The thinness of the lines are worrying me, but this image is clearly in a well lit though dark area, so the colours look a bit weird, and Helga's wincing, so she looks a bit odd in that position.

Its great because she is designed to be one thing and then designated to be another. Her ugly mug, pink dress and big pink ribbon are there to mock and unsympathize her for the viewer.

Helga and Harold are from the old Arnold claymations, where they served the roles as Arnold's bullies. When the characters transferred to the TV show, they had to come up with more detailed characteristics. I think it was Craig's wife who came up with the idea of Helga having a crush on Arnold, when they were coming up with motivations why she would bully Arnold.

The first episodes have a lot slapstick with Helga probably because of this. They had an interesting character and right to hit her with a pan if they wanted to.

The later episodes have good slapstick too. I've never laughed at slapstick before, but the cheese festival episode made me chuckle with Helga trying to hide in trash cans and getting hit by apples / barf napkins.

Huh, reading this thread while watching the show kind of makes me appreciate and see Helga in a new light. As a kid I'd find her personality insufferable and generally coarse all around, I would totally agree with Arnold on his preference with sweet, lovable Lila.

But seeing her again now, Helga is the type of girl to give you some tough love and hard truth knowing that it's for the better. She would be the girl that would genuinely care and worry about you but at the same time would be utterly embarrassed about it and, in turn never show it. The tough girl act that just melts when it comes to her precious Arnold is just too good. Lila is cute and all but I've ascended to truly better tastes.

Arnold's Valentine still presents one of the best What If moments in the series, what if Arnold had realized "Cecile" was Helga and confronted her about it before the real Cecile showed up, would be interesting to see how the rest of the series could have deviated from that point, it's an idea I'd love to see as a story or comic some day
