I don't get it. Who's "us" in this context?

Is the point that he has spent his life engrossed in the past, and therefore failed to make a life for himself? Which is weird, seeing how he apparently has a large, comfortable house and a grandchild.

Perhaps it is a metaphor, in which many people are extolled that perhaps we will never get to see, blinded in an obsession without realizing that we, despite our supposed insignificance, are also part of this world, only when we achieve something great, we are Recognized but there are people who do much for others and always go unnoticed.
