Obscure characters that you like

Fantastic design, plus the duel-wielded golden guns is cool as fuck.
Spanner's cool
This dude was going to have an ongoing in the 90s drawn by prime John Romita Jr., but it was cancelled before it ever came out. No idea why.
He only ever had a few appearances that I'm aware of and was mostly a Punisher supporting character.
>>93478397
Can't make em like her anymore.
Literally one of DC's best characters.
>>93477790
E-Man. For those of you who know the character, brand new stories by Nicola Cuti and Joe Staton will be published in the Charlton Arrow this September.

Those original Ann Nocenti penned Typhoid Mary comics are so fucking awesome. Talk about an instantly compelling character. Very similar to Elektra in that only her original creator could handle her but she got pushed to the side because how many psycho ex gfs does Matt need?

Yep. And Hans is just one of those characters that seems to get the best out of anyone who writes/draws him.

Because Doom himself was busy that day.
>>93478715
how in the fuck does that look anything like doctor doom?
>>93479562
That line is from a Bendis book.
>>93479635
Between Bendis and Fraction Madame Masque has basically been completely ruined.
>>93479696
Just say that every appearance of Madame Masque since Bendis has been more of her Bio-Duplicates
>>93479756
I can accept that. We'll know for sure if she tries to join the Avengers.
>>93479756
So like Doombots, but weaker and can't beat Iron Man in a fight?
>>93479635
bendis is the worst writer ever ffs
>>93479799
When has a Doombot ever won?
>>93479013
I think half her problem is her design isn't very appealing.
I like most of DC's B and C-Listers
But few people would say they're a fan of the Atom or Plastic Man
>>93480180
Doombots win all the time, they just don't get confirmed as one because they weren't acting OOC for Dr. Doom
>>93480180
One conquered the world and eventually became the benevolent dictator Doom pretends he would be.
Of course, this is just an alternate future. It was Doombot that was briefly an Avenger.
>>93479799
They should give Madame Masque upgrades so that she actually can beat Iron Man in a fight
>>93480299
Bendis made her magic
>Madame Masque
>obscure
She's one of the go-to villains for street levels and was pretty involved with Iron Man for a good while. She's one of Kate Bishop's big villains right now.
>>93480337
I meant good upgrades. And ideally with good writing
I can't for the life of me understand why no one's tried to bring him back.
>>93480360
She, along with Spymaster, don't need to be able to go toe-to-toe with Iron Man in a fight as they represent a different kind of threat. They're indirect, soft power.
>>93480370
Is that Kelly's JLA run? I think all people remember from that is Plas vs. J'onn and Wonderbats shipping.
Which is a shame, because I really remember enjoying it.

