Four episodes seems a little too short. I guess Netflix was just testing the waters to see how this would be received before committing to a full season.
>>
>>93699768
Yeah that whole tavern scene was totally not too long and totally not awkward or cringey

it's the only actual part i had any real problem with other than Mumbles Belmont, and it did set up the joke in episode 4
>>
>>93699768
I think it's a more mature characterization among the characters. And by that I mean the characters are adults, not adolescents. Alot of Japanese stories involve adolescent characters.
>>
>>93699768
Please stop this I was having fun discussing the church stuff and the weeb kept typing in caps don't bring him back.
>>
>>93699905
One more episode would have been nice for Belmont/Alucard filling. More frames during the fights wouldn't have been too bad either.
>>
>>93699890
Isn't "season 2" confirmed?

This was written 10 years ago as an 80 minute movie, first of a trilogy. Wonder how they're going to pace out the rest of CV3.
>>
I'm in the middle of episode 2 right now. I really don't like Trevor's characterization in this. Getting on my nerves.
Had to pause because I'm getting annoyed.
>>
>>93699768
I really enjoyed it. Exceedingly well done. Trevor was adorable and awesome. Sypha was cute and very sexy. And Alucard was everything I was hoping he would be.

I rather loved them showing just how evil the church is. And showing how their desires for power and control and everything is nothing but pure powermongering evil.

>>93699905
Some parts came a little off as forced. Like you said the entire bar scene felt unnecessary. Though I admit I did chuckle a bit when Trever tried to kick Alucard in the balls. Also Sypha's blush at the end for a split second when Alucard simply asked her a question was weird. Did his overflowing bishiness finally get to her?
>>
>>93699986
Someone said 8 eps next season. Anyone got a source on that?

Also, Roman Catholics are relatively many in Transylvania, so it's conceivable this all takes place outside the Orthodox majority of the countryside.
>>
>>93699890
>>93699986

this is only the first half of season 1, they're finishing the second half right now (according to Warren Ellis' last newsletter)

season 2 has already been confirmed

>>
>>93700071
About that, after all the bragging about the Game of Thrones vibe and R-rating, I didn't see any nudity, not even from monster girls straight from the games.

Also no skellingtons and zombies yet when that's the first enemies you fight but I hope that's next season.
>>
>>93700068
Nice. I wonder if Grant is going to be introduced then? If he is I hope they don't do some shitty love triangle side plot since he apparently had a thing for Sypha and was so butthurt when she and Trevor got married that he refused to attend their wedding. Though that information is from Judgment so I don't know if that counts as canon.
>>
>>93700146
That is one thing I found unfortunate. I was hoping for more variety in Dracula's minions swarming out in his army.

When all the shutters in Castlevania opened, I hoped familiar and terrifying horrors would come pouring out.

Like Medusa Heads
>>
>>93700146
Game of Thrones is just what people throw around to get normies and plebs interested in something that might be "violent" and "mature".
>>
>>93700146
Well, it did talk about a guy fucking a goat, and had alot of blood, guts, gore, and death.

That works for me for an R Rating.

Of course, Symphony was the much better game.
>>

There was that one priest who seemed to be a good guy and was able to produce holy water or whatever. The other priests including the bishop were so far gone that even God abandoned them because they were closer to the demons than they were human.

>>93700345
I for once prefer classic castlevania. where the Belmonts where already on the quest to kill dracula. They are brief and to the point.

