Trying to think of ways for a burgeoning Empire to maintain order and control over a very large amount of territory acquired in a very short amount of time.

So far I have the following.

>No taxes
>Instant citizenship
>Military occupation
>Incredibly harsh punishments for rebelling
>Taking the children of important officials from the conquered territory and holding them as hostages.

Any other ideas?

>Taking the children of important officials from the conquered territory and holding them as hostages.

Make that even better, go full Janissaries with them.

>They began as an elite corps of slaves made up of kidnapped young Christian boys who were forced to convert to Islam, and became famed for internal cohesion cemented by strict discipline and order. Unlike typical slaves, they were paid regular salaries. Forbidden to marry or engage in trade, their complete loyalty to the Sultan was expected.
>>

what?
>>
>>93664490
>go full Janissaries with them.
I'd love to do that but the story only takes place over 4 years. Not enough time to fully raise and integrate children into an elite class.

Also, the Janissaries were a mistake

>>93664196
It helps if the conquered territory happens to be backwards and/or extremely peaceful. That's how it has tended to work in real life, the few times it has worked
i like the idea of not taxing them though so basically they have no reason to give any fucks about being conquered. but then the question becomes WHY conquer them
>>
>>93664525
You could play with it by making them just starting the process, which would also make a bigger impact than just having them hostages. People would be more fearful, as nobody wants their children to be taken away to be brainwashed and turned into slave soldiers later. That and early-stages of that are not as common in fiction, you see the end product instead.

Sorry if I'm getting too ahead with this, I'm a bit of a sadistic storyteller.

So my webcomic-to-be is shaping up nicely, but I'm at a loss as to hosting.

I don't want it to be like other webcomics where you read a page, click, read a page, click, etc. The panels on my pages are pretty large and graphical, so clicking is going to be tedious and immersion-breaking. What I'd like is to have the pages for each "scene" (like a movie scene, I guess) laid out centered on the page all in one big column, and you just scroll to the bottom, where you click the link to the next scene.

It's been awhile since I've dabbled in any sort of webhosting or sitebuilding myself. Is WordPress or Tumblr something I should look at (with templates that can help me achieve what I've described above), or am I better off building it from scratch in basic HTML? It seems doable but if there's a better way, I'd like to do it.
>>
>>93664726
Well you're in luck, that's the way most hosts are going now. It's fucking stupid EXCEPT for comics like yours, that are meant to be read in one long vertical scroll
That said, Tapastic still sucks because it forces your comic off to one side while the other side has a uselessly glitchy navigation column, and the right has useless and also glitchy overlays..
You might as well go with Webtoons, where the only problem is how ugly and uneditable the site colors are.. but everything else is just fine for what you want
>>
>>93664726
Maybe I'm reading your example wrong but to me it sounds like infinite canvas/webtoon format? If so, WebToons and Tapastic are pretty much hosting sites designed especially for those kind of formats, even if their layouts are not really the best.

As of Wordpress, I think the ComicPress theme can be adapted to it I think, is just a matter of playing with the code. Can't really talk about Tumblr's theme but I know Tumblr is a bitch when it comes to a huge pic in one post.

I use Wordpress with ComicPress on my site, and you can do multi-page posts easily enough, reading in a column. You won't really be able to have a double-page spread, but then not many websites do that anyway (so this is an advantage a purely print publication has).

I've never had any problems with Tapas, but I read it on desktop, not mobile. The pages aren't so much "forced off to one side" as just off centre; the left side has a narrow info/navigation coulmn, and the strips are centred in the rest of the space.
Tapas is better with "smaller" pages, such as you'd see in an 8"x6" GN or A5 'zine. It's less suited to an e.g. A4 sized bande dessinee album page.

I'd suggest looking at WordPress/ComicPress on your own site, as the most convenient in terms of customisability. Tapas and other hosting sites are the easiest to use, but you're stuck with their branding. Hand coding HTML would be the most tedious and time consuming option.
>>
>>93664568
>But then the question becomes WHY conquer them

Because they can of course!
Well some examples from life sometimes when is just not for resources (or a hidden macguffin) is because the territory has access to trading roads or other strategic location.

Yeah, I'm definitely trying to balance the two. I actually kind of came up with the main points of the story before I really thought too much about the setting. I want the characters to feed into the setting and vice versa as I build it up.

What do you think about this creature design? Is it spooky?

It's a sentient man-sized maggot, it wears black armor and carries a sword and generally has the appearance of a knight. The fanged mouth is usually hidden behind a kind of muzzle plate. When the armor is destroyed or the creature injured it can 'eject' and quickly burry underground. For the color scheme I want the black of the armor to clash with the albino white skin of the maggot.
I really like this character but I'm worried the design might be a bit too sinister for the kind of comic I want to do...
>>
>>93669756
They can't all be winners, but lately I find that I'm in a place where I only have to spend about 10-20% longer on a bad comic before I think of a cheeky fix that makes it at least okay
>>
>>93669756
Not with comics per se but there have been some requests I have done for a friends that are not really something that make me proud because I feel like I could have done better or I just don't like how it turned out, and yet seems those are the ones the people love the most for some reason.

It may not always be the case, but with comics it can be different because even if you have a weak start, you can learn asap and make the next strips/pages better until you get the pacing and overall cosnistence that makes you proud.
>>
>>93669947
it's a little spooky but the beady little eyes are kind of cute.

I already asked in the last thread but didn't really get a helpful answer.

