Both Amy and Sally were insufferable characters in the comic preboot. Amy was just a walking joke and Sally's character was so inconsistent most of her fans have to specify which issues they liked her most in. She was exactly like Amy at the start of the comic but after a while the comic kind of started to become her story featuring Sonic. I think that's what bothers people more than anything. The relationship between them was sometimes tolerable but it usually led to some pretty horrid writing that you could tell was just to kill time or was just so poorly done that it was hard to read.

Reboot Sally and Amy are both much better than their older iterations for multiple reasons. Amy is an integral part of the team and the crush isn't the focal point of her entire character anymore. She's just a young girl doing her best to help and even provides a side of compassion and patience to the team. Sally doesn't demand nearly as much time for herself as she did in older issues and her design is much neater and fits much better into the universe she's in. She makes a lot of mistakes and isn't always the one character to solve a problem. Sucks the comic died just as writers and artists figured out what works.

I bet it's SEGA majorly raising the licencing fee both due to the current lawsuit and the fact that this is a HUGE year for Sonic and Archie should have made a ton of money from two major video game releases causing large interest in the brand, the third Mega Drive issue, and two large milestones.

Now everyone believes the comic is dead, there will likely be no issues coming this year and if it even returns, we'll likely see a major relaunch of the book with new No. 1's to get attention to make sure people know it's back.

If Sonic Mania works to help revive Sonic's reputation, a new comic book tie-in would seem to be a really safe bet to make some merchandise related money for SEGA. Because if you didn't know, the new game is very retro style and I would expect a new Sonic comic book to fit in with the 'Classic Sonic' style.

Sonic Boom recently got added to a lot of different countries Netflix list and you can already buy Sonic Sneakers, I expect more merchandise to come if Mania (or Forces, lol) does well.
