That doesn't make you a fan of Star Wars, it makes you a fan of Star Wars (1977 film). Star Wars is now a big franchise, and when people say "Star Wars", 99% of the time they mean more than just the original movie.

Anyway, that's not even the point. There are lots of "elements of the franchise" that certain people don't like. Some people don't like the cartoons or mobile games, but some don't like the prequels, and some don't like the comics, etc. We get arguments about all of these. So it would have made sense if the image made a general point of "you just need to like the original movie, you don't need to like anything else", like you say it does. However, instead of "anything else" in general, it targets very specific part of the franchise, clearly to bait a certain audience.

We saw it a bit immediately after ANH in Heir to the Jedi & Weapon of a Jedi. He seems to be finally emerging from his funk after his demoralizing defeat by Vader in Star Wars #2.

I won't lie, but this story arc was pretty underwhelming given what they were hyping it up as (gothic horror mixed with SW). The horrendous art in certain issues aside (along with some noticeable inconsistencies in terms of characters' clothing between artists), it never really succeeded in establishing a gothic horror tone, nor was there any suspense given that everyone knows that none of these characters are suffering permanent consequences. Furthermore, the antagonists were forgettable despite their designs. Also, what is the point of Sana's character aside from being strong black bi woman #1138?

All that aside, I actually liked that Luke and Han got some moments in the spotlight. It was especially nice seeing Luke point out the spirit of what it means to be a Jedi and the value of hard work and discipline over the easy way out (both of which tie in nicely with the climax of his character arc in the OT).

Nice. Looking forward to his continued growth. His self doubt himself led him down the road to shortcuts and quick fixes, and that all came to a head here where he finally realized his mistake. Puts his training with Yoda in a new light, having to unlearn what he'd learned in facing the dull and dour realities of Jedi training. He's been focusing inwards for the majority of this run so far and thus been unable to "use" the Force as everyone expects him to, but it'll be Yoda who teaches him to express his inner self out into the larger world, where he'll truly feel the Force and then later learn to control it.

I agree. The horror element falls flat, and the inconsistencies are jarring. Not just in art, but in characterization, I feel. Luke goes from barely tolerating Aphra to declaring her a friend to back, and vice versa, and Sana promises the droids to help kill Aphra, but then it is just forgotten.

Honestly, she has a really impressive a track record. Aphra is the walking definition of a fuck-up. Whenever someone comes up and calls her a Mary Sue, it's painfully obvious that they have never read a comic with her.

Falling INTO the Dark Side, understanding it for what it is, and coming out from the experience wise to its influence and the power it holds while choosing to reject its influence over your being is the lesson that should be taught. You're best prepared to face your enemy through knowing what they themselves faced as well as the how and why they would choose to fall to it.

The mistake of the Jedi was to condemn the Dark Side as this evil, alien "other" while also preaching that they were all susceptible to its influence. It wasn't until the twilight of their time that they came to see the Dark Side was not only looming over them(Dooku), but within them(Sheev). Yoda learned this lesson with respect to himself in his arc. Qui-Gon must have learned it a long time ago, and Obi-Wan learned at some point on Tatooine.

I like the art in issues 3 and 5 the most. It's a bit cartoony, but I like that.

The art in issue 1 is very nice too, Luke is very cute in it, but Aphra doesn't look like Aphra (read: not Asian enough), and upon closer inspection you can see some rather lame parts, such as obvious 3D models, or pic related, where the entire crowd is just the exact same few characters cloned, mirrored and slightly recolored (namely 2 human males, 2 human females, 1 near-human male, 1 Rodian and 1 protocol droid, each of them appearing at least 2-3 times).

But both are miles better than Larroca's hideous tracing in issues 2 and 4, of course. It used to be more tolerable in the Darth Vader run, but now, when they're applying detailed shading to faces, it's just painful to look at.

Battlefront loot crates seem to be even more shitty than loot crates in other full priced games. Each upgrade has all rarity levels, and each level is flat out better than the previous one. What? Have you actually READ any canon books? I don't know how you could possibly have come to such a silly conclusion.

If you haven't, you should start with another Luceno book no less, Catalyst. It completely builds of and intersects with the relevant factors of the era, namely The Clone Wars, and of course leading into Rogue One nicely. Tarkin is another great example too. Generally I think it's just a very Luceno thing, to span so closely out of surrounding media, not so much an EU thing.