You don´t need to waste 20 minute to explain Dracula´s motivation. He is Dracula everyone knows he is fucking evil. If you want his Symphony of the Night backstory you can show it after you introduce the main character of your story.
It even gives more narrative weight to your story. first show dracula doing evil shit and then show that he has good reasons to be pissed of with humanity.
>>
>>93700409

Alucard is supposed to be stupidly sexy. He was literally designed by Kojima to be a Bishounen which is the appearance that he uses in this series. That quick blush was still weird though, but I guess it's to remind us of how inhumanly good looking he's supposed to be.
>>
Before I get started, does it help to know anyone about Castlevania first? Because my knowledge of the story extends about as far as "What is a man?" and Wall Chicken.
>>
>>93700382
For a casual sure. Castlevania is better than Metroidvania. The fact castlevania had manly designe and Metroidvania looks like Tumblr gay stuff for girls is just a plus

>>
>>93700639
This is based off of Dracula's Curse or the 3rd Castlevania game. It came out around 1989/90 so the story was pretty bare bones. Honestly you don't need to know about the lore of the series to watch this. You can just jump straight in and watch it with zero problems.

You know what? I don't even disagree and you can see it in modern times but maybe I'm just bored of the archetype. Maybe because the church symbols in Castlevania are some of the few in modern media that aren't corrupt, regardless of the church members themselves.
Dunno, it seems narratively lazy IMO.
>>
I'm concerned about the evil church guys only because the church is objectively holy in the games, but then Shinto is too and they work together, what matters is holy > dark.

But holy being effective against dark felt kind of tacked on after all the other stuff. It needed even just a bit more screen time for non-corrupt clerics. Maybe a priest who privately objects but can't do shit.

Yeah, but that made him become Dracula and align himself with the devil. When we start the series he's objectively very nice even if his garden is full of skellies. "He's misunderstood, you see!"
>>
They made Trevor too much of a Game of Thrones cool-guy but he's growing on me. Sypha is really cute though and I love the nods to the Castlevania lore. I really hope this series takes off because I've always thought the story of the Castlevania games was underrated.

Maybe the Protestants are the good side of the church. I'd like to see Belmont wield his more holy subweapons. If they can fit the stopwatch in there too I'll be a happy boy.
>>
>>93701204
No, he was a vampire then as well. I believe it was later material that established how he was terrorizing Europe because of his wife's being burnt at the stake, as shown here.
>>
>>93699768
I enjoyed it overall, but I really can't understand why they didn't wait to release it until they had more finished. It took them 4 episodes to get anywhere at all plot-wise, and it doesn't seem like something that the average viewer is going to bother coming back to once we finally get more content. People like me who like Castlevania already and/or like animation in general will probably continue watching, but what about normies? The creators said that they wanted this to reach a wide audience.

>we can all agree that western story telling and directing is much better than all that cringy shit from Japan.

I'd say "complete failure" because while I'm aware of the memes I've never played the games; but watch more animated media than live action. And I shut this off less than halfway through the first episode around the time the waifu was being burned to death for MUH SCIENCE by MUH CHURCH ... and not for something understandable like being marred to actual hellspawn. "Don't hurt them, they don't know what they're doing" ( while being burned alive at the sake ) was about as hard as I've cringed in ... ever. Unless you're mainlining nostalgia this is a hardpass.

the evil church stuff continues until late episode 3 or early episode 4, very annoying. Frollo would be more than proud. So it seems like that particular group of priests are the bad guys and not the whole church
There's a good priest that gives the characters holy water and it actually works
>>
>>93701792
It's sort of implied that not all priests are bad, but only near the end. I hope Ellis keeps his anti-Christian autism in check for season two, since in the actual games themselves the Church as a whole is not corrupt.
Granted, the Church was pretty damn corrupt back then, but it's been done to death already as a storytelling device. At least have a proper balance of good priests and bad ones, otherwise it doesn't make any fucking sense for holy weapons to actually work.

That's a rarity and unsurprisingly it isn't doing too well in Japan despite it's amazing production values. Probably because it's western fantasy instead of the usual 15 year old Japanese kid gets transported into a fantasy land usually with game mechanics that are somehow a part of the world and is the underdog but secretly has some OP ability and gets all the bitches.

That really depends on whether you take the manga as canon or not. In the manga she was never burned, and in the games she's never mentioned as being burned at the stake either, just "executed." That could mean she was hung up like Jesus and left to starve, stabbed, etc.

