Honestly, because this show is geared towards children instead of teens like Avatar and Korra I feel as though they're being extra safe and stale with the writing. And also the 78 episodes that Netflix selected for them to release. Reading japanese twitter's reactions to Voltron has been fun although I don't really want to get too into details since discussing fandoms always goes poorly in these threads but it's looking like it has the potential to become nearly as popular but probably not quite as popular as RWBY (which was pretty dang popular for a foreign cartoon and disturbingly so for what it was), but I'm guessing it will fizzle out sooner since there's not a steady stream of content, so more like a flavor of the month. The general reception is that it feels like an early 90s shounen anime that they don't see much anymore but that it has a western feel to it which probably gives it novelty points. One person compared Galra to the Buff Clan from Space Runaway Ideon. I get the impression that they appreciate it more for the dumb kid's show it is than the west which seems to want the writing to be more mature. Even though I said all that stuff about its popularity, it's still too early to tell if much of a fandom will really form though, so don't expect a bunch of doujins to pour in or anything. Fanart's been coming in a steady trickle, not an explosion.

I just search the katakana title in twitter and browse latest, accounts that were already big fans in japan before it got an official release will retweet fanart that doesn't show up in the search since they don't always mention the title, in fact you don't need to search the title anyway if you're just after fan art since those accounts will already retweet it. Pixiv still has next to nothing.
Really though, I didn't think it would interest many people in Japan since they already have a fuck ton of anime so a foreign knock-off shouldn't have much appeal but reading their response has convinced me that it's probably much more entertaining from their perspective than it is for us since it's a pretty respectful re-imagining of their own concepts and ideas from another culture which gives it a fresh twist, and like I said before, novelty. I might compare it to how Panty and Stocking probably felt to some westerners, although I personally didn't much care for it.

Also, I forgot to mention but Coran and Allura's seiyuu seem pretty into it, it's cute.

By "into it" I mostly meant they're cognizant of it and seem excited for it beyond being just a paycheck, not that they're huge fans that post about it all the time or anything. I keep remembering stuff I found interesting but forgot to mention, but it's neat how a simple shift in cultural perspective will make something that didn't seem particularly noteworthy suddenly innovative. A surprising number of people didn't see the Pidge twist coming at all, probably because shota characters are pretty commonplace and foreshadowing for that sort of thing is usually handled so differently. A few people said the way Pidge so frankly revealed it herself early on and the way pretty much everyone reacted so casually and just immediately dropped the subject was unexpected and felt like a noticeable difference in culture since most recent anime is so mired in tropes that it normally would have had someone walk in on her while she was changing and then milked the conflict afterwards.
People like that Allura's competent, I've only seen one person that hates her for being too demanding, otherwise they think it's neat that she's more like the boss of a gang than a princess.
A lot of people say they aren't sure which is the main character and I've seen some people say that having no specific main character is a trait of western dramas but I don't know if that's true.

I saw one person rambling about how the universe is gonna go to shit if the Galra empire falls, because it's the source of stability, and has been, for so long. I watched Voltron at the tail end of a huge months-long anime binge so I was pretty surprised by how they handled it as well. Coincidentally the most common critical response I've seen is that people who watch it to see the western take on giant robot anime will probably be disappointed since the focus is more on the team than the robot fights and within those fights many of them aren't even with another giant robot, just destroying ships and shit.
