What went wrong?
>>
>>93698517
Nothing, as of most /co/ media. If you want to nitpick then

>Pirate fight went on too long
>Maui comes back just cuz
>Very end is really quick
>>
>>93698517
Nothing? It was a pretty solid movie
>>
The villain song was kinda meh.
Aside from that, it was okay.
>>
>>93698517
Moans
>>
>>93698517
Not enough of the adorable piglet.
>>
I don't know
I thought it was pretty good, I liked the songs
But I rarely watch children movies so my opinion is not really biased
>>
Perhaps Maui should have assumed the form of a cute adorable mascot character. I mean, if you do have a shapechanging demigod as a secondary protagonist, why not make use of it to have him as s cute snuggly-wiggly creature, then become a badass muscular fighting machine helping her out against coconut cannibal corsairs and monstros megapods?
>>
>>93698517
It was a nice movie. Doesn't linger too long anywhere it goes, and has a nice variety of funny island songs.

I don't get this, I love shiny but it seems like a random decision.

Something feels important about the gods and natural forces not speaking in this movie.
>>
>>93698517
The moral narrative was Maui's, but the moral resolution was completed by Moana.

It was like if someone decided to have Jasmine as the focus character of the Aladdin movie, and didn't change anything about the story except we don't meet Aladdin until she sneaks out, and at the end Jasmine is the one that frees the genie. It would feel a bit off.
>>
>>93698517
Not much. The twist is quite stupid and pointless, though.
>>
>>93698517
It was good but it felt... Like scenes were planned to happen and then threaded together into a narrative after

It felt like "Things Happened: The movie"

In other movies, scenes felt like they happened due to what happened in prior scenes. Here, the connections seemed really loose.

It was good, but didn't have a strong narrative
>>
>>93699543
At least it was better than the "Really nice character is actually evil" cliche in every other modern Disney movie
>>
>>93698517
good movie overall, my only nit picks are the ocean deus ex machina and how underutilized the spirit world was.
>>
>>93699604
I thought the one in Frozen was done alright
>>
I was expecting more monsters besides the one crab when they went down that hole. Moana herself was also not that interesting a protagonist.

Other than that, I liked it. Beautiful water effects.
>>
>>93698517
It was lacking in an actual villain.
The crab got the villain song, but he was just a couple minute obstacle, not even an actual main villain.
>>
>>93699481
There could have been a song when Moana's grandmother laid out the heart of tahini situation, instrumentally reprised during the big fight.
>>
Tamatoa should have been a rival demigod and leader of the coconuts.

I was waiting the whole movie for them to play the Tiki Room song.
>>
Moana doesn't undergo a lick of character development

>Beginning: "I'm a strong independent woman who thinks I'm right about everything!"
>End: "I'm a strong independent woman who was right about everything!"
>>
>>93698517
It's great, compared to Frozen it's a masterpiece
>>
>>93699592
This is the biggest problem with the movie overall.

The coconut pirates were there for one scene and were never mentioned again. We don't know who they are, where they came from or why they attacked Moana and Maui.

Shiny Crab was there for one scene and was never mentioned again. (Excluding post credits gag) It's obvious that he had some kind of history with Maui but we have no idea what that is other than he got Maui's hook somehow. That is literally all we know about this character.

Maui has a backstory about being a human that was abandoned by his parents but that has absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the plot and wouldn't change anything if it were never brought up.

Maui also has trouble using the hook when he first gets it back but immediately has a montage in the next scene and is used to it again.

And then there's a scene where Maui leaves but then returns during the climax for seemingly no reason. I'm guessing they did this so Moana could be alone while talking to the ghost of her grandmother but surely they could find some other means of separating her from Maui for a few minutes.

What do you mean what went wrong? Fans AND critics LOVE the movie. It's litty.
>>

That's not an achievement.

>>93698517

It was painfully generic.Nothing felt important l,woth songs by current flavour of the moment because he worked on a movie 'bout muh racism.

Underwhelming end to the Disney Revival era.

Beginning
>Doesn't want to lead her people
>Ventures out to find the heart to fulfill her own goals, which isn't the reason why The Ocean chose her

>>
>>93702478
I haven't seen it in years, but Cats Don't Dance is great, probably much better than Zootopia, which focused on the wrong lead and kind of fizzled out towards the end with the conclusion to its mystery and it's mixed moral metaphors. And it fell into the usual Disney trap of being an comedy with few good jokes.

