AHHHHHHHHHH how the fuck did this happen? Seriously, why aren't people buying her book?
>>
>>93435157
>17K copies

Image Comics that sell at 10K are considered big successes.

Captain Marvel has exactly zero pop culture presence aside from Earth's Mightiest Heroes and a few video games appearances. The Brie Larson movie is aimed at 2018. She's basically a blank.

There's no reason she would be a popular character.

why we can´t have a strong sexy and Heterosexual woman for once?
>>

I don't get marvel's thinking here. THrey want to push her hard but every time they relaunch her it's a shit creative team. You'd think after 6 failed ongoings they'd finally put some A+ talent on her.

Because western culture has associated being feminine with being weak.

Which is why "strong female characters" are almost always masculine as fuck and are just men with boobs.

>>93435592
It is less generic that what she got now to be honest, not necessarily better, but the SCARF AS BELT is something, which is better then the outright "Nothing outstanding" that her current has.

Mus. Marvel has the best costume though, because it looks goofy as fuck.

>>implying that women are not portrayed as week in every culture
If anything the west always gave women more chances to look "strong" than other civilizations..
>>
>>93435487
I'm not sick of lesbians because they're either written shitty or obscure as hell.

If they just accepted that cheesecake lesbians can still be cheesecake FOR lesbians, maybe it'd be worth paying attention.

Like, man, a character can be sexy and serious and still be progressive. You don't have to check every box on the tumblr checklist at once.

>putting words in my mouth
You can have a strong female character without making them a butchy masculine dyke.

Look at japan. They have an entire genre about frilly little girly girls beating things up.

This trend of "empowering" women by erasing everything that's feminine about them and replacing it with masculine traits is kind of insulting.
>>
>>93435157
shes a lame character that marvel keeps trying to force down people throats, shes what cyborg is to DC.
>>
>>93435157

I don't think is the character's fault per say. But Marvel saturates the market with so many of their books that not only puts a hard limit on how many books a Marvel fan might be able to buy, but also spreads thin the talent they have (or lack of therefore).

Her new thing is being sad and dramatic.
Her Hulk-ness now works like Bruce's, rather than an intentional change that just lowers her inhibitions somewhat.

They're backpedaling on that for Legacy, though.
I'm sure the book will still be mediocre.
>>

Not anymore.
>>
It's not selling because there isn't a trailer out yet for the movie.

>>93436270
The first volume of the KSD run is selling pretty well continually but the rest still sell poorly.

Here's the real reason they won't cancel it:
When a movie comes out, people go out and buy the trades.

However, Carol only became Captain Marvel and got the costume she's gonna have in the movie a couple years ago. The only trades they have to sell prior to that are with Ms. Marvel and the male Captain Marvel, neither of whom will be in the movie.

Her book is being kept going solely to build up as many trades to sell as possible, that's literally all there is to it. They do the same thing for everything Marvel Studios announces, but the situation was bad for Inhumans, Captain Marvel and Guardians of the Galaxy, who had relatively little material to reprint. That's why they've pushed Carol and the Inhumans so hard and why they started a new GotG series immediately after the movie was announced, but I don't think they expected it to be a big hit so you didn't see them get pushed as hard until afterwards.
>>
>>93435487

Considering that carol black outfit is high cut, Wonder Woman looks like wearing a diaper.
Also she has thigh high boots and the scarf, and her simbol on the costume is really well placed, the costume consist of a lot of different "generic" stuff from other characters, but aesthetics on the final result are good, unlike the garbage of suit she is using now.

>>

I'm pretty sure at this point they've got something like eight or nine trades out, more if you count tie-ins, for Captain Carol. GotG had four or five trades, IIRC.

That's a gimmick to more more copies.

Legacy is just 2017's annual Marvel relaunch, with a minor focus on ditching some recent changes to characters.

Captain Marvel has always been C/B list character that Marvel tries to force onto fans... even Mar Vell and Genis didn't have good runs.

The original book was like in Marvel Comic Presents or Marvel Premier one of the two and the Peter David Genis Vell book lasted only like 3 years which is an eternity considering how short books last nowadays but that's pretty bad compared to how books used to be

Yea the example is a bit exaggerated but my point stands: there was nothing about Carol that made her stand out / appear to be more than just a fat chested, blonde broad who punches shit sometimes. If a redesign is what it takes for people to get invested in her, then it is what it is.

Real talk; I didn't bther with Carol's previous runs before the redesign until the redesign was a thing. She was borning aesthetic wise. I don't understand how you can jusify such a dull ass design.

