Azz's gods were just a more character driven lot, like the Endless in Gaiman's Sandman, or the gods in (again) Gaiman's American Gods.
They were just so fun and exciting. They reminded me of how some of the best Batman or Superman stories are driven by the antagonists and not by the heros themselves.

So how would you rate this run /co/? I'd say it did a good job of resetting Diana back to basics and providing a launchpad for the next writer. Of course if you dislike back to basics then this run isn't going to do much for you. Also the problem is that Shea and Robinson might just ignore all the work Rucka has done although I hope they don't. I liked Cale finally, Cheetah was good, Circe was great, Deimos and Phoebes(?) were kinda shit. We've got fill in writers for the next couple arcs so they better have a gameplan for Diana after Metal. I'd bet Snyder is going to write Diana next.

Sure, except why the fuck would you spend twenty-six issues to do that? That's over two years worth of comics just to do a biased fanfic-ish retcon fest that barely restored anything interesting to the table. It certainly didn't tell a good story. Her origin retold again was a bore. I mean seriously, you could have done this shit in six issues, twelve if you just had to retell her origin. There was so much fluff, poor redesigns and pathetic fan service for his own fans it's actually annoying.

It actually pisses me off people praise this run because it shows how low the bar is with WW these days.

I loved Azz's take on the gods. They had personality. They felt more like the actual Greek gods of old with their bickering. Rucka's gods, oh, I'm sorry, patrons, are so utterly boring and make no sense. Some can be humanoid and some only go around as animals. And the ones who are animals don't even bother to talk they kind of mime things and Diana has to figure them out. What the hell? As we just saw, they could take humanoid shape. Why don't they? Even their human designs are boring. Chiang's designs were so interesting. You could feel that these were powerful beings.

Fuck Rucka and him killing Azz's gods. That was the worst change he could have done.

The Origins arc, which were really obviously made to be her Earth One book, was by itself good(though I find the Legend of Wonder Woman version MUCH superior in basically everything).
Even the Secrets Revealed arc BY ITSELF isn't bad at all... but they are NOT by themselves.

They robbed everything interesting and new Azzarello's run brought without giving back enough. Sure, it re-introduced many characters like they were in his previous run... which haven't existed in new52 so they are basically random people with no background and no reason given to the readers to care about them.
It also killed all the personality the gods had.

Basically the only character actually introduced in this run are Doctor Cyber and Veronica Cale.
It's WAAAAY not enough to make up for annihilating Azarello's run

Diana attempts to return to Themyscira and finds she can't remember the way. She goes to find Cheetah to enlist her help in finding it. Working with Cheetah, Steve and Etta she discovers that the version of Themyscira she's been going to since she first left the island is an illusion created by the gods to keep Ares imprisoned.

Meanwhile in the even-numbered issues her early years are retold, but her origin as the secret daughter of Hippolyta and Zeus is not changed. After she first comes to man's world and defeats Ares, Ares' children, Phobos and Deimos start scheming to get him released from his prison. This involved getting control of Veronica Cale and her company by blackmailing her, stealing her daughter's soul; as well as orchestrating the creation of Cheetah and Dr. Cyber. This lead to Cale creating the organization Godwatch whose goal was to find its way to Themyscira.

Ultimately both Diana and friends and Godwatch make it to the tree that separates the dimensions of Earth and Themyscira. Here it's revealed that Ares actually isn't imprisoned here, he's being hidden, because the love of Aphrodite made him renounce his evil ways but Phobos and Deimos want to kill him and get his powers for themselves.

This is probably the biggest problem with this run. Re-establishing a status quo was the worst path to take after the 52's runs. If anything it should have either built off them or used inspiration from them rather than just retconning the entirety of it as some fever dream just to have things back to the way they were pre-52.

I've gone back and re-read the run and while it's not bad (and much better with the last two issues) it's a drag through the year one bit and cutting the issues together odd & even was a terrible idea. It just kills the whole thing.
