this touches on a key aspect of Superman that is not too often brought up outside of maybe Luthor- Supes' origin is so widely known to the reader that we take a lot of it for granted, but the average Metropolis citizen has no idea about any of it. So their interactions with Superman are colored by an overwhelming mess of half-truths, gossip, guesswork, and whatever they can make of him based only from his known public appearances. It's only natural that every group of citizens will end up believing the version of who Superman is that's easiest to wrap around their pre-existent worldview.

>>93792924
Actually, no. The scaling tech likely works on the same principle as The Atom's scaling tech, which means the atoms of the apple are BIGGER, but there's not MORE of them. Energy you gain from eating an apple comes from energy of chemical bound in apple's molecules, and a bigger apple will contain the same amount of molecules, just bigger - meaning total energy of an apple doesn't change.
Meaning that this giant-ass apple can only feed one person as a snack, even if it will take them days to eat it. This part still makes sense.

He represents order and a moral compass, which assholes like Fido don't have, and because he doesn't have one, he needs to justify to himself and others why he doesn't. So obviously because Superman's morality has him enforcing the law, he's their tool instead of understanding that everyone deserves a chance to live safely.
People have said it already, but as acopfagI see it a lot. Guys like Fido are real, and they attempt to justify their setbacks on everyone else as opposed to their own bad decisions. They assume that if they are being told they're wrong, then everyone else HAVE to be wrong. Or, like Fido, if they had something traumatic happen or grew up rough, they think it's an automatic pass to do whatever you want. It's amazing how many times I've been the bad guy for arresting the guy who robbed a store, or broke into a car, or beat the shit out of their spouse. It's this sense of perspective where your point of you has to be the only correct one, because of it isn't then you realize how shitty you are compared to others.

Superman has represented conformity, order and playing it safe so many times it isn't funny anymore. The guy in this comic is a total wad, but the notion that Superman is a boring self-righteous self-imposed father figure who bows down to authority is in no way unjustified. It was one of the worst traits CoIE's reboot gave him.

>GO, MY SUPER-MAN!
>>93783507
I could see this being a Silver Age Cover
"We've finally done it! We've stolen...THE HEAD OF SUPERMAN!"
>>93791752
Fido going up to Lex like a big shot is like Justin Bieber puffing out his chest at George Foreman.
The Alex Ross covers don't prepare you for how gloriously goofy the science-fiction in this story was. But I did notice they were based on specific panels from each issue.
>>93793003
>that last exchange
Fucking savage.
>>93791885
Was Mercy hiding, where I think she was hiding?
>>93804608
Fuck you pig. You are a literal tool. I hope you get arrested.
>>93791981
>Can Superman save Metropolis?
>Will Fido finally patch things up estranged father?
>Was Mercy seriously hiding under Luthor's Desk?
>Find out next time in Superman and the Saga of Shrunken Sunday!
that was great and i had never heard of this story before. Nice late silver age feel. sweet dreams OP!
>>93805500
Pitbull pls
>>93797467
He was obviously going to call him a 'dastardly fiend' anon
>>93781032
Yeah - the colors on this were nice.

Is that a DCSS reference?
>>93793580
>that third panel
That's just hilariously corny.
>>93795205
Now that's a good reference.
>>93804577
But Superman still had to put decades of work on Kandorians.

That's such an absurd threat. I love it.

If you flip the mouth it might turn out similar to George's smirk.
>>93809125
Sadly, as mere as it may be, I don't think I'd be able to do it well with what I have.
>>93809166
I was trying to be a lazy fuck and just suggest it, but since you're a true famiglia for posting Scalie Schoolie, I had to go the extra mile (that is to say, any miles at all).
>>93809323
Oh yes! Thanks!
>>93794028
>>93794077
That was a good read. Thanks for posting all of that, man.
>>93808261
that's hilarious

Stole that one from Kord Industries, I bet.

