In his Nemesis review, Mike says that the picard hair photo scene shows the filmmakers contempt for the audience, but he sucks off The Wrath of Khan even though it had the scene where Chekov, the only cast member who wasnt in season 1, is the one the filmnakers pick to react to the Botany Bay like we're supposd to think he was there in the space seed episode.
Id the the filmmakers caed in the way Mike says that nemesis doesn't, they wouldn't have used the ONE guy who wasn't one the show, regardless of whether or not he could have been serving on in the ship at that time.

That's not quite the same.

Chekov knowing about the Botany Bay episode was a mistake with regards to the universe. He wasn't established in being there at the time. Maybe he looked up the logs (which to be fair is a Chekov thing to do), but he likely wasn't there and so someone else should have been the one to bring up the connection.

The young Picard not having hair (despite TNG showing a young Picard having hair) was a mistake towards the viewer

It'd be like if Anakin looked like Vader in RotJ.
It'd be stupid if he looked like a bloated pale scarred man.

When you look at the motives behind the decisions to make such things so, the hairy Picard thing is so much worse than the Chekov thing. The latter assumes we haven't seen TOS and the former assumes we don't know how fucking people age.

Rebels isn't going to keep him alive. Last season proved the writers aren't as clever as we take them to be. Not to say they're (always) bad writers, but they're not going to keep Thrawn alive when they've already established a lot of ground without him in the OT era and post RoTJ.

Particularly, there cannot be any obstruction to the path of The First Order. The new Lucasfilm has promised a streamlined, universally comprehensible canon. We've already seen the roots of the First Order in Aftermath (and related works) and it's a path without Thrawn. Having Thrawn, said to be one of the Empire's most foremost leaders - and who had previously been shown to have lead an Imperial faction on his own - would complicate the story.

You'll also have people asking "why didn't Luke/Leia/Han/Chewie and co. encounter Thrawn?" or "why wasnt Thrawn do x/didn't Thrawn do (thing) during (RO/OT event)?"

Plus they've already indicated Thrawn's demise with the Bendu's prophecy - they'll be sure to follow through with that.

I'm going to tell you how I think it's going to go down: about 9 months from now the final season of Rebels will conclude with Thrawn's death. It will come off as a super bullshit way for him to die and a lot of people will be shitting up this general debating about it. Few will be happy and everyone will be grumpy. Ultimately we'll let it go and focus on something else (like
censored pornography).

The only way I see him living is if they've got a plan for him in the Sequel Trilogy, but that's doubtful judging by how it's going.

tl;dr Thrawn's going to die because it's virtually the only way they can avoid any continuity issues in the new canon. He'll only live if they've got a plan for him in the ST era.

The only people who don't like the Original Thrawn Trilogy are the ones who haven't read it.
Cannon or not it has to be equal to fun levels of the Original trilogy. Killing him off so soon would be a waste of what might be the best Post ROTJ Villain. I have not seen the Rebel Cartoon in whole but it does little to give Thrawn the Villain Credit he deserves. Not including him in the New Trilogy is the worst decision made by Disney.

Yeah, even in Legends there were technically only four IG-88 models, all of them operated as a team carrying on the illusion of there being just one IG-88 rather than four identical ones. Most people didn't know this so as far anyone was concerned there really was just one IG-88.

I wouldn't be surprised if canon keeps the part about the IG-88 blowing up the lab that created it, but just changes it so that it's a single droid rather than four of them.

I've always posited that watching disillusioned, failed, fatalistic Luke drag himself out of a rut is far more interesting premise than having him successfully rebuild the Order and be a perfect Force God whose flawless work gets complicated by a complete outside influence. You know, for all the hatred the ST gets for being so safe and predictable, the direction they chose for Luke is actually really risky compared to what the fans wanted and expected. It reminds me of how the prequels subverted peoples' expectations and ideas of what the Republic and the Jedi Order were like. Just wait, in 15 years we'll get thinkpieces praising the ST's "bold" storytelling choices like we do for the PT now.

Of course, JJ's idiotic execution understandably soured the concept. It's easy to paint Luke as a complete, incompetent failure from the little we got of him in TFA and given how the SW fandom loves to overreact and lose themselves in a hyperbole, doing such a hack job of presenting Luke in VII just invited the drama in.

What a fucking stop gap of a movie.

It's a good point. There's much more drama in watching Luke pull himself back together. Just that brief wordless image of Luke Skywalker: Human Disaster at the end was almost worse than nothing. I think I'm finally coming around to the state of the galaxy by the time of TFA. Naturally Palpatine would have destroyed almost all Jedi works to the point that learning anything about the order would be nearly impossible. You have to remember that the Empire is inspired by the Nazis so naturally they would have 'book burnings' on anything related to Jedi. Luke would probably have an extremely hard time finding out anything about the Jedi that could be used to make a new order. Then Luke would probably want to hide from his padawans that his father was Darth Vader so when they find out (especially when his nephew finds out) it would cause massive trust issues with Luke. Then you have to factor in that Luke probably told these padawans about all the good things Anakin did so when Ben finds out that the same man who saved people during the Clone Wars was Darth Vader he would naturally begin thinking of Vader as a better person than most people and questioning everything he knew about Vader. Like imagine if historians found out that Jesus Christ was also Genghis Khan. You would probably suddenly see many Christian churches trying to justify Khan's horrible actions and question if claims that Khan killed 10% of the human population were even real or if they were real if they were somehow justified.

