One of the reasons why Peter had to man up and grow up fast was because of Ben's death, and not just because of the whole "I didn't stop my uncle's killer" but because Ben Parker was also the breadwinner in the house and once he died, the bills piled up, Aunt May couldn't handle everything, so Peter had to step up and work to help her keep their home.

And that shit is still a reality for many teens from low income families to modest middle class families (and I think Peter belongs in the latter). I graduated High School two years ago and I knew two brothers who worked part time jobs to help their single mother (who worked two full time jobs) pay the bills, and their sister who was 13 years old couldn't work but she would babysit after school or do yard work for the neighbors to earn money.

I mean it's not the average teenage life but teens having to grow up and becoming adults fast is a very real thing that still happens.

I dunno, even if this is a younger Spider-Man, Peter Parker, despite being a teenager, called himself "Spider-Man," and not "Spider-Boy," for a reason.

When he puts on the mask, he pretends that he's not that nerdy kid anymore. He pretends he's an adult. People THINK he's an adult. They don't know it's a boy under there.

The anonymity of the mask is what lets him transform from a shy, awkward nebbish, to somebody who mocks his enemies in the face of danger.

Peter Parker can be all fanboyish about the Avengers when he's alone and safe from the gaze of those he wants the respect of. But when he's in the costume, he's gotta pretend that he's not intimidated of standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Iron Man.
