What are your favorite single issue stories?
>series that usually explores the origins of DC characters and how they came to be
>Phantom Stranger's one is actually a collection of four different possible origins as told by the Stranger himself, only furthering the mystique around him and offering no true answers
>also written and drawn by some of the greatest in comics at that time
The fucking best
How is there any other choice?

Previous issue is also good single story.
The issue of Uncanny X-Force where Magneto sends Wolverine to murder an old Nazi war criminal is good.
Thor Once Upon a Time in Midgard a one shot that perfectly encapsulates why Thor is great. It is so tragic, considering what happened afterwards.

Adding to this, that issue where some kids are arguing over who would win in a fight between Superman and Batman is also top tier.

This.
Ellis' Moon Knight is fucking comickino.
Action Comics 13, the one with Krypto and the Phantom Zone

This was the first Batman comic I ever read. Since then I have read probobly over a thousand Bat family books, but this is what started it all

I love the issue of JMS spidey with no dialogue
>>93759499
Jenkins is best at the single issue format, the story with the blind mutant , the story of that black kid, and the superhero poker game are standouts of his runs

The Punisher Armory #1-10 (all stand alone)
The Iron Manual
The Punisher #45
Superman Adventures #41 (and to a lesser extent pretty much every single-issue story in Millar's run [plus MAYBE the single-issue stories in Scott McCloud's run])
Swamp Thing #21 (IF that counts as a "single issue story")
G.I. Joe A Real American Hero #2
G.I. Joe A Real American Hero #34
almost every issue of G.I. Joe Special Missions
EVERY self-contained issue of Badger
The Punisher #93
Archie Meets The Punisher
probably too many other Punisher issues to count
most of John Byrne's Sensational She-Hulk issues
probably a few of John Byrne's Fantastic Four issues, in particular the one with Ego the Living Planet (assuming that counts as a "single issue story") and #258 with Doctor Doom (or really any self-contained Doom issue from that run)
any single-issue story from Frank Miller's Daredevil
any single-issue story from Kurt Busiek's Conan
The World of Ginger Fox
every issue of Twisted Toyfare Theatre
Gun & Girl illustrated
Saga of the Swamp Thing #32 - "Pog"
Sandman #54 - "The Golden Boy"

Great issue to be your first, in my humble opinion
Just a simple and fun short story

Most unique 1 shot I've read in the last 5 years
Batman 666 with future Damien was the best I've read in the last 10 years
I don't like GM as a whole, and find most of his writing too out there for my taste, but his far out ideas sometimes really strike me as great.