Then if the New Republic were to be a fuck up naturally you would see people questioning if the Empire was a better system. Keep in mind this happens irl when you see a huge movement of people justifying the Soviet Union or Nazi Germany because they feel capitalism has failed. It's only natural that Palpatine would have some plan put in place in case he died that would ensure that the Empire lived on in secret to fuck up the New Republic.

The story was fine, although I think we could've gotten a little bit more buildup to the Queen attempting to ensnare Luke and some of the big moments kinda fell flat to me. Luke and Aphra had some good character moments, but Sana's inclusion did nothing except repeat the same sins that made her character incredibly questionable to begin with.

Art was a bit of a disappointment for me. The first issue was fantastic but alternating between Larocca, whose quality has only becoming increasingly dubious, and Broccardo, whose art doesn't really fit with the gothic horror vibe, wasn't a great decision.

TCW and Rebels is usually pretty solid and fluid with character interaction, with some characters and performances being absolutely stellar. (Cummings as Hondo, Witwer as Maul, DBB as the Clones, and Eckstein as Ahsoka come to mind)

You're probably just not liking the way Bendu talks. I personally like it, it reminds me of Yoda without the same kind of talking quirks.

Dave is good at writting, and he does NOT write the final dialog for the episodes. Being a director and a show runner means he will guide the story, often times making episode ideas from the ground up. I think his work is better when filtered through a team though, like Lucas. I don't think anybody is mad at you, it's just most people really like Bendu, and most people here LOVE Filoni (Why wouldn't he, he has contributed so much Star Wars that we love)

So people get defensive at something that could be construed as saying Filoni fucked something up. And sure he isn't perfect, nobody is, but saying he might have struggled with writing dialogue is a pretty bold claim when he has helped bring dozens of characters to life.

And any good writer (or creative head) is always going to be stronger with a good team, that's a no-brainer. Filoni has had this since 2008 at Lucasfilm. I am a little curious to see how much of TCW and Rebels is Filoni's own writing, but I don't think it would reveal any answers to why the writing for Bendu is the way it is. Especially considering I, unlike you, actually quite like Bendu's dialogue.

It introduced Palpatine's scorched galaxy tactic that is the basis for Aftermath's books and the first part of the Inferno Squad story in BFII. It also introduced the force tree saplings that are going to be showing up in TLJ. And whether you like the character or not, Shattered Empire is set up to give Poe his early life background for both TFA and his comic.

I guess? I think you need to do actual worldbuilding to actually count, though. The Poe comic hasn't really done much of that- we've gotten some glimpses of stuff outside the Resistance/First Order fight but generally it doesn't stray very far from familiar territory. There's been a few exceptions but they're rare and get brushed aside very quickly.

You have to look at it as more than just being about Lando. While he is the main attraction of it, everything in canon is being made in a way to set up something else that will pop up eventually, or support something that popped up before it. The Lando comic sets up Sith magic bullshit with artifacts that becomes a plot point in Empire's End (Yupe's Sith armor collection being used to disrupt Jakku and make it explode).
It also brings a first look into all the yachts that Palpatine uses in his secret bases scattered throughout the galaxy. Empire's End, again, mentions that the yachts are used to transport important artifacts sometimes, and even goes to mention a yacht getting stolen and blown up some years prior.
Taking a step past the Lando comic with that plot point, the whole yacht thing sets up the last of the Empire's command fleeing to the Unknown Regions to start the FO, and explains where Phasma's armor came from (TFAVD says it was made from one of Palpatine's yachts - the one that is used in Empire's End most likely)

tl;dr - even things that focus on one character focus on adding details to the galaxy that are important in other pieces of media that come out later/came out prior and shouldn't be regarded as irrelevant if the main focus character is boring.

I think what anons are talking about is how, when writing a story, your characters should speak fluidly, and communicate ideas clearly. That does not mean that each character having their own voice isnt important, but if threepio read with no emotion, then he would be JUST a droid, and not a character. Other examples would be Spock, who is SUPPOSED to read like he is emotionless, but still gets enough emotion across to make you care about him. Same with Thrawn.

Dark Empire, despite its hideous oversaturated monochrome watercolors and offensively terrible mischaracterization of Star Wars characters and general misunderstanding of Star Wars themes and events, actually managed to be the most liked piece of the Expanded Universe by George Lucas. It's the only one he's ever gone on the record as admitting he's read and enjoyed. Can you give an example? I don't doubt you but I never tolerated the open seasons comic. One of the big ones in the one shots involved Zam holding Jango at gunpoint and asking him to remove his helmet because she'd never seen his face in all the years they'd worked together (comic takes place like 2 years before AOTC and young Boba shows up). But of course, Bounty Hunter took place right around The Phantom Menace, ten years before AOTC, and Zam had seen him helmetless multiple times in the course of the game well before Boba was even an embryo in a test tube.

The way Jango and Dooku meet is completely different, for one. The location is still the same (Kholma, a moon of Bogden) but the game depicts them meeting face to face for the first time after Jango kills Komari Vosa (and thus wins Dooku's game), and they agree to the clone army deal right then and there.

The comic has Jango showing up to an arranged meeting with Dooku where they talk about Jango's past before making the deal. The entire hunt for Vosa and the Bando Gora is ignored, even though Vosa herself appears in flashbacks.
