And keep in mind, these concepts are great, but not for the type of show SU is. These are designs for a post-apocalyptic magical weird show, set in a he man type world but with girls and without silly costumes.
The pilot is a great example on why the art style wouldnt have worked. The intro is the most metal shit ever, and the plot is just "kid fucks up after playing with time to annoy his friend".
Trust me, you would be getting the exact same show, except with this weird art style that would make it look jarring.

That said, we're still CERTAINLY going to see a harmonious, fully formed Cluster later on.

What the fuck, no it didn't. Rebecca Sugar and her low-rent staff ruined Steven Universe. It was very clear by the end of Season 2 that the type of story they're trying to tell is way out of their skill set. Nobody working on the show is a particularly good writer or animator and the only reason so many people who are into Western Animation are so enamored with it is because it's one of the only cartoons on air right now that tries to have "emational moments" instead of being a straight up comedy. If you watch anything besides American cartoons you'd find much better stories told with even less of the time of what Steven Universe has.

How can you guys fawn over the pilot gem designs? They are ugly overdesigned characters that instead of looking like tumblr, look like they were drawn by some angsty teen girl in her artbook in highschool. Its a visual clusterfuck of someone trying to make them look like they're from a certain time period. Its like they just wanted all the gems to look like gaudy 80s leg-warmer wearing stick figures. They were trying way too hard to make them look unique and ended up making them all look the same. They look like all the retarded runway fashion designs that people make fun of.

I don´t really agree with the idea that the townie episodes are the ones ruining the show. The first season has a lot of townie episodes and most people thing is the best season.

Even so SU writing has this recurring problem where most problems are solved in the most underwelming way posible.
The cluster is solved really easily to the point it took longer to decide who would build the drill to get there.
Jasper got defeated before she could unleash her monster army.
the first encounter with the main "villians" is a stealt mission while they have a family crisis and when Steven is finally face to face with the diamonds they gave him a relatively fair trial.
Even the big problem of him being stranded on an alien planet got solved pretty much by accident.

Is not to say there is not conflict on the show but most of it are internal issues between the crystal gems not with their enemies. which worked back in the first season where it was mostly slice of life with some fantasy episodes but now that si suppose to be an space opera with actual antagonist the writing style doesn´t work as well.

Which, as you said, worked fine for the early seasons when the plot was minimal and the focus was mainly on slice of life stories.