>>93480673
Crow was one of my favorite parts of that series and the ancient league was filled with so many characters I would love to see again. Especially Aztec Iron man and Hebrew Martian Manhunter.
>>93478635
>>93478651
Could a modern day Iranian Enemy Ace work?
>>93479052
Similar powers, but I liked Argent from Jurgens' Teen Titans, who I think was the only character to appear after it ended (except that guy who Johns kept having Superboy-Prime rip arms off).
>>93477790
Nightshade. She is the cutest.
>>93479052
How did they mess up such a nice design?
Thunderstrike for me.
Starfire's brother
>>93481578
Who's that? Looks interesting
Detroit Steel.
Such an intentionally hack concept has to find a place in the 616 universe beyond being a one-off villain for Iron-Man.
Seriously, why wouldn't every evil corporation and third-world banana republic have one of these officially licensed Iron-Man knock-offs in their garage?
It's a brilliant idea. And all indirectly Tony Stark's fault.
I miss this big green semi-autistic motherfucker.
>>93481612
That's the problem with a lot of Iron Man's corporate and powered armor villains, they should be making money hand over fist by actually selling armor to various buyers.
>>93481612
>Detroit Steel isn't listed as being from Detroit
???
>>93480673
Yeah, Manitou Raven from The Obsidian Age. Him and Morrison are who I think of when it comes to The Justice League. They did awesome jobs building the relationship between the characters and giving them threats on an epic scale.
>>93481553
He looks like his superpower is roofies.
>>93481711
I just extra-love the fact that it's Tony Stark having still contributed to the world of arms manufacturing and making the world a more dangerous place just by the fact that he tried to become a superhero instead of inventing the next murder-machine that would have earned him more blood-money.
He can't even reform his evil ways without being a bastard.
... Jeezus, come to think of it, he can't even fall into a coma without his A.I, threatening the world either...
... what an epic bastard.
Another character that feels like they spent a lot of time building him up, only to never branch outside of the book he was introduced in.
Catman is my favorite DC character not named Black Manta. He was awesome in Secret Six and I even liked him in the New 52 series even if it didn't reach the heights of the first. I kind of liked that it was weird and different. I like his redemptive/transformational arc in the first series. I'm genuinely worried it's going to be a long time before anyone uses him again which is a shame as he'd go really well on a team book.
>>93481940
Fuck that's not Catman... Kaboomerang is really cool too though. I hope Kirkman doesn't kill him off.
>>93481940
>>93481948
I thought that might be some sort of Australian Catman who was adopted by dingos instead of lions.
>>93481964
Sounds like a potential future obscure favorite cape character to me!
>>93481827
People liked Iron Man because of such things. He's the "damned if you, damned if you don't" character. Someone like Spider-Man fights regular crooks. Captain America fights terrorists. Those guys would exist either way. But Iron Man? Many of his villains are knee-jerk reactions to him BEING Iron Man. Corporate Espionage & Internal Boardroom Politics used to play a role in IM comics. But that was a long time ago...
Also, have a Controller.
Question:
Is it better or worse when they shoehorn the B-listers into the spotlight for one great story or one great run and then they go back into the void from whence they came?
I always feel worse when the characters have that moment to shine and I know that's all I'm ever going to get.
>>93481743
That's part of the villainy.
>>93482053
I've been reading comics for decades and I've still never seen the Controller use his powers, I've seen him in comics, just never once seen him use any superpowers.
>>93482098
I know that feeling.
But what a moment that is.
>>93481770

>>93478715

>>93482098
I tend to leans towards it being better. They may never get another story to themselves, but at least they have one good thing to their names. Something you can point to whenever the character comes up. That's more than a lot of C-Z list characters get in their histories.
>>93482165
>I've been reading comics for decades and I've still never seen the Controller use his powers, I've seen him in comics, just never once seen him use any superpowers.
The last time I remember him actually using his mind control tech was way way back in Busiek's Iron Man run where he was a big bad for one arc. After that Bendis just had him run around as a generic muscleman, which is how Bendis default writes any supervillain.
As previously mentioned, Bendis and Fraction also had no clue what Madame Masque was like.
>>93482165
He mindraped Monica Rambeau once to make her fight Genis and sloppily make out with himself
>>93483687

I like how most of these guys look like they came straight out of the CoX character creator.I miss that game.
>>93486189
Read any of the /who/ related comics? DWM, Titan, IDW, whatever?
>>93486255
I've read some of DWM's Fivie (I specifically remember the story about Five encountering a Viatnemese soldier, as well as the tale of Sir Justin), and have read the Flood. I should read more of them.
I really liked Eleven's Titan comics. Ten's Titan comics aren't quite as good, though they are very comfy.
I also read a few of the older comics. Like the story with the First Doctor, John, and Gillan where time goes backwards; or the one where Four and Sarah meet a Time Lord who is trapped in a bottle like a Genie.
>>93486315
I've not read much DWM but I agree on Titan - 11 Titan comics are absolutely great. Ten only really stood out in the angel arc. I also liked 8's miniseries.
>>93486356
I should read Eight's miniseries. Was his companion good? (She was qt with the blue hair.)
The Eleven comics are the ones that keep to the themes of the actual TV series. The Vol 2, with three-companion crew, ranks right up there with the actual TV eps in terms of Eleven's development. And I like how Alice, being older than the usual 20 somethings, can call 11 out more.
I liked Dorothy from Ten's run. And the latest issues seem to be adding more depth to the companions, which is nice.
>>93486428
Honest I've skimmed through 10's comics - They just seem so dull to me, so I don't know that much about Dorothy other than the age thing. I liked Cindy, though.
It might just be me but I found Josie interesting. A more intriguing artist companion than Gabby from 10's comic, I find. She's also a bit more than your average 20 something girl but at the same time not the most important person in the world ala Clara or Rose.
I like how there are loose themes from the show in 11's run like River and now the new Silents spinoff guys. All of 11's Titan companions have been interesting.
>>93486521
>>93486521
The young Master in Eleven's comics is the best.
Speaking of art, there's a general theme of "art and music as power" in Ten's comic that's nice. Also, the "everyone has amnesia in a dark corrupted world" part of Ten's comic was the best.
I'll check out Eight's comic stuff.

