Warner pushed super hard for the New 52. It was their equivalent to Ike's Inhumans push, complete with petty kikery. They didn't want to pay Siegel/Schuster's families for the classic Superman costume so they erased it from history.
Johns was just a yes-man but now that he's higher up he's able to do his own thing, which is where Rebirth comes in.