It's India, right? They've been having Hindu-Islam tension for 1200+ years.

Does Luthor have a whole brigade of hot chick bodyguard-soldier-assassins?
>>93782671
Ever noticed how Superman gives the "bad guy" to the cops but the cops never arrest him?
Totally working for the establishment, bro
>>93783507
I've read enough doujins to know where this is going
Good stuff, thanks for the story time. Excellent Superman story I've never read or even heard of.
>>93791885
>literally an enlarger
>could do everything from making infinite gold to feeding the entire world via giant hamburgers
>wastes his time stealing dumb shit and trying to make lex acknowledge him
>>93808261
I think someone needs to use this in the next Reaction Thread.
>>93808395
Zot! was a damn fine indy comic that Scott McCloud wrote and drew in the early 80s. It's the work that first got him noticed before he hit it big with Understanding Comics. Almost the whole series was collected in a nice TPB a couple years back; check it out.
I enjoyed the storytime and I am posting in the thread so that it stays on the board a bit longer.
>>93804844
>He's a pastor in Arizona now. So...
>read this
>"now way"
>it's real
>All these anons shitting on Fido for being an emotionally wrecked asshole
Reminder that Superman saw through his bullshit and acknowledged his pain, and that he even encouraged him to learn from his mistakes and be the best version of him he can be.Reminder that he would do the same to all of us no matter how hard we fucked up, and that nothing hurts him as much as seeing his adopted race fight among themselvesReminder that Superman loves you

The fuck is a Krieger scale?

Literally as bad as the so-called criminals he catches
>>93814993
How do you know he didnt super flick it into a garbage can or just flick it onto the table.
>>93791174
they could have filled 22 pages with nothing but shitty "you don't have a body" jokes and I would have bought it
>>93791935
It's like Superman is Lex's Stand, or his Pokemon
>>93794214
She's one of the original tomboys.
>>93791238
This girl needs to show up in tux someday. The readers demand it.
>>93794028
Amazing story. I've never read it before. Fido was a great antagonist, and I wish someone else used him today. Now this is one of my favorite Superman stories. Thanks OP.
>>93811170
The daddy issues run deep. There needs to be a nu52 or rebirth version of this dude that didn't get ripped off and becomes a billionaire genius.
>>93793608
Nice of him to give Lois an air hole although i'd have dropped her off at a random place early on.
Is this the most underrated Superman miniseries?
>>93818415
Probably, but there were tons of great little Prestige books in the 90s that are completely unknown today. The Prestige format itself is pretty much dead too, even when some of the best known comics were Prestige books originally.
>>93781482
>knows his cover is blown and that Supes has got to be watching him
>decided to go through with the job anyway
Crime makes you retarded.
I want to read a comic of Fido attempting to redeem himself. He said it himself, Superman doesn't lie. He could get up to SCIENCE based heroics.
And Hopper's Cairo-based coffee adventures.
Thanks, OP.
>>93820292
Well his plan went off pretty well all things considered, he did capture Superman for a while. Smarter men failed at that much.
>>93791238
>you will never have a girlfriend who wears a hot dress
Fuck this gay life.
>>93792652
Still pretty Silver Age...But DC stayed there longer than Marvel.
>>93792751
Asshole.
>>93792770
Too bad they can't add Batman and The Joker; if they managed to survie, it'd do wonders for their reps.
>>93792963
Or turn people into dinosaurs.
>>93820279
DC has revived the prestige format with supergirl and deadman.
>>93792790
Jesus, they way the women are drawn in this comic.
Also, absolutely terrific comic! Probably in my top 3 Superman comics. Thanks a bunch OP.
>>93810985
Oh, you just made my fuckin' day. Thank you.
What's the etiquette when it comes to asking for DL links for the stories posted in storytimes nowadays?
>>93810805
pre new52 luthor used to
>>93810537
I got the reference anon
>>93826445
The old equitique was to automatically add it at the end or beginning of a rare storytime.