To this day, Prime remains one of my all-time favorite heroes, and one of favorite Superman pastiches. (yeah I know he's more Captain Marvel by way of Hulk, but he fills the Superman role in his world.)
I love his look, that he's a big hulking guy that wears a cape.
He's definitely a product of the Extreme Era, but much like Supreme, I think he has a great core concept that can, and did, lend itself well to great stories.
Most of all, I love that he had a complete arc, going from a child playing hero and fucking it up, to a rebellious teen lashing out at the world, to finally getting his act together and choosing for himself to be a proper hero.
The fact that his powers can manifest in different ways depending on his mindset makes things even more interesting.
I really wish it were possible for the character to be used in publication again, but I know its not gonna happen.

>>93495301
She was recently in Captain America, but I heard /co/ grumbling about the portrayal.
Wikipedia says that:
>Their meeting is interrupted by Cottonmouth, Black Racer, and Copperhead. During the ensuing battle, Black Racer stabs Diamondback in the gut. After Captain America defeats the three villains, he rushed to Diamondback's aid. Diamondback immediately betrays Captain America, revealing herself to be a member of the Serpent Society once again, and Captain America is taken prisoner and brought to the Serpent Society's lair.[33] This leads to a confrontation between the Society and Captain America, Joaquin Torres, Misty Knight, and Demolition Man, during which Diamondback turns against Viper and helps the heroes defeat the Society.
>>93481283
The media will probably get on it for presenting Iranian air force for being positive or something.

American eagle is a really cool guy. Shame no one remembers him outside of the guy writing Occupy Avengers (Fucking Red Wolf, I like you and all but you aren't American Eagle). You'd figure as a minority who's an activist and a biker, he'd be everywhere now a days, but nope. No where to be found. He's obscure enough that you can do anything with him and his costume could use a slight update sometime. He could be Sam Wilson's USAgent counterpart
Anima
Her book wasn't Hitman quality but for something that came from Bloodlines it wasn't bad and probably would've done better as a Vertigo title. I'm honestly surprised it hasn't been revived as part of Young Animal yet. Plus Courtney as a qt Riot Grrrl type is leagues better than that weird ultra-feminine sparkly bimbo look they were going for with Titans East/when they killed her off.
>>93496883
You can make that argument about a few of the injuns in comics, but it's not really a commendable argument in itself.

It's really because Marvel's been on this "Iron Man himself is a villain because lol capitalism bad" kick ever since the Extremis arc. And of course since /co/ doesn't read comics they haven't read anything older than that, so they don't know Tony's villains exist, or have only seen them written terribly by Bendis or Fraction or some other shitshow of a writer.

