Is Laika the modern equivalent of golden age Pixar?
>>
>>93550388
Are they working on anything? They haven't said anything since Kubo was released.
>>
>>93550388
Sure but without the success or awards
>>
>>93550388

they are gret at stopmotion animation

but they suck as writers, and their marketing is also very weak.

we could make a petition, or just ask directly, their boss if they still want to make "kino" or try to make something more approachable.
>>
>>93550388
I've been impressed with all of there movies so far. Wish my idiot kids would scream for these to be constantly played over and over instead of Zootopia and Cars.
>>
>>93550388
No. Not even close. Their 'animation' is subpar, character design is usually horrible and the writing is shit.
>>
>>93550530
>Zootopia

what shit taste.
>>
>>93550388
Laika is too specialized and their subjects too niche to be widely successful. The only people who really appreciate them are animators.
>>
>>93550388

Unannounced project coming in 2018.

They're going to be moving away from kid protagonists for a while, calling Kubo the last of their childhood cycle.

I remember seeing the process behind Coraline and the Box Trolls, extremely impressed.

Dude, have you seen how much lag these movies have? Like, everyone jumps around and stuff, you can totally see the frames, Pixar does animated movies way better.

t. every normie, which is why these movies only just barely make back their budget

they work on some minority pandering feature ordered by their new boss

but yeah, two more sequels after that
>>
>>93550388
they don't make nearly enough money as Pixar does, unfortunately. Not sure how long they're giong to last
>>
>>93552990
They'll last as long as Nike does because the whole studio is basically an insanely rich kid's hobby project.
>>
>>93552990

>Not sure how long they're giong to last

They're bankrolled by the President of Nike because Laika's president and CEO is his son. One of his other sons died young, so people have theorized that he has a vested interest in ensuring that his remaining kids are able to pursue their dreams to the fullest.
>>
They are Ghibli Studio of USA
>>
>>93553347
That would be a good comparison if people gave Laika more praise than the rest of the medium like many do Ghibli. It really deserves some credit for the artistic integrity and overall good movies but it has a pretty cult following unfortunately. They should do more with Tim Burton.
>>
>>93554112
>More
They've never done anything with him, so I think you mean 'They should do something with Tim Burton'.
>>
>>93554145
Shucks, I thought they worked on The Corpse Bride but a quick check shows I'm wrong. They helped minorly to the production of it but Coraline was their first selfmade production. But yeah, Burton and Laika really have good potential as partners.
>>
>>93552700
So is my cell phone, I assume. So are many things.
>>
>>93553145

>>
>>93554263

>>
>>93554564
>Box Trolls
Recently caught it on tv last weekend and enjoyed it like I did when I first saw it. But really I can see where many won't like it. It's kinda boring, I don't think many kids would be all over it. Laika really needs to work on advertising.
>>
>>93554564
Why does everyone hate box trolls so much? I thought it was alright. The only problem I could see with it was that the humor was a little LOL CHEESE LOL RANDUM, but it's a film for kids so that's alright.
>>
>>93554617
Other studios have puppets with articulated faces but Laika is a big fan of 3D printing, they just print a few dozen faces out and swap them as needed. Making the faces in zbrush or whatever before it gets exported to the printer might be somewhat difficult if they're not just weighting and rigging a single model and using that for all the expressions, but at least they only have to do each expression once.
>>
>>93554646
I loved it, though it definitely has it's own charm compared to the other rather gloomy movies

the laika fans on tumblr completely ignore its existence because muh transphobia
>>

Laika just needs to hire better screenwriters and they're golden.

I still like Coraline better than Kubo because even though the animation in Kubo is more impressive the story in Coraline was better.

I feel like Kubo could have benefited from being a bit longer.

I thought the beginning stretch of the movie with him just trying to take care of his borderline catatonic mother was really well done, but once they start the big journey the pacing and character dynamic moved really quickly from set-piece to set-piece. Subtle emotion gave way to comic relief.

I'm not sure in what way you like it, but I really loved it narratively. It will always be stuck in my head as the right way to do a climax.
>>
>>93550419
Nothing officially has been announced beyond that their next film is going to be the first Laika film to not center around a child character. So they are working on SOMETHING, but its not yet known what.
>>
>>93554967
Same here. Especially since the animation shit that Burton does WITHOUT Selick comes up as being subpar at best. Burton really has rode in off Selick's ass as far as his reputation in animation is concerned.
>>
>>93554831
>>93555255
It's not kink, she's just got a child's fascination with the morbid. Give it a few years and then it'll metamorphise into kink, teenage Winnie almost certainly won't be able to orgasm without a rope pulled tight around her neck and a boot driving down into her stomach. I wonder how often Eggs is going to be forced to roleplay a boxtroll dragging her kicking and screaming ass down into rapemurder cave.

Just genuinely good all around. Good animation, emotional voice performances, solid story payoff.

My only nitpick is that I didn't think the father or bully character had much of a redemption arc by the end despite tagging along for the climax.
>>
>>93555255
Teaching Eggs not to bite people will be her new outlet.
>>
I'll wait a while until there's a Laika anniversary edition with all their works for sale. Hope they don't go bankrupt until then.
>>
Holy shit, Kubo was stop motion? Now i feel guilty not seeing it on cinemas.
>>
>>93550388
Quality-wise maybe, but not in terms of cultural impact or financial gain.

Remember, Pixar wasn't just big because they made the first CG film, it's because they made the first CG film AND it was ridiculously popular AND it was nominated for awards AND it was a brand new successful foray into a world that was considered too expensive to work. Laika doesn't have any of this behind it.

Also, this is just a side thing but has any Laika film been #1 in the box office? That alone should be enough to explain why they aren't.

Not even close.

Coraline | #3 | $16,849,640
ParaNorman | #3 | $14,087,050
The Boxtrolls | #3 | $17,275,239
Kubo and the Two Strings | #4 | $12,608,372

This here. It's a shame. Laika's stuff is good and creative but they lack a good of amount of like, fun maybe. Maybe thats the right word. When you market to kids, you gotta be a bit braindead and silly here and there, having a good number of trailer worthy moments to draw in an easy crowd.
