I've recently started back reading, and I wonder if the reason why Bastion thought Duane was initially a failure was because he worked on Duane during the night. If his soul travels to the khert now, it probably did then, and the disappearance of it may have made Bastion think it left entirely. Hm.

I wonder what would happen if they had some form of life support to use. Can their bodies live without a soul inside? And if they did all that, would Duane have managed to return, at dawn, to a living body?

I don't think it's too significant, but it is pretty clearly meant to set a tone. We get the first time in the current story where Bastion get's pretty badly fucked and he's trying to play it off despite it obviously getting to him pretty badly. Then we transition to a violent storm that's given the implication of even dark tidings ahead. The overall mood is meant to be pretty dour and melancholy. And it allows Bastion's totally-not-offsetting to meld into the gutters.

Speaking of offsetting, I'm reminded Murkoff also displayed it and what this means for both his and Bastion's close relationships with titty-bird. And since we're now discussing the Black Tongues being a kind of surrogate lover(s) for her, and now them maybe getting discarded for Duane, I wonder if Murkoff was their predecessor? Maybe he was like a kind of historical Artorius versus mythical King Arthur, but for Ssael. Instead of sounding the khert for freedom and godslaying, he did it to get laid and then the gods made him mad for his sin of pride. So Ilganyag got her lover with her in the khert, but now he's an insane, vicious animal so she tried to escape but now she no longer can. Or hell, maybe she got Murkoff into the khert in the first place and the gods trapped them both there.