So lets make a list what each villain represnt best:
Iron Monger - Unhinged Capitalism
Controller - Totalist Transhumanism
Mandarin - Legalist Autocratism
Ghost - Moralist Anarchism
Titanium Man - Old-Communism
Firebrand - Revolutionary Socialism

>The thing is Stark should be the champion of capitalism. The bad, the good and the ugly side of it.
That's what I've been saying, but apparently everybody dissagrees. They all think Tony's been a liberal since the 70s, and that he should be even more left-leaning.
And to that I say... what's the point? What's the point of yet another liberal hero? The intrigue of Stark is that he's a futurist, yes, he wants to create the future. But he wants HIMSELF to create the future. He thinks he's the only one wrthy. He wants the Iron Man to be the cutting-edge tech. He doesn't want anybody to have it, use it, or surpass it.
It's this dichotomy in his philosophies that makes him complex and multi-faceted. He believes in the system of capitalism, good and bad. He believs in the individuality of nations.
But with the way things are going, they're turning him into a less drastic Flag-Smasher with the personality of Steve Jobs and giving no clue as to how he's running his company, or how he makes the bllions he needs if he's a "bleeding heart" now.
It's just weird that people can't accept that you can both believe in the free market and be a good guy. He probably pays extremely well. He's fair. He tries to create tech that protects the environment. And so on and so forth. His "power" is money, and his "responsibillity" is using it wisely and not being overtaken by greed.
>>93512125

I've read a lot of Iron Man stuff recently, and I feel fairly confident to say that while it's good to have him still be a somewhat political character, it shouldn't totally box him in. The problem of the last decade or so is that they've made Tony way too involved into the Big Picture stuff to the point where he didn't have any interesting fights anymore. Oh sure, it's fine to praise whatever role he may have had as a Futurist in some big years-only push, but he also needs to face challenges. It's a superhero comic book, it's built around people punching each other. This is also a side effect of the increasing amounts of padding in Marvel comics (IE decompression).
For that part I think that Stark is also interesting when he's interacting with villains who represent aberrations or paths of science which he would find morally questionable. Firepower, for example, represents science as fully controlled by the government and fully militarized. He's essentially the prototype War Machine (In the WM phase where he worked for the government). Or take the original Blizzard, whose crime career was funded on his belief that cryogenics would allow us eternal life, but lacked the funds to realize his dream because of (what he perceived as) corporate stonewalling.
Naturally you can always drag magic in there, since Tony traditionally hates it and it can form an antithesis to his science, but I think that part shouldn't be overdone too much or it becomes a Superman/magic type situation.
>>93488314

Regulated markets collapse all the time as well, it's an intrinsic feature of markets, the self-correcting mechanism. An overly, or dysfunctionally, regulated market can often collapse in worse ways than an under-regulated one due to the regulations creating artificial conditions and market distortions.
>>93515809
The real issue is that his enemies always come down to "lets kill Tony Stark" when they don't have a reason to do so. Using Firepower as an example, there really isn't a reason why you'd see him as a villain, as the suit itself is nothing but a product to be sold and the pilot has no stake in Tony's game.

I'm not disputing the problems of managed economies, but your willingness to be Rousseau's "great princess" is astonishing.
People can't just eat cake because you stop the state intervening. Even Adam Smith was big on that; states should tax and intervene in the lives of the poor, as well as provide for their own defense and stability - otherwise they'll be carved up by princelings into dysfunctional baronies in the pursuit of personal power. This, too, has been adequately demonstrated to be A Very Bad Thing economically, and if greed went away, someone should probably tell Tony Stark that, because he does seem to run into some awful greedy people.
>>93517052
We're only discussing the basis on which we'd like to see a prominent fictional businessman written; it's like saying we should go to /k/ to talk about what guns the Punisher should use or to /mlp/ to talk about the X-Men, who are fucking faggots and need to be put in containment.
The argument anon is making is that Stark is a Reagan-era free marketeer; the argument I'm making is that he's a pre-Reagan pro-regulation kind of guy, what with putting solar on everything (Reagan ripped it down from the White House roof precisely because it was progress) and making us all suck his dick and REGISTER!
Fuckin' Tony, that crazy guy. Yeah he changed his mind after his brain rebooted, but you know what? That kind of suggests he's a trust fund babbie who just happens to be an engineering genius, and that all the money/businessman shit is kind of incidental to his core concept.