I have this silly webcomic: https://foxandcatadventures.tumblr.com/
It makes me no money since the two main characters are obviously not made by me so the comic is one of my lowest priorities (I get money from making music, writing and painting). I can barely scrape the time together to get three panels out per week since that is what I promised everyone.
How can I speed up the pace of my story while still releasing the same amount of panels? Are there general tricks for that? Is there literature on storytelling in comics? Apart from Shaun Tan, Junji Ito and Shintaro Kago I have no real experience with comics/manga.
>>
>>93670000
I find beady little eyes extremely spooky. They just seem so soulless and devoid of any sympathy - like some people probably feel about cat eyes.
I'm also one of the few people who loved the eyes on shin godzilla, I think it was extremely creepy but it's mostly considered silly and distracting.
>>
>>93670224
>the two main characters are obviously not made by me
say what?
3 panels is not enough time to get story across any faster, unless you're having panels where nothing is happening
>>
oh shit. saw this thread literally a second after I made an entire topic so I'll just repost this here.

>I'm confident amateur writer who grew up on Marvel and DC and cartoons
>Friend has a lot of experience drawing and grew up on anime and manga
>Both of us decided to try and write a comic

This is just a casual project we're treating as a hobby but the more I work on it, the more questions pop up.

>What are the pros and cons of Japanese manga vs. Western comics?
>When/if we finish this, what should we do with it since we're interested in posting it online?

Summary of the plot coming in the next post
>>
>>93670259

My friend and I are both big fans of real life martial arts, battle shonen, and great action movies so we decided to use this comic as a way to celebrate all these things.

In the universe everyone has an energy/aura/chi that can be trained to make the body stronger/faster/more durable than normal. The goal is to find a power level that resembles feats that are feasible(if not slightly exaggerated) to do in real life, rather than super powers. Like...punching/tackling someone through a wall, getting hit by a car and walking it off, and punching a dent in a metal pole without breaking your hand.

>The premise
An ancient chinese group of villains steal people's souls to make themselves stronger. An order of monks have always fought them. 50ish years ago a monk follows a group of soul stealers to America. He meets a hotheaded boxer and beats him in a fight. After teaching the boxer about the power of energy/aura/chi they create an organization that trains fighters/athletes that also hunt the soul stealers. The story follows 4 main highschool boys

>A guy based off of a classic American bad-boy/jock/bully. The adamant hot-head that trains honestly, fights to prove he's strong, and favors aggressive striking martial arts like Muay Thai.

>A short, chubby nerd that trains to practice discipline, inner peace and self confidence. Favors more meditation/counter oriented fighting styles like Tai Chi and Judo. He's also the person that explains and points out what's happening to the audience.

>A tall, skinny weirdo that doesn't speak much. Trains because because he thinks it's just so god damn fun seeing what he can do. Favors flashy or "fake" fighting styles like Capoeira, and WWE moves.

>A guy that's a walking amalgamation of anime tropes. Too cool to train, has "amazing natural talent" thinks he's the best but also believes in the power of friendship. His increase in skill comes from power boosts.

Welcome to the world of webcomics!
>paneling
Dunno about any youtube channels/podcasts on webcomic making actually. I found the best way to get better at paneling is just by testing it out. Paneling involves eye movement and emphasis. Some dude named Yarbus did an experiment on eye tracking, so I tried to make a comic based on what he asked people to do. Sorry for the shit quality.
As an example - your character is daydreaming/zoning out, their friend comes up them
>establish that your friend is unfocused
one of the most telling factors that someone is zoning out is their blank stare, emphasize the eyes.
>introduce the friend
are they gonna try to scare the MC? a panel of the friend jumping on the MC, make it fairly large since there's a lot of action going on.
are they tired of MC's shit and just wanna get his attention? word bubble with their name, large font, panel of the friend's face with a somewhat irritated look.
>why did MC need to pay attention?
friend explains that they're starting the event soon, whatever it may be.
>MC is somewhat embarrassed for being caught off guard
no face shots, MC is looking away from their friend, probably a panel of their shoes indicating that MC can't look their friend in the eye
>>
i have a new webcomic that i just made and its on deviantart https://nastymcoutplays.deviantart.com/
>>
>>93670259
>pros/cons of manga
There are a lot more resources, like tutorials, and a huge variety of manga to expose concepts for your story. Cons - over-saturation, you will need a unique quirk (story, art, medium) to really separate yourself from the others. You might be tempted to fall into anime tropes.

>pros/cons of western comics
You can get by with simplistic styling more easily, I'd say western comics are more experimental and therefore allow more room for creativity. Webcomics are really quite niche though, it'll take a while for you to build a following.

>posting it online
The author's goodiebag in the second post has a really good guide about it. You can pay to host your own website, put advertisements on it, and make some money. It's more advantageous to backlog pages and then update them weekly. This will cause most people to continuously check back for updates. But start on a regular comic hosting site, and then slowly ween people off to your website.

Panel 2 and 3 look weird in combination. In 2 the right eye is uncovered but in 3 it looks as it from the POV the left eye is seeing it.
>>
>>93671552
Ok, I was worried about that. Did this when the finger over his nose was closer to his eye than the other finger.