Yes, there were stuff that made her stand out over her female peers at Marvel. The dykecut is merely there to make her look more masculine for whatever reason.

Literally the same design with shorter hair.
Your argument is fucking retarded since the strong womyn archetype tends to have dykehair, so basically she's not only dull, but also looks like shit now.
The mohawk now, that's a design that actually made her stand out.

And just to finish your example was also pretty stupid no one confuses Magik for Emma Frost let alone for Susan Storm. And certainly no one with a functioning brain confused long haired Carol for any of them.

Going by Bookscan, Captain Marvel vol 1: In pursuit managed to make it on the 2013 chart, and Captain Marvel vol 1: Higher, Further, Faster, More managed to make it on the 2014 and 2015 charts. But nothing showed up on the 2016 chart which probably means that they probably got lower reorders for that year. None of the other volumes charted which probably means that they got less than 4000 in a year even as a new release.

You're also putting a lot of your argument behind how much you dislike ~masculine~ design tropes with women which leads me to believe you have no fucking idea what you're talking about.

Carol before the redesign was a lame looking character. It took her being a sloppy, angry drunk to give her some sort of personality but no comic-browsing person would give her stories a second shot BECAUSE SHE HAD A SLEEP INDUCING LOOK.

>>
>>93447342

>>
>>93447392
Well that and to the mainstream audience she's much more of a "female derivative" than Carol. You can synthesize an origin for CarolCap without involving Mar-Vell or leaning on anything to suggest she's not the original. They've already done that. It's their main goal too.

You can also have CarolCap operate in a world where Mar-Vell already exists and she still does what she does anyway.

You cannot make a She-Hulk origin that's accessible to mainstream audience that is not heavily reliant on the Hulk. And then you have to get them to swallow a name like She-Hulk.

We can do it. Younger audiences can do it. But normies almost definitely can't. Not even in a world with a talking tree & raccoon being box office draws.

Such is life.
>>
>>93447392
Why? Isn't She-Hulk tied to Hulk's rights, which they have? Or is it tied to the Fantastic Four because she was a member once? That'd be ridiculous.
>>
You know how Civil War was one of the most hated comic events of our generation? Maybe a sequel to it, staring the character they're trying to promote as the next AAA lister, wasn't the best idea.
>>
>>93447769
It's a weird distribution rights thing. She's held by Marvel but Marvel splits distribution rights with Universal when it comes to Hulk except when he's part of a team that isn't part of the character rights that were worked out for the pre-existing Hulk deal. It's why there's not been a solo Hulk movie in awhile. Universal worked out a deal where they would always get a cut.

Sorry for big reply. TLDR at bottom
Because the way they work is different

>Consumption
Manga series come out in weekly or monthly instalments (usually), but are almost exclusively in anthology magazines

You don't pay 5 bucks for fancy coloured collectable floppies with 20 pages. You pay 5 bucks for a newsprint magazine with up to a dozen different comics in it. This means you get your favourite comics, as well as exposure to new shit you might not have tried otherwise.

Then, if you want something long term and pretty, you get the tankobon (think the equivalent of a TPB, collected instalments)

I've heard it said that Americans don't buy/like anthologies, so you'll never get anything like manga over here. Also Marvel and DC aim hard for collectors rather than just mass appeal.

>Mangaka
Manga creators for the most part work like dogs. There is a common picture that goes around >>93429502 that shows a mangaka's work week. No time for being a shitter on twitter with that kind of schedule

Mangaka also tend to have several assistants. Putting out 20 pages each week isn't easy, even if it's only black and white.

Lastly, mangaka get small salaries but solid royalties off their work. In 2010, Oda of One Piece was earning something like $24m USD per year. So they got a real incentive to work as hard as they do. Big mangaka make big money.

>Variety
Comics used to have more variety. In fact, romance comics used to be very popular a few decades back. We don't really have that any more. It's mostly action and comedy only.

Manga still has all that shit. If you want romantic comedy, you get it. If you want generic powerlevel shit, you get it. If you want straight-up nudity and fanservice, you get it. If you want an action adventure cooking spaghetti western horror comedy manga, there is something for you.
Manga fills just about every niche,

TL;DR - the way you buy manga, variety of manga and the way manga is made is vastly different.

>They have an entire genre about frilly little girly girls beating things up.
The magical girl genre was more about enforcing feminine stereotypes on girls, but it could be seen as female empowerment too, if that's your cup of tea.
