Its a double edge sword, but basically because pretty much ANYTHING can happen. However, there is so little imagination left in the industry, that it just isn't as fun. Its either faggots writing an Elseworld's tale in main continuity, or just retreads of what was done before and better.

I like that when making a comic, a creator, or the writer/artist team, have as much control as possible to create their little universe - no bias of what the reader is going to imagine, no budget restraints, not even restraints based on what real living things should look like.

I know, there's a lot of editorializing in the big two, but there are lots of other comics out there too.

they're fun
when everything works right they can evoke a profound emotional experience
cumulatively, superheroes are mostly frivolous deadends, but a reader with immense patience can pick up all the different themes and tones and style that have been done over the years and feel the weight of that emotionally