>if they were being really nice they would have tied a bag of gunpowder to her
Fun fact: during the actual inquisition if you offered up a full confession and turned in a few fellow "witches" they'd be "merciful" by strangling you to death BEFORE you were burned and your ashes scattered or dumped into a river.

The burning and scattering were important because they taught a literal resurrection during the Second Coming which required you to have a physical body to be resurrected into.

> pol, the church, ect

The point I think here is that Castlevania generally aligns the the heros with the Church/Christ and the villains with the powers of Darkness, Lords of Evil, Death, and of course, actually fucking Satan. Warren Ellis as a part of the Fedora Brit might not be the best choice here for your writer here if you're looking to tell that sort of story.

If you REALLY wanted to bring in the historic murkeyness of church politics then Mideval Wallachia IS a perfect fucking example, but that's primarily because you have the results of the Catholic Church cutting out the tendons of the formerly ascendant Orthodox Church who is currently busy having it's teeth kicked in by the now ascendant muslim invaders (who's very existance and intollerable culture levies actuall resulted in the historical existance of Dracula in the first place.)

I mean, there's LOADS of shady shit you can get into and even mix in good ol SHAFT (forgive me I cannot hear that name without imagining him having a blaxploitation theme and gospel choir announcing his entrance) without needing to bring in the thematically out of place 'Muh Galileio' conflict. It's just... myopic.

Hell, given the setting it probably makes more sense that she had ACTUAL FUCKING HEALING MAGIC, like any of the other numerous characters.

the animation felt....off. Like every fast movement in the show felt slower than it should have. Doesnt help that the actors work on action scenes suck and the music is awful.
But if they can fix those aspects, season 2 should be amazing.

I want more colab with europe/NA/asian stuff when someone heading it knows how to handle it. US animation has been only concerned with stylistic art for a while. And that isn't bad but stylistic/cartoon wouldn't work for this. Simple cartooning has it's place, thua is great because it finds a different area to fullful the thing it needs.

>Do Americans really care about religion as much as this movie makes out?
No. But it's aimed a the very loud minority that DO.

The same folks that build theme parks to promote the idea that Noah's arc was a real thing that happened historically, for example:
https://arkencounter.com/

Also starting in the 1950's we had a big push of Us Vs Them ( with the Them at the time being the Godless Communists ) which resulted in things like "one nation under god" being added to the Pledge Of Allegiance that all school children are required to recite every day at the start of school:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pledge_of_Allegiance

And the motto on our money changing from "E pluribus unum" ( Latin for "Out of many, one") to:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_God_We_Trust

So ... you get a fuckton of Virtue Signaling where people claim they're christian as a tribal thing "I'm one of you! I'm a good guy!" but haven't been inside a church in years if ever.

For example there's this classic bit where Republican from the Bible Belt thinks the 10 Commandments should be on public display ( ignoring the violation of the constitution that would entail ). When asked to name them he ... falls a bit short.
http://www.cc.com/video-clips/tlf8t3/the-colbert-report-better-know-a-district---georgia-s-8th---lynn-westmoreland

Or this:
http://christiannews.net/2017/05/16/jerry-falwell-jr-who-is-convinced-trump-is-christian-bestows-liberty-university-doctorate-on-president/

TL;DR most Americans would find the movie ( or even just the trailer ) cringe inducing; however the majority are still uncomfortable ADMITTING that they don't really care in as many words because atheist is generally pronounced to rhyme with pedophile by conservatives and lumps you in with the intolerant fedora tippers if you're more progressive.

It is historically ignorant faggots like you who really piss me off. The church as a whole is no less or more evil than any ideology throughout history, and has done as more good than it has bad, science, literature, art, these are all things that have prospered because of people following religious teachings. Individuals may use it from time to time to perform evil acts, but that is on them, not the church as a whole. Fucking read a book before you judge an institution you don't even understand fully.

Sypha is important because she's Trevor's future wife and continues the Belmont bloodline. And Alucard is important for obvious reasons. Grant was never really important.