I'll throw in more black in the right finger then less in the left finger in panel 3.
>>
>>93671552
>it looks as it from the POV the left eye is seeing it.
in what way? This is something I should learn so I don't do the same, but I don't see the error
>>
>>93671646
Imagine being the person in panel 3 and this is your whole field of vision. The right half of your vision is blocked by a finger. Yet in panel 2 it shows that it is the left eye that is blocked by a finger.
>>
>>93669280
Are there any fonts similar to Anime Ace that are free to use commercially?
>>
>>93671646
>>93671671

Basically I need to put more shadow in the right finger and less in the left to give a better fell of him looking out his right eye. I could make it to where the hand is making his head turn to his left and so the eye looking a little more to his right at the monster, I think, in order for the last panel to work.

I'm still gathering courage to start a Patreon and struggling to figure out what kind of incentives I can give patrons, but what about goals?

I didn't think about it until recently but I should probably have nice, reasonable goals set to make people feel like they're giving money for good reason beyond any Patron incentives, right?

What kind of milestones should I have?
A lot? Just a few?
I mean my REAL goal is to be completely sustained by my comic, which I think will be nice and easy at like 2K a month or so, or is that gonna look too "greedy" as a goal?

>How's your webcomic?
Bad.
Well, not technically a webcomic, but I plan on getting it scanned someday.
I tried to show some hand-inked pages (I don't have an scanner nor a wacom) to my classroom (partially to skip an assignment) just to get shit because the story is about a man who is in a quest (along with a group of people) for his disappeared father after he escaped from his abusive mother.

Apparently, a man looking for another man is a waste of time because men are expendable and unimportant.
Also, presenting women as abusive towards men is unrealistic and misogynistic for some reason that's beyond me.

Fuck college.

You pretty much went to the most extremist side of tumblr to show them your stuff. It's not the most objective critic and probably isn't the audience you want for your webcomic neither.

I for one think there needs to be some equality in this. I'm tired of having the mothers as the victims all the time and the fathers being all abusive, so your story sounds worth a reading.

Pretty much all of the methods you listed would result in a revolt that a burgeoning Empire couldn't afford to deal with.

Take a page out of the Roman playbook: vassal them. Allow them to bend the knee and pay regular tithes to the Empire in exchange for a garrison that "protects" them and "helps maintain order". In exchange, the local rulers get to maintain relative autonomy and the populace keep their way of life, while the Empire gets a new tax-paying territory with minimal investment.

And instead of mass-abducting the children of officials, just take a few of-age daughters/sons of the higher ranking officials. Then marry them off to a few sons/daughters of your Empire's officials to cement loyalty.

Conquest 101.

Most of the time I can not even make a story if I don't have a visual layout for the locations it takes place in. Even if no one else is ever going to know how your world is supposed to look it makes a good reference for you to help move the story along. I love making maps and world building too, so having that aspect really helps me out.

that sounds like an unnecessary amount of work. I would advocate simply 'sketching' space for the text, with nice parallel lines to keep the letter heights consistent and such. if you need to practice the dialogue first (and you probably do. I do) do it in a separate notepad document

My plan right now is to include it as page before the first page of the comic so to speak. I wanna make it look really nice so it provides a sense of place for this whole thing, and so that the reader can go back and look for the names of cities and nations visited or mentioned. I always loved doing that in fantasy novels that had a map after the title page, so I think it would translate to a fantasy comic pretty well.

I'm currently working on character designs for some webcomic ideas, But I want to try something else besides my manga anime style I learned from various how to draw books. I tried drawing some other art styles I liked such as copying how they designed characters in old school cartoon shows, but I keep going back to the manga anime stuff, guess its because I'm used to it. How do other people get beter at drawing differantly than they usually draw? Or learn how to draw like artists they admire? Is it good to try and copy there characters designs to learn how to draw like them?

It's kind of a long path along with the "finding my own style" and "trying more than just manga/cartoon/realistic style" ones. You can draw from life to see some aspects that you can translate to either style (like some anon a few threads ago taught me about cheekbones) and along with that you study artstyles form artists you like, see what aspects you like from them and then either use them with your own or adapt them. With time, practice and a lot of selective elements you will find yourself getting a style you are more comfortable with and avoid being too generic like many manga-style artists out there.

If you want to avoid same face syndrome between manga artists I could point to Hiromu Arakawa (FullMetal Alchemist) and Naoki Urasawa (Pluto, 20th Century Boys). They both have a lot of unique faces and shapes for their characters whitout making them look like they belong to different styles. There are some others that avoid same-face but those two are the best examples I can think of.
>>
>>93680914
>>93680987

Both of these sound like good advice to follow, thanks for helping me out, I'll check these mangas out sometime.

Drawing from life is still pretty hard for me. I usually find its easier to copy 2d images. But I'll definatly practice more techniques and art styles to improve my skills.

I once had to do a short comic for a class and it was set on a fantasy world with some sort of "chosen families" with superpowers, one family for each country at the time because they were set to protect the peace and what not. So I made both a map and a family tree for each, since a lot of the chosen ones for the rpg-like party were not royalty but mostly just average people. They are lost now but I still remember them fondly.

It's a side project for now but I'm glad you like the concept.

I think Magical Girls is a genre with lots of potential - there's the inevitable Madoka comparisons every time something new gets out but I like to think there's plenty of room for new direcitons through comics like mahou shoujo of the end for example. I also like to think that in a parallel universe the author of Sailor Moon went down a darker path and predated Madoka (it's mentioned in an interview) or even started a collaboration with Yoshihiro Togashi when they married.

I'm pretty excited about the concept (working on script and layouts now) but I doubt it will come to fruition any time soon. I recently teamed up with an artist (thank the heavens) and we're working on a fantasy comic but she has to deal with lots of college and work atm so the project is advancing at a snail's pace - but I've tasted blood and I can't bring myself to continue anything with my crappy doodles when there's the chance for a competent artist working on it in the future. I might have to ease her in on the more brutal aspects of this comic idea, though.