>>93519498
All things considered, Stark more than likely operates like all businessmen. Regulations are great when they benefit him and terrible when they impede him. It's why Tony's business enemies always turn out to be ruthless criminals and try to kill Stark, him being opposed by normal business competitors would quickly show that Tony's preferred form of regulation is to physically destroy the assets of his competitors. Tony's monopoly of technology hinges entirely on personal use of force. So what if Tony doesn't share his tech? Logically there should be multiple companies putting out powered armor, albeit shittier powered armor, for a fraction of what an Iron Man suit costs. Why buy a single billion dollar weapon that can defeat an army single-handed when you can buy 20 fifty-million dollar weapons that will wreck 75% of whatever it comes across?

>>93518018
>The real issue is that his enemies always come down to "lets kill Tony Stark" when they don't have a reason to do so.
It's kind of a weird situation which has persisted since the beginning. Iron Man was one of the 60s Marvel heroes who constantly, CONSTANTLY had villains specifically go after him, or even create themselves to attack him. The only other Marvel heroes of the period who had that situation were Dr Strange (Where his position as future master mage made him a target) and sometimes the Hulk (Because people wanted to control or destroy him). Spidey, the FF, Cap, Ant/Giant-Man and Thor all tended to just stumble on villains, or seek villains out to defeat them.
I guess the difference is Tony's in-universe fame.

That only explains a handful of them. You could probably revamp a few of them to make it more nuanced, like Titanium Man.
>>93520528
If you look at his silver age strips there's an outrageous amount of supervillains out for revenge against either Tony Stark or Iron Man (since they didn't know they were the same). Crimson Dynamo was created to upstage him. Titanium Man was created to upstage him. Jack Frost/Blizzard wanted revenge for being fired by Stark. Melter was a business rival of Stark's who lost his contracts. Count Nefaria wanted revenge and/or to control Stark's assets. Mandarin wanted to destroy Iron man to prove his power. Black Widow wanted to seduce Stark to send his secrets to the Russians. And so on. It really is amusing how often Stan re-used that plot (either by himself or through other writers).
>>93512115

The problem with the Batman, Inc. characters is that they really don't have anything to go on. Most of them have a single villain that popped up during Morrison's run, and IIRC a couple of them died during that run, and Morrison making them increasingly adhere to Batman's iconography as the run went on left many of them looking like shitty knock offs or Project Rooftop redesigns. The fact that they're all from foreign nations means that you'd also need writers who are willing to do the research needed for proper verisimilitude.
Basically you'd need a writer who really gives a shit and is willing to put in more work that usual. A good redesign would also be for the best.

Bit of trivia. The writer of that Slyde story wrote Minions and Secret Life of Pets.

Isn't the current Darkstar the original Darkstar pulling a walk-in on her successor's body?
>>93545410
Kind of, the body the first Darkstar is using is actually the third one's. The second one, the redhead, just died.
I just hate how he hasn't had anything good after the 90s. The recent run was abysmal.
>>93545436
I love the fact that everyone in the Winter Guard except Ursa Major has been killed or replaced multiple times. Three Darkstars, 13 Crimson Dynamos, and seven Red Guardians.
Can't find a good colour picture, but Oasis (the one on the left).

Herc is bi in the comics.
I wouldn't be surprised if Gil was too, Enkidu and all. Although they did initially bond over whores.
>>93546018
Is Sluggy still going?
That arc with Oasis in the mental home was pretty good. That Which Redeems was the best arc though.

I thought the third one died and first Darkstar took over the body of a Dire Wraith (which had killed the third Darkstar and was pretending to be her)

There was literally a controversy when that book came out because the Editor didn't think Herc was bi and thought that only happened in an alternate universe
Hob Gadling, from Sandman, and Christopher Rudd (I wish I had a better picture of him), from Lucifer, both were both like completely normal human beings but each one had a part in a game way bigger than themselves.
Hob was one of Dream's only friends, and the first immortal man we met, his edition, Man of Good Fortune is one of my favorites.
Rudd was a poor tortured soul from hell, his suffering was used as a drug by demons, but even after centuries he never gave up hope, that made him catch an eye of a demon baroness that freed him and made him her lover. Anyway plot happens and he becomes lord of fucking Hell and his assistance was a major factor for Lucifer's plan of stopping world's end. Dude was a born a dude, spent years being tortured and ended as lord of hell, he is such a fucking baddass I'm fucking mad there aren't any good pics of him.