On a basic level it's doing pretty well.
The original castleVania 3 didn't have much story, so it uses elements from all of the games at the time like lisa being a healer that gets put to death.
Way back when, Ellis was communiacting with Koji Igarashi about making the script solid, and he's probably still using the base of that script here.
Funny thing, iga made him revise the script so many times that he said "it's amazing how dedicated iga is to the games, but I hope I meet him in an alley one day so I can beat him with a pipe"

Not really. That was more in Simon's time and beyond. They wouldn't even help Leon fight monsters because they'd rather focus on heretics and he had to give up his titles to go fight Walter. Don't expect the Church and the Belmonts to have the same relationship across a thousand years.

Nah, his "you'll do" line and then explaining the other part about the prophecy--about how he'd meet a hunter and scholar when he woke up--made it pretty obvious he was just testing them. I didn't get the sense that he was serious about killing Trevor at all.

Even if that were true, and the existence of an international coverup that enabled kiddie fiddlers to spend entire careers kiddie fiddling from parish to parish is just the most recent example of how UNTRUE it is; the fact that said Church claims a monopoly on Truth with everyone else being at best misguided and at worst literally in league with The Devil means that they'd need to do a little bit better than "not any worse than anyone else," yes?

You do realize that the only people who think like you are weebs in North America and the UK. Its anime. Anime has different substyles involved but it has nothing to do with where it was made. Im Japanese, born and raised for half my life, I also am a graphic designer. Guess what happens when someone wants something to have an anime style? I do fly home and work on it for them, nor does anyone on our team. They do not come in and say, 'I want a certain style, but you guys cannot do it in the US. Do you have a studio is Tokyo?'

This weeb mentality you have is something everyone back home laughs about. Go read your tokyopop debu. If you did not know the studio youd never know where this was made.

There are tons of Americans (and I mean a lot) who do believe in Christianity. There are a lot who practice it hard, and there are a lot who don't really care. I just realized that they could have taken more mileage of the story if they used Rondo of Blood instead of castlevania 3.

Need the evil priest, you have Shaft and he is also a necromancer so the fightscene could have used zombies and skelletons instead of ramdom people.
need to tie it to dracula´s wife and Alucard, rondo is the prequel to Symphony of the night.

Pretty much. They never target other religions because in the states they know nothing about them; they were raised in Christianity, discovered atheism but don't get much further than that and because they were sheltered feel as if they've stumbled upon some novel, never before explored revelation and that everyone else needs to be woke. All teenagers think their experiences are unique.

>>93701862
I think Hunchback of Notre Dame or Witcher 3 did a good job at tackling this without turning people off. There was an immediate sympathetic Christian figure in the form of a priest chastising Frollo in Hunchback and in Witcher the first Witch Hunter you come across in the Baron quest is one of the most reasonable people you've met up until that point, and then later on you come across the fanatical witch burners. You'll see that Castlevania isn't fedora if you watch until the last episode, but that's only if you get to that point.

Or: don't murder the first born child of every single family in the country who didn't ( and in most cases didn't even know to ) paint their doors with lambs blood.

Or: don't ask someone to murder their only child, even if you call it off at the last second after making sure that they'd actually do it. That shit's wack, yo.

Trevor was in his teens when he fought Dracula but westerner L's hate any main character that isn't older and scraggly out of some misguided association with machismo. No, it was about increasing status of nobility and trade, leading to formal institutions such as monasteries accidentally leading way to trading knowledge.
Almost one and a half century later, Nobility is suddenly strong and centralized enough to push out the Vatican from many parts of the European power structure, as a reaction to Martin Luther doing shit at just the right time.

It was also about guns, settling dark forests, more trade than ever. But without industrial production, you can't really do mass production, so you can't have commoners engage in economy transactions, so as a side effect: Commoners can't engage in SCIENCE either.
You also have period stuff, like serfs still being considered "family" to the landlords, that is forgotten in all modern re imaginations of the period.