I was thinking of something like this. Basically there's a witch/wizard academy stuck in a disputed territory between two nations that just got out of a massive war. Part of the peace treaty was that every 5 years governing of the region is passed off to the other nation and the story begins after the 5th year when the transition is happening to the other, defacto evil, nation.

I wish I had a fraction of your skill, fellow magical girl enthusiast.

As for critique: you probably heard this before but although your colors look really nice, I think this comic would work just fine, if not better in black and white. It has a strong manga aesthetic but unlike 90% of manga-influenced webcomics it feels really genuine. I realize you have now committed to colors but if you ever do a side project or spin off or something, really consider going with black and white all the way.
Other than that thre are a few minor grammar issues:
>was last bit of your humanity
needs an "a" or "the"
>had more magic in her
sounds awkward, try possessed more magic or had greater magical potential or something like that
>(...) been faithfully executing your well
This should probably say: (...) been executing your will faithfully.

I've always read comics and watched animations online. And I recently started drawing again so I sketched this up real quick the main idea I got was the story of a lonely fisherman girl, living in a small town filled with sea-based mysteries. Another idea I got was a stranded cosmonaut, chillin' in space waiting for someone to get him. If anyone here has ever dabbled in webcomics, would you be kind to share some tips or wisdom to a novice artist?
>>
>>93685180
Well, you're allready on par with most hyw regulars, at least considering your art.
Your style is very fitting for a msystery or fantasy setting so I'd say, go with the fishergirl story.
If you want to expand the story or have a more complex plot it can be difficult to work with a strip or a simple panel grid. You need to adjust the format to your mode of storytelling. But for now I'd really like to see where this story goes.

Also, more generally speaking, I'd always tell any creators new to comics to study paneling and page composition thourughly since it's an incredibly important aspect of comics and an overwhelming amount of webcomic artists are very lacking in this regard.

Thanks for the comments, I need to bump this so i can refer back in time.

I am not really committed to coloring, the line art of the first chapter is pretty much done in 2016, but to coloring has been kind of a hurdle. I really want to release this in a reasonable time frame, but I hate to say this, that life gets in the way.

I have started on the storyboard pass for the second chapter and I will probably go without color at that point. I don't have enough spare time in my personal life to put it out in a reasonable time frame.

>>
>>93691667
Do whatever you prefer. One shots would let you get thorugh stories quicker, but if you want to do multi-chapter arcs, go for it. 22 pages isn't bad for your first comic, it's much more reasonable than trying to do a 1000 page epic from the star. It's easier to start small, but if you're really passionate about an idea for a long story, go for it.

Just get to making comics, gaining the experience will you in the future.

>>93691987
I want it to be about a single character, and I could use this character to explore ideas I have about themes like hope, trust, etc. Simple stories (hopefully) that revolve around a small cast that feel like regular cape comics.
I was just wondering if I should stretch an idea as simple as "You need to believe in yourself!" into multiple issues or would it be easier to do one shots as a beginner? I really want to work in a traditional 20-22 page comic format, but I don't know if it's a good place to start. The closest example I can think of is an episodic cartoon with loose continuity, I want to say Teen Titans but it might be because I was watching it earlier.
>>
>>93692372
That depends entirely around the idea's complexity. If you're dedicating multiple issues to a saturday-morning cartoon level plot, I'd say that's too much. If you're actually challenging the idea and rebuilding it in a deep, clever way, take as much time as makes sense for the pacing.
>>
>>93692372
Hmm okay, having weighed it all... I would suggest writing a practice issue and seeing if you can get a good "tv episode" out in about 5-10 pages. I'd like to see if you can manage it and still feel like the pacing was good. I suspect you can. But if you can't, then yeah go ahead with the 20-22 paradigm. At the very least you'll have a lot of peers to learn from

Contour drawing just means drawing of lines on the outer edges of shapes, most line art is considered contour drawings. I believe the term op was looking for was "gesture drawing."

due to extreme fuckery and having to switch out my hardrive for an older one that works after a month of no computer I have to rewrite all my scripts from scratch and redraw all my webcomic storyboards from memory. I had some amazing storyboards for all 4 of my projects. Plot is very simple for this story. The aunt has a slightly high-level dungeon customized for her niece and nephew's birthday. They explore that dungeon.
Light worldbuilding and making up mechanics as I go is pretty fun. Waiting for my writer friends' feedback so I'm trying to make a cover for the meantime.

Among the Dupe stuff I've uploaded I've neglected to mention a major aspect of his animations is the fact his colors change depending on mood. These are some of the pictures I'll be using to accompany my ratings given in the reviews, more to come.

There's a lot of copypasting here but it's still better than just using one static image at the end of every video like anybody else probably would.
>>
>>93698550
How did she make a whole dungeon? Is it like a simulation thing? Does she know everything that's going to happen? Regardless it's an interesting concept. Do you have any finished art for it yet?

Lots of nice movement and dynamic posing here but their faces are really awkward. I also feel a stronger color palette could work here. Not necessarily high saturation just more remarkable. PPG had green blue and pink and this has like gray, salmon and spicy mustard. Could definitely become something promising though.

She had the dungeon customized by a friend. It's a simulation. She knows what the dungeon's 'special secret' is, but most enemies, layouts, and rewards are procedurally generated.

