Honestly, I gave up on him after Civil War. Right around then he was trying to recreate mutants by digging up bodies and cloning them, he was going on dates with his evil universe self to try and figure it out... he just wasn't heroic or Hank any more.

It's partly that the writing was retarded and partly that they had this whole story with him - where I genuinely felt for him, it has to be said - plumbing the depths trying to figure out why no more mutants.

But instead of pursuing that, instead of hounding Magneto - since the High Evolutionary, who had repowered Magneto, had already turned Hank down - to become a test subject or just give some fucking samples to try and figure it out... supergenius ends up on Cracker Island building a big, beautiful wall for Scott Summers. The guy whose childhood was so fucked up he thought kicking Hope in the kidneys while she did pushups was training her to be the receptacle of the Jeanix. I mean, island full of horny teens, primo redhead messiah comes along.. all I'm saying is, if your skanky wife doesn't do it for you any more, probably not going to help ease your pussy woes if you're kicking the object of your criminal desires in the ribs and screaming at her.

And that was the guy Hank worked for. Crazy old man Summers. Supergenius Hank McCoy throws away everything - his Avengers life, his friendships with non-mutants, his life in New York, to throw in with his childhood friend during a mid-life crisis, move to Gay City with him, and get fucked in the ass - and then act like he was surprised. Supergenius. Builder of crazy machines, time-travel device, power drainers, you name it.

I don't see a way back. It would be like trying to rehabilitate Dark Beast; at least Juggsy could claim a shitty upbringing. Hank's got no excuse; he's a full-grown man making decisions he should by any standard understand to be bad decisions. Even bringing in Time Travel Shota Hank doesn't really help; the wound is too deep.

Because COMIC BOOKS Hank is now forced to live in somehow regular proximity of Wonder Man.
Wonder Man couldn't care less for the X-Men, so they go back to the Avengers(or end up in the Thunderbolts, if just for variety).

Is it self-loathing mutant hiding behind humor?
Is it Scott's best friend?
Is it Scott's mortal enemy?
Is it the guy who always pulled the asshole move?
Is it the brainiac who never stopped showing off his smarts?
Is it the doctor?
Is it the beast pretending to still be a man?

You can't figure out how to fix him until you figure out who he really is, and the character concept has mutated too much over the years to ever pin down anything.
