I think the whole idea of shipping in the Korra universe got boring after season 1. Also, everyone just seemed like an annoying piece of shit so I didn't care about anyone being happy.

I think after all the hate the love triangle got in the first two seasons Opal was written to give Bolin a nice straightforward romance without all the drama.

Ironically, the problem with that was that Opal was just generally good-natured and competent in a way that made her development and their dynamic kind of forgettable imo.

If Opal was somehow introduced in earlier books and kept the same arc of going from a shy rich girl to an assertive airbender she would have made a better love interest for Korra imo. She basically got the watered down character growth Asami should've gotten.

No one ever listens or believes me, but I think opal is perfect because of her genetics. Her mom is a child of toph, and I'm pretty sure her dad is a child of Sonja. Baatar just gives off a sokka vibe, produces innovative creative intelligent kids, and Toph berates him often. Opal is essentially the product of Toph x Sokka. Just a generation after.