>>
>>93699377
Not likely. It is possible but the simulation has to be hosted in a very remote IRL location or a very shitty settlement that has no near IRL respawn points. There are checkpoint/respawn points in the simulation itself but these are only accessible around 1/5-1/4 into the dungeon.
Places that host simulations themselves have respawn points accessible. If the place doesn't, you'll respawn in the nearest IRL hospital or clinic.

I think the quality here, the coloring, backgrounds, wrinkles.. is all really good. What I can't like is how peoples' faces look. It's not wrong, I just don't like it. looks to me like the head, chest, and arms are at one scale, and the rest of the body is at a smaller scale
also the head has what appears to be a low, sloping forehead, high ears, and somewhat large nose and eyebrows for a girl. That and the square eyes make her decidedly uncute considering her hairstyle and outfit appear to be going for 'cute'

I don't like most media out currently so I'm wanting to make things that I would like as a consumer. Also creating content and gathering a fanbase is really rewarding and exciting. There's few things in life that make me happier or more motivated than receiving fanart of my creations. I guess I mostly like the social aspect of content creation.

>>93700136
Nah, It's a crazy sci fi setting with aliens and junk so monitor glasses, color changing clothes and weird skin tones are some of the most humdrum of technologies in universe. If anything Dupe is the least "special" character I've made for the setting despite all that being remarkable in a more realism based environment, that's why I'm using him for vaguely reality based stuff like social media and the tie in review series I'm doing. I like the idea of taking someone "average" out of a very strange setting.

>something seems strikingly "off" here. I think her arms are too short and her head is too big.

Yeah, that probably came out weird, but it has to do with some of my narrative hang up about her being a older woman but only 4'7". You couldn't see her crotch but when I was constructing the figure I was going for wrist reach in terms of relative proportion here, it would have been at the same level as her crotch area, but its obscured by her clothing. I will pay more attention about this next time, thanks.

>>93700186

I will be honest, I am not very consistent in the way I draw her, I'll change stuff on a whim but there are some hang ups I kept it so that she isn't just how I found to be cute. Although, it is probably I just unable draw a cute girl...

I think if you're going to draw a background either commit to it, or do one where the information can be "Tricked" into the viewers mind. So like, a motion blur background, or shapes, or shadows.

Right now you clearly drew a background- but there's nothing there, it makes it look like they are fighting in a box

Daily reminder that you can give all the advice you can to help fellow webcomic artists even if your own webcomic ends on hiatus after 17 pages!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOLzS2MmkzQ

No really, you can. That's what many of us do here really.
>>
>>93704468

you've got to lay down that initial sketch. Then if that sketch is too loose, make a tighter sketch over it. Then if that sketch is too loose- etc.

With backgrounds only start inking (especially with perspective backgrounds!) once you know where everything is going to go relative to every other part.

That seems pretty onerous, but still it'll save you time vs endlessly erasing and inking to fix mistakes.

>>93704553

>>
>>93704597
I think you're definitely at the point where you should be diving into comics! A lot of what makes a comic work is just having enough practice making them to get a feel for what you personally like.

You definitely know how to draw, now it's just a matter of applying it to the best of your abilities (which is going to take experimentation)

I think the face of the robber after being punched, as well as the foreground arm are the strongest parts of this page- I feel like you really took time with both and enjoyed the experimentation of the face and the emotion of the arm dropping the knife

>unable to draw a cute girl
your past drawings were more cute. I think somewhere in the process of becoming absolutely godly at action you just lost some of that 'think of the face as a flat texture' amateur shit that is nonetheless cute. It's sorta like how it's hard to get good looking CGI faces
>>
>>93704380
My backgrounds end up spartan because I can't remember what things exist in real life, I've spent a lot more time in really sparse, easy-to-render early 3d videogames and I've gotten used to empty environments. I try to imagine what goes in a place and.. I don't know

It's pretty Picasso overall. Now it's one thing to exaggerate in a way that makes sense in 3d, but this looks like the image was flattened into 2d then smeared or smudged.
Her breasts never come close to being shaped like breasts and their attachment points change constantly, and the way they're shaded softly conflicts with the cel shading of the rest
Let's focus on panel 8: One of her buttcheeks is actually wider than it is tall. A widescreen buttcheek. The leg coming out of that buttock is just as wide, but appears to be as thick as the cheek should have been. It curves in back, but not in front. Her other leg appears to be folded like a cardboard tube and its buttcheek has a round under-crease but doesn't reach the bottom of the thigh.
Her back and shoulders have approximately the right form, at least for stylized art, but one arm having an elbow and the other being a noodle is odd. Also an eye from the side shouldn't look just the same as an eye from the front, it should be squished somewhat because perspective.
Also (and this is one that took me forever), you lift the opposite arm and leg, not the same. Meaning if a person should be lifting one arm in a gesture while walking, the other arm might have to be swung forward anyway, to match the legs, if you drew the legs that way already.

I've heard that before, but they couldn't give enough information to understand what they meant.

I've switched my style a number of times over the years from attempting to mimic Kubert, to anime, back to more western superhero comic style, to now maybe a little more cartoony. I probably also have weird bad habits left from each of those styles.

Looking through artists I follow, a lot of them are anime artists, but that wouldn't be helpful here I think. Also excluding anyone I know-

I like Bruce Timm, how simple and bold he makes things. Joël Jurion, but I'm not sure he posts his artwork anywhere anymore. Ron Lim, although his storytelling and layouts can sometimes be generic. Genevieve Tsai, although she might be a little bit too cartoony. Bill Pressing, kind of for the same reasons as Bruce Timm. Ricken, but her more cartoony artwork, not as much the more realistic stuff. The Kuberts are great at everything, I've wondered if I should use black as a major element like they do.

