>>
They sell. Next question.
>>
>>93553277
America was coming out of a depression when they got popular and people were escapists and wanted heroes
>>
>>93553292
And then the comics code cut the balls of the industry in the 50s.
>>
If it doesnt have costumes, is it still capeshit?

If it's mainstream it's probably capeshit. Otherwise it's indie shit that no one heard about. The comic book industry as a whole needs to change.
>>
>>93553283
>They sell
HAHAHAHHAHAHA

Tripfag saying shit. Do you know how much tintim, Monica's gang, Asterix, Disney comics and other Mangas in generals sell MORE than capeshit comics? Hell, I'd argue that USA has one of the worst comic industries, because they sell 1/10 of what other countries do.

They sell better than indies, generally. And I don't think it's fair comparing stand-outs to western comics.

Why? In USA's case, big 2 shit ARE the stand-outs.

But he mentioned plenty of non American western comics. It just happens to be countries where they don't face pic related problems. The comic industry of USA is shit.

This guy right here ruined comics

Comics code hurt just about every genre but capeshit because capeshit was willing to be more kiddy
Some titles/publishers got around it a bit and kept publishing horror, romance, etc but they eventually died out
>>
>>93553510
SAVED
I'm just saying over in America, capeshit sells more than Indie stuff. That's why it's so prevalent.
Though I spend half my year in Belgium and I feel I face the same issue, except there's a vaster selection of indies and usually higher quality.

This
I remember a statistic that said that one piece was the third most sold manga/comic in history.
Only behind superman and batman, and those two were around for nearly 80 years. Meanwhile one piece was around for only 20 years.

I watched the same video, homie. If we watched the same video that is. I'd say One Piece could overtake it, but it's looking like One Piece's sales are dropping like crazy.
>>
>>93553277
Blame the Comics Code. It literally killed diversity of genres.

Why does censorship have to ruin everything?
Because of a fucking stamp an entire industry is now stagnant and decadent.

They actually don't make much more.
Including international sales, manga books (as a whole) make as much as comics (just comics) a year. The American comic industry, however, has all that money going into primarily 3 companies, while Japan has it scattered across hundreds.

Merchandising is where a lot of other money comes in.
>>
>>93553277
The CCA fucked all the comics that were actually trying to push the envelope and Marvel and DC thrived in a neutered market that awarded mediocrity.

>>93553664
I don't see why everyone just straight out blames the "Industry" unless by that you mean the entire comic reading populace as a whole. Capes do sell here better than any other books. Shops sell manga too and it doesn't do well, not in America, not in the since that look how much better this sells than your average cape book.

I'm sure I've said this before about other topics dealing with sales, but companies (ALL COMPANIES) provide what the reader buys most. No significant number of people in America are buying "slice of life" or "romance" As many excuses as Marvel makes about why they have low sales or being more inclusive, Simply look at the books that do well. Look at DC going back to what performs best. THAT is the majority of the American market. This is what people overwhelmingly ask for. It's the long running trend, it's the history, it's the culture. It might be lingering parts of >>93553653 but the overall attitude is comics/manga - cartoons/anime is a kids medium. And that kind of product sells fantastical stories best. There's no need for nuance or emotional depth, action is what sells, heroes are what sell.

Even the anime that gets exported here and does exceedingly well, makes waves, is basically cape shit with a Jap flavor. One Piece, One Punch Man, My Hero Academia. All super powered adventure shows. Capes do well, companies make cape books because the majority of people want capes.

My understanding is that companies at the time supported the code specifically because they wanted to kill horror comics, that were selling fucktons of copies back in the day and seriously rivalizing with capes. Horror magazines wouldn't survive under the code.
>>
>>93555360
You must not know how the industry evolved. Comic books managed to monopolize comics in America thanks to a very shitty and corrupt distribution system. First by thriving under the limitations placed by the CCA (which wouldn't have been important if it wasn't for the complicity of distributors) and then by setting up such a system that always worked to favor the bigger companies and fuck over the smaller ones. Diamond is a fucking cancer.

The reason why we don't have much different genres is because the two biggest tumors of this market are trying their damn hardest to kill any competition and making sure capeshit lives on. I wish comics would be more diverse in genres, but it's not gonna happen because no one is trying anything new. I wish horror comics would return back to life.

>Horror magazines wouldn't survive under the code.
Yeah those rules were so targeted it was a joke

> No comic magazine shall use the words "horror" or "terror" in its title
>>
>>93554848
>>93555489
Except it's a myth. Horror comics went away somewhat during the late 50's and 60's, but in the 60's Warren Magazines published Creepy, Eerie, and Vampirella which weren't that far off from the EC Comics variety. They bypassed the CCA in the same way as MAD by doing it magazine style rather than in the usual comic format.

And once the code relaxed, DC started doing more horror titles in the 70's.

I know you fuckers want to play up this myth of "boo hoo the CCA stagnated everything" but the only thing preventing people from doing more horror comics is just people themselves. Not the fucking Code. People found ways to bypass the Code as the decades went along.
