Well, you're of course under no obligation to do so, but there are an enormous variety of beers available to try. Especially now thanks to the craft beer explosion. You probably just haven't found one that's to your taste.

You might think about what flavors you like in drinks, and look for a beer that might appeal to that.

>>
>>93705725
It's from "Through the Looking-Glass" by Lewis Carroll:

>"I don't know what you mean by 'glory,'" Alice said.

>Humpty Dumpty smiled contemptuously. "Of course you don't—till I tell you. I meant 'there's a nice knock-down argument for you!'"

>"But 'glory' doesn't mean 'a nice knock-down argument'," Alice objected.

>"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean—neither more nor less."

>"The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean so many different things."

>"The question is," said Humpty Dumpty, "which is to be master—that's all."

>Alice was too much puzzled to say anything, so after a minute Humpty Dumpty began again.

>"They've a temper, some of them—particularly verbs, they're the proudest—adjectives you can do anything with, but not verbs—however, I can manage the whole lot! Impenetrability! That's what I say!"

Studies have shows this to be false. Is most western cultures drinking beer is equated to adulthood or maturity so people are enticed to drink it despite all flavors and side effects just to show off their level of maturity towards the community.

Simply, it really is bitter shit water, but people want to be seen as not children/gay/effeminate so they force it down anyway. Drinking multiple beers in a night is more about an insecure child of a person trying desperately to convince themselves that they are anything but.

>implying this instance of 'male violence' isn't a relatively demonstration of interest and invitation to friendly bonding.

I'm not saying it works on women, hell I think it's big part of why little boys tend to stop interacting with women and go 'hang out with the guys' a couple years before puberty (because they realize their overtures somehow arn't translating properly, thus the realization that 'girls are weird and spooky'.)

However, it's pretty common observation that among men violence and physical stress are the ways to initiate strangers into friends. (part of the reason 'hazing' is practiced, and why, despite their differences both DnD Nerds and Sports Jocks pastimes essentially boil down to 'beat the shit out of eachother, but particularly, those other dudes'.)

The person Randall's arguing against in this comic is me.

You have no idea how many times I'll say something like "Are you going to clean up the dishes?" and I'll get a snippy "Why do I always have to clean them?" or something in response. I ask a simple question and there are layers upon layers of imagined subtext that they choose to respond to instead, when I was literally just trying to learn or impart some basic facts. I get around it by being needlessly specific with my questions - "Are you going to clean the dishes and I'm just asking because if you aren't going to clean the dishes then I thought I'd clean them and I'm not asking you to do the dishes or expecting you to the dishes but I am wondering if you're going to do them because if you are planning to do them then I'm not going to do them.". Which has obvious fucking technical difficulties associated and makes me look like a sperg.

Like many of Randall's comics, including the beer comic, you can see the comic as a parody of both sides of the argument. Humpty is being immature and not understanding how conversations work, but just as easily you could say that he's simply trying to communicate to the girl how he communicates. He's trying to make her understand how to understand him. She's being willfully ignorant and choosing to shut him down instead of improving their dialogue by taking that into account.

On a meta level, most of Randall's most controversial comics have to do with the supposed "smug intellectual atmosphere" he exudes. Is it possible that he's not being smug or intellectual, and is literally just making comics about funny or interesting situations? It is. But people choose to see subtext. Is that a failing on Randall's part, or on the readers' parts?

There's a "didn't get the joke" section after most comics for people like you:

Discipline: Parmenides was a presocratic philosopher who believed that existence was timeless, eternal, and unchanging. The change that we appear to see is only an illusion due to how we perceive the world.

Presentation: Zeno of Citium was the founder of Stoicism, which held that the path to happiness was living "according to nature", meaning for the Stoic according to the universal reason that is in nature. Things beyond our control shouldn't effect our happiness, because happiness stems only from virtue. So if bad things exist, we should rationally accept that they exist, and they should cause us no suffering.

Gossip: Democritus was an early Atomist, believing that atoms (objects which could no longer be divided into smaller parts) were the only things that exist. For Democritus, there were still many different kinds of atoms, possibly infinitely many, but larger objects that were composed of the atoms didn't properly exist. He believed the world was totally determined by the causal interaction of the atoms.

Excuse: Zeno of Elea was famous for his many paradoxes, most of which were proving that motion is impossible. Similar to how Parmenides believed that time was an illusion, Zeno thought his paradoxes logically showed that motion must be some kind of illusion, and doesn't actually occur.

Brainstorming: Thales believed that everything was composed of a single substance (he picked water). Heraclitus thought everything was composed of fire, although he didn't take it to mean a substance like Thales, but more of an means of change between substances.

The Plan: In The Republic, Plato said that the general populations would have to be told a sort of "noble lie" to keep society together and encourage the less educated classes to behave morally and keep in line with the State. The more educated classes would study philosophy, and know the truth about how to behave virtuously.