A few years ago, I thought about switching my style radically to something like this (attached). Although I didn't really experiment with it very much. I thought it might be a little too crazy. I'm certainly open to style-changing advice.

Meet Venessa, a new character that appears in chapter 2 of GGZ coming soon! When she is not in school she is in full cosplay as her furry oc character VENESSA THE BAT! She is not just a goth girl, she is also a hardcore furry! She loves going to my little pony conventions and every other furry conventoin that shows up into town. She is also a member of LAYP, Live Action Yiff Playing!

Sketchbook pro, original character!
>>
More Tomo ahead! I'll be changing his eyes a tad and streamline his mechanical design a little.

All of this plus what you've seen in the past from me will be included in a portfolio for SD Comic Con. I'll be pitching Kinematic, so please wish me luck!

humans/mammals/seals/whales in the ocean and frogs- grow hair, some frogs do grow hair!

fish -grow scales

reptilians - grow feathers

and insects grow spikes! sometimes very fine spikes on flys sometimes look like hair but its not, its very fine spike more like antenna than hair.

You don't have to, but I would strongly suggest focusing on making your comic more visually active instead of dialogue-reliant. Your characters are fun and would lend themselves well to kinetic storytelling and it makes the act of doodling your comics more varied and (hopefully) fun.

Less neutral standing, more emoting and doing!
>>
>>93725467
Thanks for the advice, I honestly don't know anything about storytelling, so that would probably be better for me.
>>
>>93725513
It's hard to just think-of-stuff sometimes. Probably the hardest thing in comicry if we're honest, probably because anytime it's not really hard, it's easy and just flows out.

>>93663909
If you ever see something called nitro punch it's a friends work
He does everything I just help with story ideas and writing
It's a city or rather world where people with a myriad of abilities participate in a tournament for various reasons
Think a superhero boxing story
Except they're not heroes they just compete
Some Ideas include
>Man who yells out every one of his moves and is defeated because he telegraphs everything he does
>Man who gambles for power, only way he is beaten is by outside events ending him with a gambling addiction that causes him to wager mid fight, lose, and knockout
>Twin bros interconnected, the father apart they are the more out of sync their attacks are, the only way to fully disconnect them is to kill one but that's against tourney rules, so instead one of them is knocked out, the other one fills up with his friends power but has too much to control and runs straight into a wall, losing
>Jaguar tiger aztec warrior type character with steam engines on his shoulder that propel his punches
>mute woman who's won the tournament and now roam around fighting things because it's basically her job, controls sound waves, is protagonist mentor
>Protagonist has abilities stripped away and now fights the challengers who all took away his powers because he used to be a cocky asshole and now has to earn his abilities back
>>
>>93727800
So far we have up to "chapter" 10, with quotes because it's more like sections of story, and the tournament works in brackets
>1. To set up the world, setting, main character and his motivations
>2. To show main character in action
>3. Has powers stripped away by the main challengers for being a cocky fuckbag
>4.Mopes around and tries to return to regular life, decides he can't and tries to do training by following online tutorials, diets, exercises, psychic mediums, other things, tried finding a mentor but gets rejected by everyone
>5. Sets up the main mentor, mute champion with sound control abilities, who he sees at 5 in the morning after a jog, she's returning from the corpse of a giant robot sipping her drink and still in her pajamas, thus setting up the character, he trains with her and whatever
>6. Man he met at gym who wasn't showing off (jaguar man) is his sparring partner, learns first lesson in training
>7. Faces first Challenger, gets the pattern of adventure in motion between analyzing opponent, training, going in, while jaguar man fights in his separate bracket
>8. Fights second Challenger, one of the guys who stole his powers in 3
>9. Third Challenger, things set into motion, final reveal shows his and jaguar mans brackets have crossed paths and now he must fight his friend
>10. They fight, jaguar loses but goes into losers bracket with a chance to redeem himself, they go get ice cream and finally consider each other friends rather than co-workers or competitors
>>
I'm getting a strange hair up my ass to write, but I worry that my writing can be summarized as "angsty trite." Is there some basic pitfalls to writing children for someone to avoid? Is writing them as emotional, less experienced adults the best way?
>>
>>93727958
well first of all, trite is an adjective. I think you were going for 'tripe'
when it comes to kids, you will never please everyone. For some reason nobody but me remembers what it was like being a kid, and people will whine that your kids seem too mature if you write them properly. Most write them far too immature. Basically a kid is an adult minus patience and experience, but plus confidence and a little more selfishness.
as for angst, just make sure the reader is properly along for the ride and feels for the characters, and if you fail, work harder. don't just up the emotional level and hope that will work. That's where shit gets into edge mode. It's the same principle behind incompetent singing teachers who solve being off-key with upping the volume
>>
>>93727958
Try not to go too cliche and remember the reverse of a cliche is still a cliche
Portraying them as naturally stupid is egotistical and dumb in a
>HAHA KIDS RIGHT LOOK HOW RETARDED THEY ARE
portraying them as wise adults is overplayed and doesn't make sense
The best thing would be to go by age
The youngest are naive and tend to do annoying things, but not necessarily be stupid, they'll speak their mind when they think they should even when they shouldn't and say dumb things
Around 10-12 they start cracking dumb jokes and wanting to act mature but still behave naively and childishly
14-16 is naive young adults who don't know what they're doing but think they do, and sometimes might actually know something better than another person
>>
>>93728022
>>93728024
Thank you both, I definitely don't want to make the two mistakes of
>Kids are dumb lol,
>Kids are adults, but smarter.
I want them to still be naive, but reasonable. (With an exception here or there.) I want something a tad morbid, but not exactly in a traditional sense, not bloody, or guts spilling out, but more of a twisting of the knife in the heart? I want some, well I can't think of the term, hmm.

