My hypothesis is that she's a member of a species of genetically engineered space ship pilots who generate the energy for their own vessels. But somehow she ended up on Earth, she has no idea what she is and she just keeps generating power. That's why she originally was kind of scrawny and quirky, but she gets bulkier and might end up exploding or becoming some kind of kaiju. Didi was an attempt to divide the load among multiple bodies. Next chapter revolves primarily around Gogo and Andy interacting, which hopefully you should enjoy.

After that, with Gogo's presence in Juno Grove established, the story telling will be more casual. There will still be a structured plot developing in the background, with a few milestones as we progress, but absolutely acknowledge that what attracted to people to Bomango was fun character interactions (and sexy giant brown lady). Its been a rough start because the groundwork is such a departure from that.

Two points and then I'll drop it.
1. If you get tired of doing something people got invested in, write a story arc wrapping the thing and make it respectful of the people whose readership made you popular. Gogo falling asleep in Andy's lap might have felt that way to Van but it really didn't end the story. Then start over with a new thing that satisfies you creatively and damn the torpedoes.

2. Van stopped work on the new Bomango, in a page by page format right in the middle of a story and hasn't posted a new page in ten months since. It's one thing to say "I want to be serious now" but to actually deliver is another. I get that he has a shitty day job, but the thing that makes even the most mediocre webcomic draw tons of fans is work ethic and a predictable schedule. There is no correlation between Patreon income and work ethic and in some cases it's had the reverse effect. Aaron Neathery has been slowly dying from a leg infection for years and only now has it had an effect on his output. Unless Van's hands are being crushed in the warehouse he works in, he can spend less time on Twitter complaining about the President and more time working on the thing he supposedly cares about.

I appreciate your comments. I just want to clarify a few things. If you have more to say afterward, I'm still here.

1. Your approach is reasonable, but we're not tired of the characters. Rather, we feel more can be done with them than we were previously. Giving them a framework means we can do the silly slice of life stuff and also explore them more.

2. Its been just over 2 months, not 10, since the comic last updated. The reason for the break was because Van had an outstanding obligation for which he was paid for. He wanted to finally clear the docket and as soon as he gets the thumbs up we're back to updating.

I am very aware of how critical update schedules are. Previously, we had a 2 page a week update schedule which ran fairly smoothly overall, skipping holidays, and missing only one or two planned updates. Whenever we missed an update, I did my best to compensate readers by making a Patreon pic available. You might have noticed more of them showing up during this hiatus for that reason.

Also its not my place to say much about Van's personal life or work situation, but if anything he's more motivated to do art lately.

Levi, in case you're still reading this thread, here's what happens in the book so far:

-- Prologue: Andy's flash-forward of the monstrous crash-landing juxtaposed with the dialogue of his mom trying to cheer him up about moving back to Podunk.
-- Arrival in Cedar Grove: Exposition about the setting, Andy's job and supporting characters are introduced.
-- On a midnight furtive smoke break, Andy encounters Pablo then witnesses the crash landing of some kaiju whose roar awakens the town.
-- The next morning, townies and the authorities are rubbernecking at the crater before dispersing; more character intros.

One day has passed and it took THIRTY PAGES to tell four scenes in an introduction, the thing that's supposed to hook the reader. It will take another NINETEEN pages for Andy to encounter Gogo and her to escape to the forest which only constitute a scene and a half.

You don't have the luxury of this pacing. It's not decompressed and it's not cinematic, it's a combination of two very deadly creator needs at work here: VH's need to show his technical skills and every set he designed, and your need to show off how much dialogue you can write instead of how little you need. VH is going to panel everything you script because he doesn't know any better and he probably genuinely believes he's making better work because it takes longer.

He isn't, and it doesn't.

A good comic book artist and writer need to value the medium's ability to compress time and space through interstitials and editing because 1. the reader's patience is not finite and 2. you will burn him the fuck out no matter how much he says he loves doing this much work.

It's a longer form but it's not a visual novel (thank fuck) where every thought and movement are recorded.

If perchance VH is proposing even longer page counts and you're reining it in, rein harder or get someone else to look over the drafts and storyboards. No offense to either of you.

I agree with your overall assessment. Pacing has been an issue, and its something we're working to rectify. Part of it is due to the switch to publishing individual pages instead of intermittent but longer (complete) comics. The rest is a consequence of our storytelling styles. There's drag there that can be streamlined. There is a planned pivot after Gogo gets situated where plot takes a backseat to characterization which will give us more time to work on it.

Other than that, there's nothing really concrete I can offer you at the moment, but I appreciate you taking the time to write.

No, it's not working backwards from page counts which the both of you need to be doing more regularly when planning story arcs.

Even if you were releasing graphic novels in toto instead of piecemeal like this, the overriding goal in fictional narrative is never to bore the reader or make them aware of the passage of time.

The very first pages are a disjointed mess that convey little at all because they're too busy trying to be "clever" and link the visuals of future Bomango with inane travel chatter.

The comic is aimless on a fundamental level. You can't just fix the pacing when nothing of value is being presented.
