More like a weird wrestling-flavored combo of Silver Age insanity and modern continuity. The company is separated into Seasons, has deep-reaching continuity and storylines that have lasted years, and even gone as far as to temporarily shut down the company and permanently kill off characters for the sake of storylines.

Marchie Archie and his time-travelling escapades is one of the most interesting stories ever told in wrestling, because they actually kept the timeline in order. I'm a bit rusty on it since I'm not the biggest Chikara fan, but the gist is that Archie at one point in the early 2010s goes to the future and uses a Yearbook from 2016 to get the upper hand on somebody back in the present. In 2015, the big bad of the Season, Deucalion, murders Archie (which was a cover for him winding down his wrestling career). Later, in the 2016 Season Finale, Archie shows up in a brief segment to show that this was the moment he grabbed the yearbook; he also learned of his fate at the hands of Deucalion, retroactively adding a tragic element to his entire character since his return to his own time.

Also they recently filmed an entire season in secret and put it out after they had already started the season afterwards, so people had zero context as to why certain people had come out of retirement or held championships for a little while. Every show in that season was named after a LOST episode.

Kaiju Big Battel is pretty similar, but in the same sort of bubble as Chikara (to the point where its main villain has appeared multiple times in Chikara). Also KBB almost never makes tape so it's really hard to actually follow any sort of continuity.

Beyond that, not really. Wrestling storytelling is a lot more like long-running comics in that you have arcs that generally are isolated but have consistent characters and mild continuity. They can be satisfying for sure, but eventually they fade into a new status quo.

Sometimes you can extrapolate a long-form story out of a wrestler's career, but it's often coincidental and has an element of reality to it. Katsuyori Shibata, for instance, has a career that tells the story of a promising young talent who leaves the company that trained him for the world of MMA where he tries his hardest but fails ultimately, and then returns to the company he left behind as a traitor and an outsider, his only real friend there being a guy he knew since high school, earning the respect of his peers through sheer effort and determination, only to have his career cut short by his own recklessness and want for success and acceptance. In reality, pretty much all of that was just how his actual life went, sadly including Shibata tragically headbutting himself into retirement in the match that was supposed to catapult him into being a legit top guy, but in wrestling where lines between real and fake are often intentionally blurred people can pick up on that kind of thing. To marginalize his injury as a story would be wrong, but to look at his career and see what he was able to accomplish is really something.

In general, Wrestlemania is the "season finale" of each wrestling "season" and the post-WM PPV either starting a new "season" or serving as an epilogue for the season (which starts in May).

But they only really really hype up the "season" factor from January through March/April, as far as writing and planning goes. Partly because they have to figure out the WM event before Royal Rumble since setting up the plot point that whoever wins the Royal Rumble faces the main champion at Wrestlemania.

Modern All Japan is the most straight-forward of the Japanese indies so you're in luck; DDT is full-blown wacky and has a good amount of continuity, BJW is split between big beefy dudes and deathmatches, Dragon Gate has an exceedingly fast and complex wrestling style and a TON of continuity, and most smaller indies are really esoteric.

The gist is that over the almost 2 years, Kento Miyahara has been the new ace of the company, upending the previous top guy Suwama. Miyahara's Triple Crown title reign brought a lot of prestige and hype to the company (watch every single match he has had involving that title since the beginning of last year). There's also Zeus & The Bodyguard, aka The Big Guns, who are pretty popular and dominate the tag scene for the most part. Watch Zeus's singles matches with Sekimoto & Okabayashi from last year in AJPW, just because they're both fantastic. Bodyguard is 48 despite having only 6-7 years experience but he's fucked ripped and has a lot of charisma so he's cool.

New Explosion from Sumo Hall this past November was a big show for the new All Japan direction. It had a ton of variety, multiple good/great matches, and a large crowd. AJPW is currently run by Jun Akiyama who in the company's heyday was the young guy who mixed it up with the top guys like Kobashi & Misawa but who is now a hardened veteran.

A good place to continue once you've watched New Explosion and Kento's reign through the Bodyguard defense this past February is the Champion Carnival tournament to decide a #1 Contender; you can skip some of the less important shows if you want. Then watch Kento vs the tournament winner, which was a phenomenal match.

Yes. His name is Daryl, and he's had him since he lost the Jr. Heavyweight title to KUSHIDA. Hiromu had a romantic relationship with the title, which he had named Mr. Belt, and Daryl is how he as a character is filling that void.

There's a lot of really interesting character bits in what Hiromu's done in the space of only half a year. He seems incapable of healthy relationships with people; he either gets raw semi-sexual pleasure from putting himself and others in imminent danger in matches or feels overwhelming romantic feelings for inanimate objects.

The only story in New Japan this year that can compare in terms of quality is Liger's last BOSJ run, losing every match until his last-ever match in a tournament he made into what it is today against super-shit heel Taichi. Taichi vs Liger is proof that with a good story you can still put on a fantastic match, as on paper it's an old man against a guy who isn't a very good wrestler and is all gimmick.

The closest thing to integration is DDT having its own joshi promotion under its banner (Tokyo Joshi Pro) and a few women on its regular roster. What >>93652522 said is pretty correct though, although there's still some good wrestling in modern joshi. Rossy Ogawa of Stardom would just rather book pretty blonde foreigners instead of women who can wrestle.

They did have a mixed tag team match like two years ago, of Anderson, Gallows, and Gallows's wife Amber (who I think has maybe left him as of now, I'm not sure) vs Maria Kanellis, Mike Bennett, & Matt Taven. It was not good.

NJPW cards are already bloated to hell with their huge roster that is growing both in size (occasional signings along with a LOT of young lions) and in terms of things to fight over (the IWGP US Title is their 8th active championship). Adding women would shrink card space even further and either doom some guys to total irrelevancy or doom the women to be irrelevant from Day 1.

ROH has a women's division now (via Stardom partnership), but that's pretty shit overall. The only Stardom women who have even come over thus far is just Kris Wolf. They didn't book Kairi or Io before WWE scooped them up, and even if they got Mayu she'd have almost nobody good to work with.

It's for the best right now that New Japan stays as it is.