If you're going for psychopath, they tend to look at people as possessions. So have it clear the that character likes this person because he sees them as belonging to him.

If you ever got popular some people would still misunderstand it but they'd probably have some mental problems of their own.

Well now this is a take I didn't really consider before, mostly because I have never really tried an approach on a legit psycopath. I guess him going for the girl more out of selfishness would work fine, it's not like it will last anyway.

My problem kinda comes from the scenario where another villain tries to play mental games with him by using her memory. My only guess is either him not giving a fuck or being more hurt on the pride than on the feels. "Did you really think I would break with some cheap tricks" or something like that.

The middle image in the top row has a lot of empty, unused space. Also, its generally accepted that the word balloon should "float" and the stem should be on the bottom.

In the very bottom panel, the author could probably use the space a little better, because you don't really want the word balloons to be breaking eye contact if two characters are talking to each other.

Here's a WIP of the page for this week. Drawing big breasts can be an extra challenge, usually I draw and ink the entire person without any breasts, and then edit the picture to add them (to explain panel 4).

She's the lead in my superhero comic "Pulse".

>>93717553
Yeah, it's not reasonable to change quickly. The example here is the same character from my comic (if that wasn't obvious). I'd have to come up with a redesign for each character, and then try to phase them in. Or alternatively try to just experiment a little here and there with less of a goal in mind.

I feel like I've had the characters sort of over-detailed in the past, and I've already been trying to at least slightly simplify them.

In the redesign example, I worry I went too far with changes- like maybe I should draw lips (instead of just coloring lips), and while making clothes smooth with no folds would be different, maybe that'll look strange. I'm not sure how I would handle shading, here there's only a little messy brush shading, and that may or may not work well with backgrounds.

>>93719483
I'm not sure what to say to that. Either the page must have had a date listed, or it was really memorable.

It's not like most psychopaths are this big dramatic cackling loon, just a simple person who seems okay until you realize his thinking is completely inherently evil and devoid of love for others.
I'm not sure what you mean about the problem, there's no reason he can't act genuinely distressed by being fucked with using her memory. If anything, how viciously angry he gets would be a hint towards his true nature, but continue making him sympathetic
>>
>>93741794
well I'm not seeing anything animelike here, seemingly the opposite. and that might be the problem
>>
>>93741881
I meant when I switched out of anime before there were a lot of things I needed to unlearn and kept accidentally doing. I've probably successfully de-anime-d at this point.
>>
>>93741863
The problem is exactly the sympathetic bit. Is kinda hard for me wanting to find a good balance between having a sympathetic moment (in this case him actually liking someone) yet not wanting the readers to forget he is a very despicable individual outside of just that one exception in his life that doesn't exist anymore to give him any redemption points. I guess the issue is not wanting to get more sympathy than what he should get, as weird as it may sound.

This is why you fit the balloon to the text, not the other way around.

With translated manga, the letterer has to make do with whatever space is available. But if you're drawing it yourself, you can make the necessary space in advance.

>>
>>93741794
You're problem seems to be that you do try only to copy styles and not practice the basics like anatomy where you can build up your style from knowledge.

Your lines are confident, but your color work is bad. Your characters don't seem to turn their heads because you can't draw the head at different angles. Similarly they move stiffly.

I was really surprised to hear how long you've been working on comics because you don't really give off that level of competence one should have from just doing it that long.

Little from column A, little from column B.

While you're still sketching the layout, you need to determine how much text there is in the panel, how much space it will take up and where it will fit (without obscuring important details).

The speechbubble then fits around the text in the space that you reserved for it.

Literally just "wow, you sure do suck!" It adds nothing to your criticism. On top of that, your advice wasn't even very good. The only things of worth you had to say were "stop copying, learn the basics, and try new angles." Good advice, yeah, but vague and not as specific as it could be.

I know people shrug off criticism here all the time, but please, take my critique of your critique to heart. A little more effort can make for a far more informative post and ending on a paragraph about how the artist sucks is just going to make them less likely to listen to you.

There's a point where the artist can only benefit from hard work with some pointers to where they need to improve.

Though I am sorry to the artist that someone choosing to white knight them might leave a tarnish on their reputation.

