Did the Image founders fuck it up for other comic artists in America?

Nowadays, you never, ever see an artist's name out in front for a comic book. I can't help but think that part of that is because, when the top name superstar comics artists of the 80s/90s decided to do their own thing, to rebel against the corporate-owned publisher-dictated format of comics...

One made a toy company
One got married to a character who never made it above D-List
SEVERAL went back to doing work for hire for the big two
And one actually sold all the shit he created/ helped create on his own... to DC

You have a few of them who are actually in the nuts and bolts of the publisher as it exists today, but even then... look at the big Image books. People care about Saga because the Lost guy's name is on it. Robert Kirkman is the face of Walking Dead, not Charlie Adlard (or Tony Moore)

Will we ever see a comics artist who bucks this trend again? One who runs the show instead of being simply seen as the pictures guy? Is Mike Mignola doomed to be the last of his kind?

Really underplaying how much influence Jim Lee has at DC there. And did you miss DC's Dark Matter imprint being literally this?
>>
The writer's name goes first because that's common sense, it's the first part of the creative process behind making a comic. Then it's drawn, inked, colored and finally printed (the editor is supposed to watch over this whole process).

>People care about Saga because the Lost guy's name is on it
That's because Staples didn't have much rep before Saga. And people do care about her, or have you missed all the coverage that refers to the comic as "Vaughan and Staples' Saga"?
>Robert Kirkman is the face of Walking Dead, not Charlie Adlard (or Tony Moore)
Because Adlard didn't create it and Moore left pretty early on.

You'd think so, but many comics around the time were artist driven. Jim Lee's Psylocke, Liefeld and Cable, etc. Of course, that has gone out of fashion as artists are switched every five issues on modern books.

>SEVERAL went back to doing work for hire for the big two

All of them did except Todd and Jim. Jim pretty much retreated from making comics and became the guy who brought new talent in to make up for losing all of Liefeld and Lee's various books when they left the publisher.

Everything form Chew to the Walking Dead was because of him, he really planted the seeds for Image's big revival

I'm surprised there aren't more comics where the writer and artist are one in the same like most of the popular Japanese manga. I guess they all stick to webcomics nowadays.

Yes, and what did the artists do when coming up with these stories? They wrote them. I'm pretty sure I've seen books where the artist co-writes with a scripter having the artist/writer listed first, like Samnee's Black Widow.

I don't mean simply in terms of masthead order, I means in terms of who gets the spotlight in promotional materials

A book will be promoted because as the new Bendis/Aaron/Snyder/Morrison/Johns thing VS the new Kubert/McNiven/Janin/Immonen/Hitch thing. And while part of that is because writers tend to be a bigger factor in the consistency of how good books are for big corporate comics, I can't help but wonder if artists, even on the indie side, are being reduced to second bananas to the creative geniuses that wanna be the next Alan Moore or whatever
>>

You don't see screenwriter's names coming up before a director, it's a visual medium and outside of a Alan Moore or Grant Morrison type writers don't seem to bother laying out a visual story, it's all up to the artist to translate a script into a different medium.

A major part of why Stan Lee got so much of the credit was that the people interviewing him didn't understand the creative process. They believed he was the auteur and that the artist just brought his vision to the page

>the creative geniuses that wanna be the next Alan Moore
You give them way to much credit, I don't think any of them are nearly that ambitious, otherwise they wouldn't produce trite.

The thing is, artists like the Image folks got popular by doing what was at the time a pretty new and original style with all the crosshatching, huge panels, spreads, etc. And then in the Vertigo books you had all kinds of crazy art. It was really pushing what you could do with mass-printed art at the time.

In the 80's most artists weren't big names because there was a house style. In the 2000's things went back to that. And so people latched onto writer names more. Art in comics these days are rushed more often than not, so more and more you have the art just be serving the writing.

And also just art not being as impressive to people now that you can see millions of great drawings on the internet.

Image is shit anyway.
