What is it that makes Darth Vader so appealing beyond his cool design?
I'm actually curious because the last time I saw empire strikes back was around the time I was 5 or 6 so I literally don't remember anything about him.

Watching TPM for the first time in years, and I am surprised by how bad I thought it was. There's a handful of things I would change for the sake of pacing, but it's minor at most.

It's the way he moves, his voice, his psychic abilities.

A good Vader sword fight has him not doing all the crazy flying aerobic shit the Prequels do, but him moving slowly, methodically, and brutally. His lightsaber should be used more like a club than a sword.

Basically, psychic cyborg brute-knight that just wants an outlet for his extremely pent up rage. It's a cool concept.

His character,
Anakin starts off as a slave with a single mother and a pretty bad life, then is abducted by a cult because he's their "chosen one". Then he becomes a Jedi knight and once the order is forced in to war he's forced to become a renowned war general. He loves Padme but the Jedi Order doesn't allow him to be with her. He loses friends and his apprentice a long the way, not to mention being lied to by Obi-wan and thinking he was dead for a period. Then he's not allowed to be part of the Jedi Council even though his powers exceed most of them because they don't trust him. Then the people that don't trust him force him to spy on one of the few guys that actually pretends to care about Anakin. His mother also dies on top of all of this but I can't remember when so I'm putting here. All of this shit and no wonder he decides to side with Palpatine. Then finally when he seems to have what he wants, he kills his wife he turned to the dark side to save, and then gets fucked over by his long time friend Obi-Wan.
All of this forges him into a tragic character, and that's not even the extent of it. He's then put in a prosthetic suit that causes him pain 24/7 and forced to serve Sheev until his Son redeems him and helps him overthrow the emperor.
Vader is a complex, tragic, and powerful character with a fulfilling plotline.
He is an example of George's great pottery.

I hate nu Star Wars and everything about it now, including fanbase and official stories

TPM is honestly an incredibly beautiful film, to be honest its surprising how good it is considering it had been so long since Lucas had done a Star Wars movie.

Plus the risks in TPM are perhaps some of the biggest risks ever taken in a Star Wars movie.

Completely new faction? Second acts climax is a RACE SCENE? Pays off wonderfully, TPM honestly really stands out, and once you get past the Jar Jar memes, you can really appreciate what an amazing and unique movie it is.

Also, the Podrace scene might be one of the greatest displays of Special/Practical effects of all time, and it hurts my soul that nobody praises it. It basically did what Mad Max did, but 15 years earlier.

Aside from his appearance and his voice, there's the all around badassery, the stage presence he exudes, his leitmotif (which is so iconic that despite not even popping up until ESB, it's now one of the most commonly known SW themes), and even his character arc, which over the course of the OT, mirrors Luke's in that he starts off as a flat archetype before growing into his own in ESB and finalizing in his redemption in ROTJ.

Well I have two answers that might lift your spirits, but nothing major.

Firstly, the author has not yet revisited these characters, but she has said she would like to eventually. Lost Stars became a fan-favorite hit, even getting a manga adaptation, so I am sure we will get answers to these questions eventually.

Secondly, a LSG rep said that Lost Stars is tied to the Battlefront 2 story, they were using the book (as well as other canon media) as the starting point of the setting. Currently, we know that this is most notably going to be seen in the Battle of Jakku, but it is possible that the charactesr of the book will get cameo appearances too.

Mostly because she had nothing left, she was clearly mentally ill, and gave her life to a lost cause because her culture was so strictly honor-bound.

Only those who arrested her. All anybody saw was her ship go down.

Maybe? I doubt it would be a good idea to advertise who the NR are in custody of. But that being said, the Empire lost. With the exception of those who fled to the Unknown Regions to form the First Order, the Empire has nothing left to fight back after Jakku.

Cienna's ship? It crashed and burned to the ground like the rest. The Battle of Jakku was a pretty ruthless final battle, the stakes of the entire Galaxy were on it. Both sides were trying to destroy the other once and for good. If sabotaging the engines meant an easy victory against an ISD, they'd take it. No risk taking.

Yendor shows up in Bloodline (Also by Gray) but that's the only substantial follow up we've gotten so far.

The questions you have regarding Ciena and her mom are anyone's guess.

The failed to seize the Star Destroyer because Ciena realized what was going on and took steps to prevent the ship from falling into New Republic hands, which meant crashing the ship. There's a bit about this during the Imperial academy portion of the book.

Ultimately I'm expecting something resembling a sequel given the book's popularity and the fact that they've gone back to Gray for Bloodline and and upcoming novel about a 16 y/o Leia, but I'm imagining that we won't really see anything until Episode 9 is well under production and Lucasfilm has a better idea as to how to fill the time period between the OT and ST.

You listed Hayden Christenson and not Liam Neeson or Jake Lloyd, you were clearly talking about the prequels as a whole, please stop willfully misunderstanding posts to create conflict, from what you've said I'm pretty sure we mostly agree here, I just don't get triggered when people point out flaws in the prequel trilogy. Besides that, its not actually the actors faults. Most of those you listed turned in solid performances at one point or other especially MacGregor and McDiarmid, its just that as a director Lucas is more of a visuals guy so the very small amount of takes he did for each shot just wasn't enough for some of them.