>There was literally a controversy when that book came out because the Editor didn't think Herc was bi and thought that only happened in an alternate universe
Wait, which book? I don't understand the context here quite
>>93545093
So,

* Green skin woman is some Inhuman

Guy in purple and yellow is the Wraith.

Dan Abnett's Hercules solo where Gilgamesh was his slobby friend crashing on his couch
Alonso said that Hercules is straight and didn't understand that not only is mythological Herc bi as hell, he failed to realize that Pak had written him as bi in the Incredible Hercules series a few years back.
http://www.cbr.com/marvel-addresses-hercules-sexuality/
And then Alonso made fun of people who were upset by this by retweeting this

That was a fun little series.

>You need to read those comics more intently.
Dude, what? Most of us probably haven't read those comics, and are more interested in the premises than some titles we can't attach to anything.
>>93547647
Well that's retarded, Herc is bi as fuck. I'n prett sure Northstar wasn't even the only canon example. That doesn't mean he needs to go bang dudes in all his books or anything but it's there.
>>93546300
I think so, though I think the writer announced it would "stop being a daily webcomic" soon (whatever that means). And the one where Riff travelled to that alternate universe (it came right after bROKEN, I think) was the best arc, I feel.
>>93487586

From top to bottom, left to right:
-La Bandera, a Cuban mutie that teamed up with Wolverine once
-Elejea, Medusa's handmaiden and bodyguard
-The Wraith I, Jean DeWolff's brother and sort of supervillain
-Grizzly, member of Cable's mercenary group
-Reverb, member of the first Gene Nation
-Darkstar II, Ruskie superhero
-Impulse I(?), member of the Sh'iar Imperial Guard
>>93550997
Then why'd he fug Northstar?
>>93483686

I miss old Drax. I liked the big dumb oaf and how beastly he could be when he wanted.
But thanks to the success of the movies, he'll never revert back to his old self.

Reed fixed his face at the end of Secret Wars, now Doom is going around playing Iron Man.
And that's a far better face than that promotional image that made him look like Tim Allen.

Y'all are good people.
Hands down, the Imperfects. They were all super well designed, each had different and unique back stories, and for whatever reason, Marvel never tried to bring them into the normal continuity. They could have done a lot with them. But nope. The only thing awesome to come out of that mediocre fighting game, and they didn't take advantage of it.
Except for the one time where that one artist accidentally drew the wrong Hazmat.

He was in Marvel vs Capcom 3. He's not that obscure.
>>93567090
>>93567187
For some people "obscure" seems to be "literally anyone below Batman level". There's more than a few examples of characters that aren't remotely obscure.
This guy right here. He's my favorite comic character of all time. I wish he got more recognition. The video games were actually really good, but I think his story is worth revisiting in another medium like an animated series on Netflix or something. Honestly, for characters from the 90's, the Top Cow universe has aged much better than a lot of the Image stuff, but unfortunately people just like to hop on the LOL THE 90'S SUCKED bandwagon and like to pretend everything from the 90's was terrible.
One of THE most forgotten DC superheroes. Even had his own miniseries at one point.
>>93562827
Fucking this
>Except for the one time where that one artist accidentally drew the wrong Hazmat.
& it was amazing. Even revealed that Marvel still owns them infact.
Nobody remembers Valeria...
Dial H for Husk from X-Patrol should have had her own ongoing that ran for 1000 issues.
Also XTC/Brainiac's Daughter. Only in like 3 panels in Kingdom Come but I always wanted to know her backstory.

Tellos?
She only appeared in the Star Masters mini, where she kicked ass and flirted with Silver Surfer and lifted Stormbreaker, then got brought back for like five minutes during War of Kings but she was bald and crazy and hated Gladiator, then she just vanished again.
Such a waste.