We'd have to look at how many of his audience don't get his intended message. If it's a majority of them, than the fault lies mostly with Randall and vice versa. However, I'm guessing the sides are probably fairly even. In this case (and in true dialogic fashion), both sides are somewhat at fault.
>>
>>93707173
I have two guesses.

The girl is using her geeky hobbies (look up "neoteny") as a method of attracting provider males who think that's cool.

The young version of the man was unrefined: ugly, short, and socially awkward. Most women don't like that. Women put a lot of value in tall, okay-looking guys. Women don't put as much value the traits that we think makes us interesting and unique. There's nothing wrong with that.

Without getting into the actual act of drinking beer, being conspicuous about drinking beer is a zero-effort expression of maturity or masculinity, like being conspicuous about eating lots of meat or getting a tattoo. Expressions of maturity or masculinity which actually demonstrate competence in some area involve risk -- like doing well in a fight or sports, or getting a high prestige job. Most people are too lazy or too much of a baby-dicked cock sleeve for any of that sort of thing and just stick to the cosmetic, zero-effort stuff like drinking.
Not to say that genuinely successful people don't drink, of course. It's just they do it on top of being measurably successful.

The reason the beer comic gets so many replies every time is because it has a ring of truth.

If it said that about chocolate people would be like "lol what?"

But because it's beer, which DOES taste kind of bad, people get mad.
>>
>>93704206
why does is say KEK in the first panel?
>>

Not always super funny, but I like a comic that talks about philosophy. His knowledge is based really heavily in the Classical period and Existentialism seems like though. When he branches out of that his jokes seem a little more shallow.

Like that Gorgias joke at the end though.
>>
>>93714564

No, it gets replies because the line of thought is asinine. Taste isn't objective. The fact that people broadly prefer things that satisfy our basic needs (e.g. sugary chocolate) doesn't mean that you have to pretend to find enjoyment in other stimuli.

Instead of beer, substitute surströmming. Or, hell, flip the script entirely and say, "do you ever think maybe we should just admit that all chocolate tastes kind of good and you're just pretending to not like it?"

The comic's thesis is that anyone who disagrees with the most common preference is a lying hipster. It's stupid.

Bioshock is unironically a good critique of a society that operates on Objectivist principles. It points out that such an arrangement only works if everyone's fully devoted to said Objectivist principles regarding the free market, which is fucking impossible in practice. Not everyone will play fair (theft, corporate espionage, etc.), so you need the government to enforce rules of fair play. But Objectivism hates government meddling of any sort because the free market must be free and regulated by moral principles of Objectivism alone, so there's a paradox.

Speaking of the government, no FDA means no enforced safety standards. The plasmids were the most fantastical aspect of Bioshock, but it's easy to picture instead a faulty performance enhancing drug that fucks you up the more you take it. The market will finally catch on, but potentially too late to prevent widespread damage. Then picture everyone is putting out these sorts of pills on a regular basis.

Then you have to believe that those devotees of Objectivism will stay devoted even when other, smarter and more successful devotees outplays them. You have to expect these second-rate tycoons will simply give a respectful nod as their betters scoop the market out from under them, rather than employing every dirty trick in the book to get back on top.

tl;dr For someone who despised communism for its obvious shortcomings, Rand was just as stunningly ignorant of human nature.
>>
>>93704997
This is the truth. Somehow my mom unironically loves Reese's Cup-flavored beer.
>>
>>93707331

The comic is not even dimly about subtext. There isn't even an argument. The comic is a hypothetical response to Humpty Dumpty's nonsensical statements in Through the Looking Glass which is itself a reduction to absurdity of Cratylus' theory of language.

tl;dr there's a Platonic dialogue where Cratylus argues that language is, essentially, entirely arbitrary and can change so rapidly as to not be understood. In Through the Looking Glass, Carroll points out that this is patently absurd because it makes even the expression of the idea impossible. There must, therefore, be some underlying rigidity to language.

In the comic, Randall has (presumably) Alice snarkily explain the point Carroll was making. The comic lets us know that Randall has successfully understood a century-and-a-half old critique of two thousand year old philosophy.

To wit, Randall is a very clever man.

All this said, your communication issues are entirely explained by Carroll's original point. You are not the sole arbitrator of meaning. Your words don't mean exactly what you choose them to mean. Language isn't that simple.
>>
>>93715486
>fully devoted to said Objectivist principles

>>93714564

The crux of the issue is that it "pseudo intellectual" can refer to almost anything. It can mean "this person sounds intelligent in this specific way but I'm not intelligent in that way so I won't define it as intelligence". Calling someone a "pseudo intellectual" acknowledges that someone seems intelligent but doesn't address how they are intelligent or what about them proves that they aren't truly intelligent in that regard. If someone is calling someone a "pseudo intellectual" they are almost always leaving it at that, and if they aren't making any well defined claims about how the person is not intelligent then they are probably just lashing out at popular perceptions of intelligence as a whole. And if are lashing out at how the entire world perceives intelligence out of the blue in a conversation about something else then you are probably very insecure about your own intelligence.

