For me at least, I was way less willing to just ride the general negative reaction to the character. She's kinda mean for sure (very few people in this strip aren't mean), but Sal treats her like literal garbage, she even called her a cumstain at one point. I think that specific moment was one where a lot of the audience took Sal as being the one out of line. And with how she basically turns away any one who isn't Marcie, it was pretty clear she was just being a misanthrope.

However, Malaya is also really mean to Lucy, who is one of the few characters who is genuinely nice. So who knows. The real answer is probably that as a tertiary character Willis hasn't been able to flesh her out so she sits at a decent place.

Sounds about right. Back in the time of yesteryear, when I was reading Girls With Slingshots, one of the commenters identified with the main character Hazel. Like, a lot. However, Hazel was a... shall we say... less than a model person and in one arc, she picks a fight with a pregnant character's husband. The commenter came out swinging, attacking everyone who said Hazel was rude, abrasive, insulting or well negative at all and basically shit up the entire thread, picking a fight a with literally every other person who didn't like Hazel, because _she_ was just like Hazel and that's how she would have acted and how dare someone commenting on the behaviour of a fictional character not take her feelings into consideration!
