What does /co/ think of Max Landis?

He's fine when he just writes stories and doesn't try to wank about how much he thinks he understands characters like in the Superman/Joker story. American Alien is pretty good.

Superman/Joker was an absolute abortion of a comic book. That being said, I thought American Alien was decent enough. I think it's a bit overrated though, it's pretty average as far as Superman stories go

Green Valley is pretty fun if a bit iffy in the dialogue at points, but voice has never been his strong suit. At all. It scratches a Fright Night itch though really well.

His dialogue writing is too "quirky" (i.e. Annoying cunts trying too hard to be funny) and that undermines any interesting ideas his original pitch might have had. Granted, I haven't seen any of his good work (which apparently is American Alien and Chronicle), I've just watched American Ultra, Me Him Her, and read some of his posted work on here. I will say that he gives good writing advice, and he pitches like a champ, which is how you make it in Hollywood. But he's kind of like if Edgar Wright was this unlikable and untalented male feminist that lacked any self awareness

American Alien was decent....however it felt a lot more like an early 2000's film's take on the character. Not only that, but it felt -- for lack of a better word -- "Marvelized". He humanized him very well. Maybe TOO well. Annoyingly well. I wouldn't have a problem with this if he didn't boast about how much he "gets" Clark/Superman, because in American Alien, it's clearly HIS Clark/Superman. Now then again, I loved some of his ideas for American Alien. I just think that it was not as amazing as others say it is. Maybe it just strayed too far from the norm for me -- and that's my fault for my own preference/taste -- but it seemed like it was trying to be Superman's development in the most normie way possible. It felt like Ultimate Spider-Man, in a way.


It does have problems, though, and depending on your tolerance, they may be quite iritating. Pic related is an example. It shows Deathstroke with this cutesy dialkogue and whatnot. And it's not only an isolated incident -- this is prevalent in Max's style. He has what I call "Normie Humor". I mean, would you ever REALLY picture Deathstroke saying something like this? It's not done because that's how the character would speak, it's done because it's supposed to be funny...and if you're a normie/casual/whatever, you might laugh. If you're not though, you might think "Gee, this is like a Modern Marvel comic". And in many ways...it is. Just not AWFUL.

So if you want a neat take on the Man of Steel almost in the vein of something like Marvel's Ultimate universe (RIP), check it out. If you don't like that sorta stuff, then maybe you should think twice.

So bravo for Max for making a decent comic, but I don't believe it's truly "Fantastic" but do believe it to be pretty good. I'd recommend buying it via digital copies though. Buy physical ones if you are really curious about it and want all the issues.

It's just a neat take on Superman with a little of "le ebin year". Thank god it has no politics.
