Carol was honestly much more compelling as a character when she was a total trainwreck. I mean, alcoholic, violent, fascistic tendencies--she was kind of the whole package, and it was great.

Same goes for Tony as well. When he was a control freak who struggled with alcoholism and childhood trauma, while having a massive case of "I can't trust anyone" who was obsessed with being THE top dog, he was much more interesting. He was the ultimate Alpha and the worst trainwreck at the same time. And that was what made him compelling.
