No, they're still in the movie quite a bit, they're just not in the /majority/ of the film. They leave Gru because he's not evil enough for them and try to find an evil person good enough to take them. But we cut away from the main story a few times to see how their journey is going. As for the fetishist thing, there's a scene in the film when they're all taking a shower, no towels or anything, just straight up nude.

Gru didn't kidnap people to turn them into minions, he created them out of corn kernels if I recall correctly. But you're right about the Minions being originally conceptualized as Gru's creation.

Minions (the movie) retconned this for literally no reason. There's plenty of stuff to do with the Minions despite their original concept. It could have been a decent prequel to Despicable Me.

The new canon really hits you like a truck in DM3. It makes no sense that suddenly the Minions decide to abandon Gru when the previous two movies were literally about Gru getting one-upped by other villains over and over again (which makes the Minions switch loyalties so easily in their own movie). Hell, Gru was already doing non-villain work at the half of the second movie, and the Minions didn't betray him there.

I feel that making the Minions regret deserting Gru in the newest movie is a sign that even the people at Illumination think the retcon was a dumb fucking thing to do.

It's unbelievably unremarkable. The entire plot is the two dogs getting lost, and nothing beyond that. There really isn't any huge climax besides one getting stuck in a car.

There's a part where one of the dogs reveals he got lost one day and couldn't find his old owner and home. Literally 2 minutes later he finds the house and discovers the owner is dead and then within 5 minutes he's over it and it's never discussed again.