I think your art is pretty nice, as people have mentioned before your lines are quite pleasing to look at. The backgrounds are lacking in some of that line variation, and end up looking pretty weak. However, the chest, and breasts, are distracting. I mean yeah, her knockers are huge, but they don't seem to grow off the chest, because there doesn't seem to be a chest. In attached, red is the construction, and I tried to make the largest the boobs can be without them sagging. I've also tried bringing attention to other errors regarding the chest.
Secondly, you want to show off these female bodies so much, you avoid covering it up, which leads to awkward speech-bubble placement, and weak composition. For instance, in the first panel, perspective lines cause us to focus on her chest (surprise), the extra bold lines detailing the curve doesn't really help either. The rest of the lines in the comic just don't hold the same quality. The best speech bubble placement has the tail leading toward the mouth, and it's just really apparent in the first and fourth panel where the tails and speech bubbles look really awkward.
If this was a porn comic, sure, don't let my comment bother you. But if you told me that the strongest aspect of your comic was your story and art, I don't think I could believe you.

if I recall, it's not porn but her breasts are meant to be supernatural in origin.. not porn but a similar excuse to deviate from reality. They really are distracting, though. I'm more concerned with her face. Every time I see that nose and that brow, I think of this guy from the Aladdin series

>>
>>93756599

>>93752948
>If this was a porn comic
It actually used to be, or rather very NSFW with nipples and such, but he rebooted it as SFW because I guess the BE fetish market doesn't want lewdness anymore or something.

You're making suggestions about the character's breasts when them being that unrealistically big is the entire point of the comic.
>>
>>93756804
You know, when I really think about it, I think I could get over the hurdle of drawing after some practice. My biggest issue is probably translating things into strips. I've written books (not with much success, but they got out into the world all the same), and that's sort of how I write things.
>>
>>93756882
>hears you'll need money
>"when I really think about it, I think I could get over the hurdle of drawing after some practice"
yes! you can! However you got there, it's good you're open to that
No guarantee you'll ever be GOOD, but you can get better than you are now.
>>
>>93757203
Oh yeah, money is a great motivator. Thanks for your kind words anon, it's helpful.
>>
>>93756865
I mean sure they can be big, but any bigger and then they're saggy, if that's the intention, then sure!
But it's the fact that they don't seem to be attached to the chest, that bothers me. Even Bruce Timm and Bill Presing's art depicts breasts responding to gravity and human anatomy.
>>
>>93757460
well i think breasts are different levels of... yknow, inflated. two different women can have identical breast VOLUME but one has a lot larger skin area, so hers hang more. Logically the reverse could be true, most women with knockers that big it's got a higher ratio of skin to breast tissue than this lady here. hers would be the equivalent of L-cups, but contained within the skin of typical J-cups, thus balloonier instead of saggy
You never ever see that though
>>
>>93748874
Thank you! I hope this already gives a good indicator to the Personality of each character by first glance
>>

>>
>>93757588
I think I get what you mean, but I don't think it works like that.
If she did not have muscles, with pecs underneath, and she was just a doll with stuffing in her boobs, then yeah I can agree with that. I just can't think of an example where boobs behave like that, fake, real, or drawn. It just doesn't make much sense.
>>
>>93756642
I'll make one free for you, i'm bored, post what you want
>>
>>93758183
You're probably right inasmuch as breast tissue is probably never firm enough to support anything that big. Like, any soft substance has a limit to how high you can pile it... but it's within spitting distance of 'eh it's a cartoon you can exaggerate the physics a little'. like if they were about 15% more realistic i'd call it close enough

Personally, I'd recommend you to just find people you know can draw and talk to them irl, eventually you'll find someone who's willing to collaborate if you get lucky. If you're really dedicated, also make a workmap and go to comic conventions and just speak to small time artists directly. Good luck.

It's possible I don't understand what you mean by "copy styles". I did list artists I think look good, but I don't remember ever actively trying to mimic any of them when drawing- and I had worried that was a flaw in my practice. I'm not that organized, I just draw the comics in the most direct way possible.

What don't you like about my coloring?

Why would you say I can't draw heads at different angles? I'm sure there have been pages recently with side-views of heads. Maybe I'm not being creative enough with poses and povs though. Stiffness is always a challenge for me.

Maybe I was just really bad when I started doing comics? I don't know how to argue that, there are people who seem to go from stick figures to professional artists in only a few years. I don't disagree with you, but I am posting in a thread about getting critiques for your comic, so I wouldn't be posting here if I thought I had no problems.

People who do comics on a schedule often get better in art for the first few years, and then they stagnate or get worse in art. The problem is they are always trying to streamline their process, meet deadlines, and make their characters look consistent. It's a challenge to do that and improve.

You brought up some things to review, I'll save your picture and screenshot the text and try to look over it beyond just responding.

I guess having Evilyn in that panel was kind of weird.

The cartoony picture does have weird anatomy. I had tried using several examples of cartoon art for inspiration and they had weird anatomy that I experimented with here.

I do try to draw out her body and then add the breasts. Sometimes things look weird, awkward, I make mistakes, or it seems like I intended for a shameless boob shot. It's certainly a lot harder to draw her than if she had smaller breasts. I think in retrospect I wouldn't have had her so busty. But that was kind of a point of the comic, that she's a excessively busty superhero.

Maybe I do focus too much on the women, I'll have to keep that more in mind. I've never thought it was a bad thing if people also liked to see the women in the comic. But it is a bad thing if it's hurting the other elements.

The explanation for the boobs. I did an older comic that was pure fan-service. Then comics later, I decided to restart that old comic and attempt to take that shallow comic and try to make it a semi-plausible superhero comic as a challenge. I thought it would be unique and interesting enough that it might work out.

I wanted to take the really cliche origin- that she got huge boobs when they tried to give her better powers, and follow certain rules- she's viewed as a little abnormal by the other characters, it didn't solve all her problems, it's a complication, it didn't destroy her life, not all the guys are after her, she doesn't have a severe love or hate reaction to the change.

It didn't though turn out the way I expected. Most comments are either from those that like the story but don't like her breasts, or from people who like the breasts but think she seems better suited for nudity.

Okay, try to make them less buoyant.
