When I was in high school, I though Daria and the show were great. I (probably egocentrically) identified with Daria, who was basically the only sensible person in her school, because that is how I felt.
I have been out of high school for years and have become a more positive person and less inclined to sarcasm. Now I can barely stand her smarmy condescension. I think enjoyment of the show is best for a person in a certain age range with a specific personality.

This. I feel like Daria, as a character, is best enjoyed for her snark, rather than her actions or views. She had some good development, but on a whole, she could be annoying and preachy.

Daria has no philosophy. She's deeply insecure and that's all it boils down to, she doesn't want to be judged the way she knows she judges others, so she claims to not care to hide the fact that she cares deeply.

Jane is too lazy to give a shit about being a normie, but she's not that concerned with how others live their lives. I think Jane could see why someone could want popularity or why they'd go against it.

Daria reminds me of every other teenager who reflexively says "FUCK IT, I DON'T CARE" when confronted on something that makes them feel foolish or embarrassed. They think it's showing people that they're too unbothered to even be upset, but it's so the opposite.

The phrase does carry some negative connotation, but the meaning is still relative; you could expect a show to be okay and it turns out excellent. That said, Daria was a spinoff from Beavis and Butthead about a very different character, the show itself being less of a crude comedy and more a teenage girl slice of life. I love the show, but maybe OP was expecting something bad.

And you're completely right. Brittany, Jane, Daria, and Quinn all deserve better. I don't even want to think of this as canon. Quinn's final arc at the end of the show finished with her learning to take education seriously and not to be so shallow, but still be happy and social, a balance Daria never quite got. But then this is Quinn's fate? I find her ending to be especially sad.