And in the case of the rebels thing which was also me, I should have been clearer. What I'm talking about is something like Poe's law, where people complained that Rebels had a different structure and lower budget, which I think is understandable though it didn't stop the show from doing some great things, and then dumb people watched the show, saw these complaints and then bandied around that it was kiddy shit. I hope thats clearer.

Not that guy, but the critical acting flaw is really more of a critical directing flaw. Lucas can point a camera at damn near anything and make it look amazing, but he can't direct dialogue for love nor money so even great actors like McGregor or Neeson came off a little wooden and stiff for lack of better stage directions
Although it must be said I remember this interesting observation someone made that the British actors with stage experience made more of their lines compared to the more movie and TV focused American ones, with the theory going that Lucas was actively aiming for something more archaic and stilted to reflect that "more civilized age" Obi talked about in ANH

That shit is annoying. The quality of TFA has no impact on the fact that the aftermath books are not particularly well written, but contain things in them that are interesting. As an aside, I loved Kotor, and that game was based primarily on the tales of the Jedi comics, which were pretty terrible, with the only saving grace being that they had some interesting background elements. That doesn't retroactively make them good comics, it makes them, Critically Flawed works built upon by other writers into better stories.

Have you read Rebel Rising yet? I highly suggest everybody goes and reads that. FORGET about Jyn, Rebel Rising contains the entire arc of Saw Gerrera bridging him from TCW/Catalyst, to Rebels, and then Rogue One.

Tales of the Jedi is bad. The art is rough and the writing, primarily the prose, is bad. The things that are happening, are sort of interesting, and look good if you read it as history. MAybe you don't like Kotor for valid reasons, like how dated it is today, or the fact it runs on the D20 system, or any of a number of flaws that exist in that game, but I would guess by the general tone of your posts that you're a child whose only experience with the company is their existence as a living meme of a game studio.

I don't want to defend EA because their predatory business practices and tendency for dictatorial management processes are terrible and inconducive to making good video games, but they aren't always omniscient overlords looking over the devs' shoulders. DICE are nearly the sole architects of the 2015 Battlefront's poor reputation, with their deliberate tearing apart of content, dumbing down of gameplay, matchmaking only, 20v20, zero communication, etc, etc. EA's only crime was giving them a deadline "before TFA comes out." And they seem to have made an attempt to fix BF2 by dividing development up between three different studios in an attempt to limit DICE's ineptitude

Don't assume everything EA publishes will be bad just because EA is evil, assume things they publish will be bad because the devs are incompetent.

I don't really get your PT OT combined complaint desu, but thats fine that gets into some more subjective points where all I can say is, no you're wrong, and we meet at an imapasse. I said myself the game is old and dated now, quite looking forward to that remake in the works, and I'll even give you that a lot of the set up is pretty standard Bioware RPG, but only because it was one of the first in that style.

I like Obsidian, I don't know what to tell you. I think they have generally pretty goood writing which allows for more ambiguous morality than is traditionally offered in other RPGs. Kotor 2, even with the restored content mod, is just unfinished though, despite having a solid first few planets, Onderon/Dxun, Korriban, and dantooine are like an hour a piece. What can you do? If its obsidian it'll have interesting writing and be released half finished.

Everyone who says this has the same basic misunderstanding of Kotor 2. Kreia is wrong. She's not like some objectivist hero who does nothing wrong. She's a petty, vicious, traitor. She points out these tendencies of hers in others she meets. By the end of the game, after having instructed the exile in her philosophy and giving them the tools to regain the force they have one final confrontation which, despite being a physical one, is primarily a clash of worldviews. She manipulates the exile into becoming someone who can prove her wrong, because she doesn't truly want to be right. Jakku had the benefit of being a major planet in a film, which is a benefit that Mandalore lacks.

For lack of a better term, the Battle of Jakku is also a lot more accessible than the Siege of Mandalore. At surface level, Jakku is just the Empire and Rebellion fighting, which isn't exactly a hard concept to grasp, and even moving beyond that presenting it as a major, war-ending battle doesn't exactly require a lot of explanation. Mandalore is a bit more complex, in that Maul (A character who a lot of people believe to be dead) leading an army of Mandalorians and assorted criminal elements is a massive departure from most people's experience with the PT.

So I think the reason why Anakin seems OOC in TCW to me isn't the writing so much as his look, which doesn't look like Hayden, and his tone of voice, which doesn't really even attempt unity with Hayden's voice.

Not exactly...I believe Ezra and Sabine are 18~ around the time of Season 4, which is 1 year before Rogue One.

So by the end of ROTJ, they should both be around 22~....lets say they waited another 1-2 years and both had Rey at 25.

That would make Rey 25 at the start of TFA, which I think is close to her age, and maybe they dropped her off with Luke to train her and whatever....Filoni can make the story as he goes along.

The mark of a Mary Sue, if I remember, is that everyone is in love with them and thinks they're awesome and great and watches agog with stars in their eyes as they do overpowered superhero nonsense.
There are real consequences for Aphra. She can't keep herself from pressing the proverbial red button, from speaking out of line, and from fucking over people. And she has to deal with the fallout from it. Everyone thinks she's a poisonous fuckup human-disaster and treats her accordingly.
I like it - she's a nicely-written character in that way. And the opposite of a sue in a very real sense.
