The main thing wrong with Marvel is that the comic books don't need to make as much money when the movies make so much so Disney is okay with the comics have a progressive agenda. And even if Disney wanted it to change the Marvel leadership are all on board with the agenda so it would take removing all of them at once to really change things so they can go back to being good. DC on the other hand is eating their lunch.

It seems to me like in 2017 companies have pulled back hard from the height of the "read this or you're a bad racist person" campaigns of 2014-16. It's not just that the political content of Secret Empire is toned down from the Cap run that preceded it.

For a little while there was this weird campaign in media to turn everything political because they thought that was what Millennials wanted.

It's using the same writers that nobody likes.
It's not got any decent artistic talent minus a few exceptions like Samnee and Del Mundo.

It's not just a problem of big companies or comic books at all. It's just storytelling industry over the last 40 years have produced more stuff than entire humanity during all the past centuries. There is literally nothing else to tell.

I think its height might have actually been around 2013 which was when terms like "social justice warrior" and gamergate exploded, with 2014-15 being when the ensuing retarded culture wars infected EVERYTHING. Not trying to make this an overly political comment but I really think Trump winning had a lot to do with their change in strategy. Just like media and politicians trashing the most consistent voting bloc, Marvel was shitting on the demographic that makes up their biggest customers.

They don't understand that a character can appeal to different demographics without changing their physical appearance or incorporating hamfisted political statements. The argument is that Marvel always hamfisted political statements, this is true. But nobody praises or remembers those comics because they were a dime a dozen. People remember good one-shot stories more than anything, and they very rarely involved real world politics.

Spider-man doesn't have to be black to identify with him, his real-life struggles are understandable with anybody. If the problem is black people aren't interested in the actual story or comics, then incorporate shit that they want to see. Comics are too white, but not because they have white characters, but because the structure of them is only appealing to white people. If comics focused more on action and violence, the number of black readers might go up. The reasoning, black people fucking love DBZ. Almost nobody in DBZ is black, but people love Goku and the characters regardless.

We being real? Comics has the same issue as game development right now. You have this clique where they feel the desperate need to be taken seriously. They want to be seen as social activists instead of people that make comic books and video games. The problem is they make comic books and video games. And comic books and video games are comic books and video games. It doesn't matter how edgy and loud you try and get, you're making comic books and video games.

This is the aspect of it that I thought was weird. That sometimes the comic shop nerds will absolutely hate normie casuals that enter their store and buy something frustratingly mainstream, or get something because a movie just came out. When they should be thinking business is good, because X brought someone in here and they are spending money. It's still money for their business that I at least hope they are doing to make a living for themselves.

This does not happen at too many other stores. People at other stores do not give a shit of some random customer is not super into the same thing as they, or knew enough detailed information to be let in the front door. They just want the money.

Do clothing stores want you gone if you do not know all about the personal life of the designer, outdoor stores want you out if you came from a suburb, do car dealerships want you out if you know absolutely nothing about engines or care about the stats of a vehicle?

Part of this is because for a lot of people who run comic shops, it's about being fan first and a business second. It's one of the reasons why so many comic shops fail; they're just bad at business and have no idea what they're doing. They hire their friends and they treat their shop like a club hangout for their buddies instead of a store. That's no way to run a business and it's no surprise that most of these shops end up failing. It's not just comics, either. I've seen /tg/ stores do the same thing.

When a new movie comes out, my LCS will have a shelf dedicated to trades and recs for fans of the movies, to make it easier for secondaries to get into the comics. Of the three comic shops in my general area, mine is the only one that does this. You'd think it'd be common sense to take advantage of huge mainstream appeal like that, but it's shockingly uncommon.

The problem with Marvel is that their writing their 'diverse' characters as tokens & toting them around as the best while DC is writing them like actual characters(For the most part).
The quality of their writing has taken a nose dive, hiring people who don't read comics or don't give a shit about continuity to make said diverse characters the new Spider-man only to fall flat on their ass, with a few exceptions.
No one is paying attention to the good comics Marvel produces because they are over-shadowed by the poorly produced Marvel crap, because there is A LOT of that.
Apparently, employees are trying to one up each other instead of working together to handle their universe well, with a few exceptions.
Event Fatigue. Not even that, their Events can also be Majorly Shit, which then inturn effects some of the good comics, like what CW2 did to Ultimates & HOLY SHIT.