And this is just a nitpick, but I felt like the desert and tundra districts were unnecessary and made the setting feel very unlike a city. The urban area and rainforest were interesting enough and could have been explored more.
>>
>>93702771

zootopia is multicultural kettle, that's why there's so much locations crammed into this movie, the lead was fine, fox was depressing to watch for longer.
>>
>>93702478
Cats Don't Dance had a way better villain than Zootopia, and now that I think about it they were somewhat similar

It had a couple of problems, but by far the biggest problem was the plot itself. Literally any conflict in before or during the movie's events is caused by characters refusing to tell or ask things IRL people would have asked since the beginning.

>Why can't Anna be reminded of Elsa's magic powers?
>Why did their parents encourage Elsa to become a shut in and never made the effort of helping her control her powers?
>Why did Anna never ask their parents why she couldn't play with Elsa?
>Etc.

The producers abstained from making Elsa a full-blown villain but in my honest opinion this resulted in her being even more dislikable as a result. It's very hard to like a character who was bragging about being free from any and all responsibilities and then seeing her being so submissive when confronted by her sister. Not to mention shooting Anna in the heart and then kicking her out into the wilderness was a dick move.

The whole plot twist with Hans came out of left field. There was no foreshadowing, which a proper plot twist should have. There were no warning signs with Hans, he was never shady until the plot twist came up.
>>
>>93705587
>It's very hard to like a character who was bragging about being free from any and all responsibilities

this is what, deep down, every woman wants:
strong, independent, irresponsible and unpunished.
that's why this movie sold so well, despite being, well, garbage.

>The coconut pirates were there for one scene and were never mentioned again. We don't know who they are, where they came from or why they attacked Moana and Maui.
They were there for the heart of Te'fiti. Pretty convenient they were close to Maui's island and not anywhere else in the entire ocean at that exact time, though.

Their existence also goes against the whole "Moana's people used to be voyagers and faced no dangers other than sea monsters and storms that showed up after Te'Fiti lost her heart", since one would expect they would attack the shit out of any boat they see.

>Shiny Crab was there for one scene and was never mentioned again. (Excluding post credits gag) It's obvious that he had some kind of history with Maui but we have no idea what that is other than he got Maui's hook somehow. That is literally all we know about this character.
They fought once, and Maui cut one of his legs. Just that.

It's kinda weird you say that about the leads, because they used a near identical formula in CCD. The lead oppomistic country kid with big dreams coming to the city and discovering reality but managing to salvage optimism (Danny/Judy) paired alongside the pessimist who has been there/done that with the idea of optimistic dreaming (Sawyer/Nick). So I'm curious about your position on Danny as the protagonist since its essentially the exact same format.
>>
Moana herself is boring. She's not "perfect" but her flaws and struggles are less extreme than even fucking Ariel. She wants a "thing" (ocean) that goes against her culture but unlike other princesses she's actually sown to mesh very well with her society (all we know about Belle is everyone thinks she's weird and she pretty much thinks the townies are bumfucks etc). During her backstory we're shown a few instances of wanting her "thing" (ocean) but likewise she's MOSTLY at piece with her place in her village (MOSTLY) and the mantle of leadership. You'd think that would make her a more well rounded character since she's less of a generic outcast but it doesn't work here, at least imo, because her demands are more than reasonable, everyone minus her dad (who gets justification too) isn't opposed to it, and it's revealed her people were already like this to begin with so none of her feelings are new or strange. Her character arc is "I want ocean" to "I'm on ocean and Maui little over my head here though" to "I can't do it" to "Wait yeah I can" and it's shit.

She's completely bullheaded in her goal but is 100% justified in every action she takes. She doesn't have to make any comprises on her dreams or find the power within herself beyond the VERY END where she's wavering a bit and that's more to do with the fact things didn't work out as opposed to herself not feeling worthy.

So girl who wants a very simple thing goes with guy whose entire character is "I'm over compensating" and they fight TWO THINGS and then get sad and beat the monster movie over.
>>
Too safe
>>
The characters aren't merchandise friendly.

Sure you can make a pretty princess Moana doll, but she doesn't have any outfit changes. The retarded chicken is gross, kids don't want a plushie of that. Maui doesn't sell well as a doll for girls or an action figure for boys.

Merchandise is the lifeblood of Disney and the reason Frozen has so much staying power. If there's a sequel the cute pig needs a bigger role.
>>
>>93707586
I haven't watched the movie recently, but I never picked up foreshadowing with Hans up until the twist at the end.

If I missed something please tell me, throughout the whole movie he didn't seem to do or say anything suspicious.
>>
>>93698517

It was boring and focused mostly on two characters stuck in the ocean with barely anything it it. Moana barely had a personality and Maui was mostly unlikable.