You are right, but its always nice to see good old "this is supernatural you dolt" poke

Yeah that's why I mentioned that realistically this is probably how things would play out.
As soon as soon as someone in the church started playing with the idea of the Belmonts were also black magic users, they would want to get rid of them. Either because they would think is the right thing or because they would fear them being too powerfull.
Would be even funnier if this followed the pre-retcon storyline where the Belmonts had some vamp dna in them.

No: the majority of Americans are mildly superstitious (ie think there's some sort of afterlife ) but don't actually attend church services and couldn't name the 10 commandments if their lives depended on it; because they don't actually give two shits and don't actually believe that a preacher/priest/church has any sort of moral authority.

They take the second coming about as seriously as alien abductions or ghost hunting on average. Less so if you go by ticket sales or Nielsen ratings.

You're confusing ( or intentionally conflating ) "current scientific knowledge" which is in a constant state of flux as things are tested and improved for accuracy ( typically in tiny tiny increments, but occasionally with a revolutionary discovery ) with "the scientific method" which IS the be all, end all as far as these things go because one is based on asking questions and testing answers and all the others are based on "it's true and you CAN'T question that because of who said it or where it was written down" which means that only one of them is self correcting.

I'm pretty sure it'll be staying right in the ruins of the city destroyed at the start given that they bothered to have Dracula move it there.

Also Wallachia's nowhere near the sea so it'd feel dumb to have Dracula move the castle that far from the country he's attacking and to have the characters do that much travelling when the story's so focused on their saving Wallachia.

What is surprising is that the show has a mixture of "magic is basically science, witches were all Curie-tier scientists, they did nothing wrong'", and warding and blessings and all of that stuff. Normally these stories go all the way with the former, and say that the local church is completely ineffectual on top of being super corrupt.

Man, I want to like this so much, but I'm just not feeling it. It's not bad, but to me it still feels pretty mediocre. The designs are good, but the animation mostly feels stiff, and choppy from a lack of frames. That's especially noticeable when you look at capes and material during action scenes. The Trevor vs Alucard fight had some strong keyframes, but not much between them. The backgrounds were very good, though. I didn't care for the writing either. I didn't sympathize with any of the characters or feel compelled to see where the story goes. For a four episode season that mostly acts as a prologue, that's a problem. If I didn't have an affection for the Castlevania games, I don't know if I'd be interested enough to come back for season 2. They should have had the 4 episodes be Trevor fighting his way through haunted forests and shit to get to Dracula's castle with backstory revealed through flashback snippits along the way.

While this is personal taste and I can't really fault the show for it not being what I wanted it to be, I really didn't like the show's tone. When I heard they were basing it on Castlevania 3, I was hoping it would have felt more like a Hammer horror film with action elements. The GoT feel to it just kind of comes off as bland.

To be fair, laypersons confuse them by accident, and people who argue in bad faith conflate them to win arguments on the internet all the time. Treating them as one, unified thing is the default position.

I agree on the story telling, but I'm not too sure about the directing.

One thing I noticed from many years ago is that the most popular anime on /co/ are the most western ones. I think the dubs also push the more "west" feeling to it.

I feel similarly, but I tempered my expectations way back when the news broke. Personally, I feel like the worst thing it could have been was just GoT with a fresh coat of paint. I'm OK with what it is. Your post reminds me, however, that this is another instance where the story just jumps straight to the castle. I wish the show could have bucked that trend. They played up the fact that the castle travels, but it's not like they're gonna be tracking it down from place to place (I think? I don't know if they confirmed the whole show's going to be near the castle or not).

Two episodes in and I'm fucking pissed.

I was super excited about this from the trailer. They really nailed the art and design, it truly looks like how a Castlevania should.

