This isn't really as outstanding as some of King's earlier works man.

The story is really derivative of mainstream tropes, you can pretty much predict where story is going to go. I don't understand the Donny Cates meme, it's just generic but yeah it has some heart and good themes, nothing really spectacular though.
It's also possible that I may have become too jaded to enjoy things but then something great comes along and affirms my criticism of generic stuff.

I don't see how it's derivative. In any other story when the god first came to take the sword it would be battles right away. But in this they sit under a tree and talk. The family is REAL and not a poster family that so many comics do. The ending didn't quite land how I wanted it to, but I think that was more my personal taste than the story's flaws.

It was tropey as fuck dude. Like how the son first comes and says we'll I'll fight you again and then they fought, I could tell pretty much that it would end in front of old man's family with old man realizing the nature of his intentions and actions. Or how he gets his dead wife back and you can tell how emotional beats are going to play out from there. The family is also cardboard cutouts and I thought there were allusions to some depth in God King's character earlier on but he just becomes the generic evil all powerful "I'll destroy you and everything you love" archetype.
I don't know, it was predictable as fuck in everything, action or emotional set pieces. Art was pretty great though and I like that they were trying to focus on emotional implications but being six issues and decompressed as fuck, nothing was really fleshed out except for old man maybe.

It played on a lot of tropes, but broke the mold enough for me to wonder if his son was actually going to resolve the whole thing. I was wondering how far his son would go from the first issue cause he was being pulled away so hard. The one thing I wish we got more of is his son's wife, cause she is cardboard and just acts to pull him away. Most of the time she is right, but she has no personality.

Could literally tell he was going to fight his dad as soon he decided to go back, another one of many predictable things I forgot to mention. Also generic evil guy being generic evil is not a good excuse. Earlier on there were some things that suggested he may have depth or get some character development when he says how sword is his legacy to pass down and stuff. In the end it all amounted to not much at all. And I don't really know how you can say it's playing with the tropes when it's playing it straight and being really predictable.

Having a sword like that would enable me to solve many of our word's problems. Too bad that some random stuff that makes you a superhero only happens in cartoons and comic books.
