Just straight up absurdity. Don't think about it too hard.
>>
>>93530611
I always thought that was a joke on how ridiculous and desperate real estate salesmen are.
>>
That's how Chuck sold his shop to Sneed, learn your history.

What I find most funny is the fact that I don't understand the joke, and the seemingly high amount of absurdity that the joke presents to itself. That's what I find funny about most obscure spongebob jokes, it's because I'm retarded.
>>
I feel like sometimes people forget that absurdity can be funny, without a reason being needed as to why it is that.

It's out of left field, it's unexpected, and because you were expecting something else completely different that it comes as a surprise.

Comedies lately feel like their a bit too obvious when it comes to the punchline. Even when they do something absurd it can be predictable.

Tl;dr surprises are funny
>>
>Ship!
>Spongebob, how long are you gonna stay in your little fantasy world?

I know people say it's a reference to shipping, but I'm not entirely convinced, especially since the episode came out long before I ever heard that term.
>>
>>93532029
damn your right, no way in hell it has anything to do with shipping
>>
>>93532029
Ships are probably extremely foreign to Bikini Bottomites.
>>
>>93532029
>reference to shipping
That's retarded
Shipping culture wasn't even a thing when that episode aired

>expecting preteens to get this
>expecting the average adult to get this
>>

The term has existed since the 90s.
The thing itself goes back at least as far as the 70s when folks wanted Kirk and Spock to make the nasty amd you had to get your fanfiction in the mail.

Is it more than a silly Lautrec reference?
>>
>>93532029
>ships sail on top of the water
>Bikini bottom is under water
>bikini bottom's "sky" is the water's surface

"Ships" are UFOs in this context.
>>
>>93532235
Yeah but to get the joke you have to either
>know who the fuck this 19th century French painter is
or
>have closed captioning on to figure out what he said, go on the early 2000s internet and search for the name
>>
>>93532029
Not to mention it makes no sense even if that were what it is. "Look, up in the sky! A fictional couple!"

>>93532480
>too hot
>too cold
>Too-louse Lautrec
Toulouse Lautrec is a French artist. Don't worry, I had to look it up too.