Canon being "casual" is nonsense, the kind of shit I expect on "Save the EU" facebook pages.

There's also Lost Stars which is extremely similar to Plagueis's continuity boner, in that there are plenty moments in the book that is "teehee, just off-screen of ANH/ESB/ROTJ" because it's spanning out of the OT so closely.

The principle is the same; You were suggesting that rather than have OT movies, we should be getting a movie about an ancient Sith most people have never heard of, alongside the other completely new Era of movies.

While Lucasfilm has a pretty good amount of creative freedom, they also need to make sure that what they're making is also what audiences want. They could satisfy all the Bane fans by giving him some comics and books, while satisfying the entire fanbase by doing a movie like Rogue One.

The idea that throwing audiences into a movie set thousands of years before TPM is something that most people want is absurd. Most hardcore fans don't even want that, it's just a vocal minority that want to branch out into ancient stuff so soon.

I told this story a while back, but it feels like worth recounting. Picture it. 2004 or 5-ish, Lucasfilm. I'm working in the online group. And we started dabbling with original EU storytelling. Babysteps at first. Short stories. Web comics. Things like that. And then one day, my boss Paul Ens (@paulens) throws out the idea of rebooting the EU. Not that he had the authority to do so. Just talk. And I HATED the idea. I thought, NO! YOU CAN'T DO THAT. NOT AFTER I HAD INVESTED SO MUCH TIME AND EFFORT INTO IT. But then 24 hours later, I loved the idea because, in a weird way, it was an act of preservation. Of conservation. Not elimination.

Now, I by no means expect my POV to sway anyone's thoughts about this subject. But here was my take. I realized that the EU and the connections it built were a fragile house of cards. And the way it was structured in relation to production. That if this didn't happen, it would continue to get spackled over until it became unidentifiable. Like the original backstory of Mon Calamari. I kept thinking of that. About how it was disappeared from EU history. And despite people's claims of a cohesive setting, I kept thinking about the shame of Seggor Tels. The Imperial discovery of the planet. And how that history was disappeared for the sake of getting some Quarren masks into Episode I.

So those poor fish headed bastards changed my mind. Because by not being clear about how the storytelling universes intersect, we ended up with a history where that even never happened in any universe, rather than that event only happened in one universe. So in that way, a clean slate would preserve the old universe in amber. Letting it go unmolested into the future.

Of course, back then this was just conversation between two guys, two fans, who had no sway in deciding such things. Just talk.

And it turns out, the Mon Calamari this time was huge swaths of the EU. There was no Jacen. No Jaina. No new Jedi Order. Chewie lived. Not terribly surprising, but there it was. When the announcement went out regarding the new movies, and the Disney acquisition, I wrote a blog post about it. I also wrote a blog post about what it meant for the EU, but that didn't get published, because wiser minds felt that with the absence of a new plan in place, describing what the future would look like for publishing, it would be premature to go into it. And it was the right call. Because when the EU announcement did go out, there were new titles in development that could be cited.

Well, they've been good bosses in that they trust Lucasfilm to be stewards of Star Wars. I don't foresee that changing. Also, a key difference is character-led comic titles tend to have to reboot, because individuals histories get so convoluted. Star Wars has the luxury of not having all that narrative weight on a single character with a mortal lifespan.

He's so right. The EU was collapsing under the weight of all the retcons and inconsistencies, even without TCW and the prequels stepping onto its shoes. I loved the EU (well, mostly), but all the contradictions and "spackling over" annoyed the hell out of me. I've read all three books several times. I just don't care for them. The trilogy got worse with each book, and the content left a lot to be desired. I think a Bane trilogy could be done well, I just don't think Karpyshyn's trilogy was good

All her love interests went nowhere, she was beaten, and kidnapped, and saw the horrors of war, her life was shattered when she was framed for murder and narrowly escaped execution at 16, then everyone she knew was killed and she was forced to stay in hiding for over a decade.

Then she tries to join the Rebellion, only to end up being stalked by the biggest threat in the Galaxy, who then turns out to be her long-lost brother-figure who tries (and possibly succeeds) to kill her.

Then last we saw her, she is maybe-dead, maybe-alive having a spooky experience in the "underworld".