As much as the slavers and racists try to conflate these concepts, there's no relationship between them. Oppression at the state level isn't any better than oppression at the national level.

Its useful, though, because anyone pushing this idea is showing their true colors as human garbage who want to cloak their bigotry and authoritarianism in the guise of freedom.

Your second statement doesn't logically follow the first.

NO ONE likes a designed bitter taste. It is a negative feeling, if you claim to like it that is called "pretending" because it is specifically not a likable sensation in the first place.

But there is a clearly understood pleasure/displeasure sensation compared here. Chocolate is sweet which the brain reads as pleasing, only reason people do not like it is because they are either tired of it or prefer other sweet flavors. Beer on the other hand is extremely bitter and displeasing. The immediate reaction known as "Beer face" shows that the body has a fast negative reaction to the flavor of it since it is seen as very negative.

People just try to power through that because they want to look manly or tough being able to drink this thing that is horrible with each sip

All these people complaining that beer drinkers must be fooling themselves into loving it because it's bitter! I mean, yes, I'm probably talking @bait, but whatever, got me to reply.

Do you know why beer is bitter? It's because hops are added to it. They're added to counteract some of the sweetness of the malt, because it turns out that lots of people like a mix of bitter and sweet! You know, like you find in dark chocolate, sweetened coffee, many kinds of candy, etc.

Did you also know that, if for whatever reason you don't like the bitterness of beer, you can buy fermented grain-based alcohol without any hops? It's true! It's called "malt liquor," and you can pick up a 40 oz bottle of the cheap shit at any disreputable liquor store (there are nicer malt liquors too, obviously, but the point is that it's every bit as cheap and accessable as beer.
Usually cheaper, in fact!). Most people don't like it because, without the hops to balance the malt, it tends to have a cloying taste, but different strokes for different folks.

So if you or your friends only subject yourself to bitterness out of some sense of masculine obligation, fear no more! Buy some malt liquor instead (just as manly!), and maybe next time give the hundreds of millions of us who deliberately chose beer over it the benefit of the doubt.

Or i could cook literally any other vegetable the same way.

Alcohol tastes bad because it's a poison and we evolved to dislike the taste. That's why there even IS a difference between good and bad liquor. The whole point is to cover up the taste of alcohol so you can get drunk without forcing yourself.

And that's why beer burgers or rum cakes or anything where you just pour some booze in and cook off the alcohol are actually really fucking good.

But there are some things that are objective.

Lets take the popular /tg/ game MAGIC The Gathering for example. And for this example we will use some made up names. Now Timmy is of the opinion that playing big green stompy creatures is the most fun way to play magic. Timmy's friend Johny disagrees with Timmy. John is of the opinion the flashy blue spells is most fun way to play magic. Now since fun is subjective they both agree to have fun how they want to have fun. Then you have "that guy" Spike. Spike plays to win plays decks with a good win % as these are objectively more consistent decks than what Timmy or Johny play.

Only so far as Trump isn't doing what he said he wanted to do like the time he responded to Assad's chemical weapons attack or completely doubling back on his incessant claims that the American intelligence community is out to get him and that Russia didn't hack the election to implicitly admitting that the election was hacked but that Russia might not be behind it.

I will admit though that even if attacking Assad's base was just a show of force to prove to the world that Trump wasn't a pushover, it's still one of the better uses of our military might that has happened in a long while. So points to Trump for that.

Which should be obvious to anyone who's actually read his early stuff.
On the important parts of this thread I don't like the taste of alcohol but as my mums cat will drink anything alcoholic I must conclude that it is possible for someone to like the taste of it. On the topic of Objectivism (which I am not well read on) it seems to me that it's in my interest for a government that will protect the interests of the masses and is powerful enough to control and where necessary punish powerful individuals and groups to be in place therefore as I owe nothing to said powerful individuals and groups I should allow whatever level of regulation necessary to further my interests.

The only "hacking" that had any affect on the results of the election was Hillary's emails and that is at least half on her for being her own worst enemy.

Yeah, a bunch of self-righteous Obama appointees actively try to weaken their own government by illegally leaking classified information.

You mean firing Comey, which both political parties disliked immensely at that point, and other officials directly opposed with his views? Not to mention he let the special investigation go relatively unimpeded.
>surprised when he can't keep a lid on the truth
What "truth"? Most of the info being leaked doesn't even have anything to do with Trump. All it does is weaken national security.