But the writing, and everything about the writing, is absolutely terrible. It's not immediately noticeable, but signs of the rot appear early in the form of awkward phrasing. Alucard's "I won't let you commit genocide" and all that shit Lisa was saying on the stake jump to mind. Then there was all the repetitive dialogue about the one year before Dracula's attack, just to name another example. This beginning is supposed to be tragic and emotion-laden, but it loses all of its impact when it's gone through that Asperger's filter.

What they did to Belmont is fucking bullshit too. They introduce him through an unfunny, autistic rendition of Snatch/Lock Stock, but the kicker here is, it's the only time where the guy is likable. This guy is just so cool and edgy as he walks through an absolute horror, tipping his fedora at all the gore and sadness. He's a zero-fucks-given kind of dude, spitting on a huge mound of dead bodies because fuck 'em.

Honestly, the drunken, wandering anti-hero was played out twenty years ago; now it's just retarded. The Belmont clan are supposed to be holy and righteous warriors, but so far, this guy is just as bad as Dracula. What's funny is that they both have the same outlook and motivation: fuck the whole human race because they didn't stand up against other evil people. And no, Ellis is not going for the "hero and villain are two sides of the same coin" trope, this is probably how he himself views the world. It's very much an irrational perspective, so how can the audience relate to such stupidity?

In the games, the Belmont clan was living in
exile and shit during that time period. It isn't until Trevor becomes a legend that people start viewing them as holy and righteous.

Overall, the series (so far) seems to actually take a lot of stuff from the game being adapted, even the fights.

Also, just from a storytelling perspective. In my opinion, if Trevor Belmont showed up as a holy righteous badass and fought his way through the castle that way then he would have no actual character development. That would be worse, and weird considering that his clan is hated (this is canon) by the people.

But I think they will do it and it will end with them getting married. They've taken some liberties, but they are trying to stick close to the source material. I doubt they will come up with an original ending.

wait...I thought 4 more episodes for THIS season were coming this year? What is going on?

Back in the olden days monks and clergy were the biggest contributors to scientific development, often because they had free time and science was considered a hobby instead of a profession. If it wasn't for religion creating a class of layabouts we'd be centuries behind where we are now.

lol we should praise wealth inequality, it obviously was a good thing back then so it must be a good thing now

It seems everyone wasn't paying attention to that part, it literally resolves the entire MUH CHURCH argument.

Inorite

In the Castlevania universe the church is depicted as corrupt but the religion and artifacts are real and have real power.

If someone wants to take it as a serious critique then it's not really anti-christian or anti-religion. It's anti-corruption-of-religion-for-the-sake-of-power-and-control.

because EVERY FUCKING DAY some /a/utist comes here and tells how much anime is better, and it makes me want to throw all anime and its cancerous fanbase into a lake of boiling water.

only if you think class diversification is something to be strived for and something better than a pharoh is what we need, Even the Pharoh's or Ceasars didn't have more wealth in comparison to SLAVE at their time (yes they had possessions).

Fucking Amerifats just hate everyone, the rich, the poor, the middle class. Anyone

People just like to overreact. They make it pretty clear by the last episode that it was mostly just the bishop that was bad.

Is that why a great chunk of western garbage had to rip-off Berserk or even the majority of JRPGs? kek

How new are you?

No, Netflix never adds episodes to a season, they almost always post the entire season rather than putting up part of a season and adding more later. The confusion comes from Ellis calling the next eight episodes the second half of this season while Netflix is calling them season 2.

>I came up with green text that references something most people take for granted...

Yeah...fuck, I just came off a podcast that was talking about these kind of fake cognition quandaries. I guess time for me to sleep and not get into a quagmire before I can take a logical step back

Well, Berserk is basically Guin Saga with less furries and more fucking...fucking demons too.

What's there to argue? Your shit taste is quite apparent, as is the fact you can't into morality for shit.

Also Simon gets healed at churches in Simon's Quest.

>The only reason why he is the way he is is because Ellis is immature and thinks these kinds of characters are cool.

Compared to the moralistic fuckheads that pass for protagonists nowadays, they're very cool by comparison.

This thread was much better than the last one.
