I swear I've been seeing trailers for this movie going all the way back to Rock Dog and Lego Batman in February. One was still there during Cars 3 a week ago. They've been promoting this pretty hard for something that is such a niche movie.

I've noticed the theatrical trailers really play up the inventor boy and focus less on the dancing, as they don't want to alienate boys. They will. It's a decidedly girly movie.
>>
>>93492642
You did. There wasn't a particularly strong push for this movie, it just had a staggered release and you were seeing promotions of it from different territories.

Why is Peter Cushing feeling up that loli?

This is a good movie held back from greatness by not focusing on the dancing and the rivalry and camaraderie of the dancers.

On the surface it's a girls film, but it pushes a message of passion and hard work that should resonate with anyone, and is also somewhat antithetical to the spate of shallow, feel good, you-are-special movies that pass for empowerment.

Somewhat concerned over the changes Weinstein might make to this movie, but would watch again nonetheless.

It is. But apparently they renamed it to Ballerina.

It was more the Peter Cushing part I was questioning than the feeling up lolis part. That's perfectly understandable.

Still, thanks Anon, I didn't know the artist and now I do. God bless pixiv.

Apart from the compeling main plot about the girl learning to be a ballet dancer there is also a not so compeling subplot about her chilhood friend wanting to be an inventor

Devil's Advocate, this poster is more interesting than >>93492612

Even "Leap!" is more interesting than "Ballerina" and they're just single word titles.

But the first poster is misleading considering what the actual focus of the film is on.
>>
>>93497760
Well it depends who you're aiming for. OP is for American audiences, >>93492612 for French. I guess in France they were going more for young girls, to whom the Ballerina title and imagery is probably more appealing. To me, Leap! doesn't say much about the movie, I think they might be shooting themselves in the foot trying to broaden the appeal by forgetting who it's actually likely to appeal to.

Watch the original non-American version titled "Ballerina." It's exactly the same except the guy is voiced by Dane Dehaan instead of Nat Wolff and there isn't Mel Brooks or Kate McKinnon. For some reason the studio felt the need to dub Dehaan and a few other characters for the American version. That said, it was very good. Would recommend.
>>
>>93497887
Poor Dane DeHaan. Why dub him out?

>>93497929
Just looked it up. What the hell? If the original version was Canadian and the new one is American, why replace one of the American actors?
>>
>>93497887
Wait, did they really dub over an an english language movie with different english speaking VAs just to release it in a different region? FUCKING WHY!?!?!?! I know that contracts and licensing and shit can get tricky when you are going to an international market, but this adds literally nothing to the appeal of the movie. I will admit Mel Brooks is always a win, but kids don't know who he is, so it's not a major draw for a kids movie
>>
>>93498334
Yes. They dubbed Wolff over DeHaan and Brooks and McKinnon over some minor characters.
>>
No matter how much people complain about countries like Canada that restricts the amount of foreign media that gets shown, Americanizing foreign media in the US is way worse.
>>
>>93492857
The character designs here look just like how Shadman draws girls
>>
>>93499907
It's not even Americanizing it though. Dane DeHaan is from Pennsylvania.
>>
>>93496335
It was based on a book called "The Leaf Men" and that was also the original title.

Was in development hell at Blue Sky for so long that they almost let the contract expire but immediately decided to get off their butts when John Lasseter was making offers to author William Joyce to just bring the Leaf Men project over to Pixar

My main problem with the movie is the voice cast for the main girl and boy. They are terrible they didn't sound like children at all. It was fairly hard for me to watch

>>
>>93504784
The Little Prince has the better writing and is emotionally rich, but Ballerina is the more entertaining and engaging film purely on the strength of its visuals, the novelty of the setting, and the dancing. It's kung fu with ballet shoes, an underdog sports story made for girls that is as shallow yet genuine, as cheesy yet uplifting, as a Carly Rae anthem.
>>
>>93491944
I'm looking forward to watching this, it looks pretty good, desu.
It's definitely going to be better than Rock Dog and Spark but it most likely won't be on the same level as Your Name. or The Red Turtle, in terms of foreign animated films.

My girlfriend also loves these kind of films so we would probably go on a movie date together watching this movie.

Nice theme song too, but I'm not sure if it will be nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars, let alone win it since it wasn't composed for this movie.
I Don't Wanna Live Forever from Fifty Shades Darker will most likely be the winner, though, unless we get another highly-acclaimed musical like with La La Land last year.

I think there was some football movie from Argentina called Metegol (released as Underdogs in North America) had an American dub which had Ariana Grande voice the female lead character and a British dub where Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter movies) voiced the main protagonist.
For some weird reason, they didn't release the original Spanish version with English subtitles anywhere.

Also, the Studio Ghibli film Arrietty had two different English dubs: a British dub by StudioCanal and an American dub by Disney.
The StudioCanal dub had Saorise Ronan voice Arrietty while the Disney dub had Bridgit Mendler voice Arrietty.
They also released the original Japanese version with English subtitles in both countries.
And Madman Entertainment (the Australian distributor) released a Special Edition Blu-ray which had both Disney and StudioCanal dubs, in addition to the original Japanese version with English subtitles, Studio Ghibli also did the same when they released an International Version Blu-ray in Japan which had both Disney and StudioCanal dubs, as well as the original Japanese version.
Weirdly enough, the International Version Blu-ray didn't have English subtitles for the
original Japanese version, even if Studio Ghibli usually releases their Blu-rays and DVDs with English subtitles, even in the Japanese releases.
Pic related is the International Version Blu-ray which was released in Japan.

Hopefully, this bullshit won't happen again with Mary and the Witch's Flower.

It was released under the title of Ballerina in the UK, Canada and most other countries.
They delayed the US release, redubbed some of the voices and retitled it into Leap!.
>>
>>93504895
The original distributor dropped it and it ended up on Netflix in the US.

I like how they briefly show the prima ballerina caring for the girls that get eleminated and apprently being an overall nice person. Makes the pay-off in the movie a lot better although it all feels like it's just the beginning of a story.
