There was an article I read a few years ago when LEGO was coming out with their "LEGO for girls" sets. Apparently in their study they found that girls generally self-insert in games they play where as boys tend to see themselves as the narrator. At least with self inserting yourself into a story you can at least make fun of your own flaws. A self insert can be good if you don't project an idealized version of yourself.
What you don't want to do is insert a family member or other loved one, a problem MUCH more common and disastrous, but less well known.
Its more dangerous and damning then straight up inserting yourself because any sort of character development goes against the person being inserted. One will not critic and point out the loved ones flaws. If the loved one is in the wrong then its the writers fault, says the writer because that loved one is the better half
Examples being: Steven is based off of Sugars brother, Mabel and Dipper are based off of Alex and his sister, lincon is based off of the Load House creators son, etc

This is actually true. Most of the guys that powerlift adore DBZ. I have hour long conversations with them about super. They actually got me to deadlift/squat 3 times a week because I fucking love theory crafting with them.

Dikto's eyes, Kirby's square heads, Dillon's nose, etc.

But Henderson, and a lot of female artists don't just have a thing in their art style that is understandably reminiscent of them, it's EVERYTHING.
