I guess. It was a really good movie, but Zootopia had it beat in everything but soundtrack. It was over shadowed by a movie released earlier the same year.
There's also the fact that Disney has this expectation of quality that makes a good movie seem somewhat underwhelming. There's no surprises, it's just what you'd expect.

At least it was better than Kubo.

Too bad Laika is the only truly competent animation studio in this day and age that actually put effort into their animation and storytelling instead of just pressing a bunch of buttons for several days and hoping to appeal to the lowest common denominator with a "lol, they made an obligatory adult joke" shit.

In a recent "Pizza-Party Podcast" (I swear I'm going somewhere with this, not just giving Pan free publicity) they had Mike Mozart on there, and he made the comparison between Moana and The Little Mermaid that in the latter, people were quoting the movie left and right whereas in Moana, people just consumed it and wasn't really conducive to being engrained in people's minds.

This movie was garbage

1. Boring characters. Both of them look disgusting. Moana looks generic at best.

2. Entire boring plotline on a fucking boat

3. Rehashed backstories. Moana is an Ariel rip off

4. Jokes are flat or they trying to be meta

5. Songs were horrible, so forgetable and not catchy at all. They were mostly spewing exposition in most cases.

6. The forced chicken and little tatoo guy tried too hard as typical Disney mascots

7. The cute lovable pig was false advertising, and didn't actually go on the quest as the trailers implied he would

8. That fucking ending, good to know the main hero is responsible for the death of everyone who ever dies, and not only goes scott free, but also gets rewarded

Seriously fuck this movie. A typical production made by black suits and created out of every Disney archetype. Seriously making a main character a woman or black will automatically have critics rate this as 95% on rotten tomatoes. Fucking brainless SJW's.

YOU SHUT YOUR DIRTY FILTHY WHORE MOUTH RIGHT FUCKING NOW YOU CUNT!
Sorry I got triggered, but Ariel is the best Disney princess of all time! OF ALL TIME!

The little mermaid is perfect in every possible way!

It's perfect in every way, shap and form.
All of Disneys best animators of the time worked on it so the animation and characters are amazing
You have a Divin Sea Witch.
Some of the best music to ever come out of Disney.
A classic non douchebag prince unlike the modern day Tangled / Frozen ones of today.
No forced black characters (no Sabastion doesn't count because hes a mother fuckin Awesome crab.)
A beautiful half naked Disney princess thats willing to shut up forever and sells her voice just so she can get legs which she can spreed for her Prince. Now thats a mother fucking good girl right there.
Some say ...
> b-but Ariel has such a weak motivation

I ask those anons to not be so harsh. She was 16 and it was true love. How do you know it was true love ? Because "at 16 it's always true love." ~ Zelda Spellman
Besides I like that her character was slightly dopy. It made her wide eyed / childlike which made her more loveable. You feel the need to put your arm around a person like that and protect / love her forever.

I wish this was true, anon, but try saying that to a black lives matters protester type. Even when Disney created a 2D fully animated princess movie for them they still found something to bitch about.

Disney was forced to change The Frog princesses name from Maddy to Tiana or Laquisha because ...

And that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the long list of things they bitched about with that film.

Your Welcome was the only song in this whole thing that didn't come across as a character just reading out their own bio, even though that's sort of what he was doing.
The village song about using coconut fibers was trite, Moana's theme was so ham-fisted she even shouts her own name, the fucking title of the movie by the way, at the end. Even "shiny" only sort of gets a pass because Jemaine Clement sounds like David Bowie a little bit but it was almost a Big Lipped Aligator of a scene. He even fucking asks "did you at least like the song?" as Maui and Moana escape.

Visually it had a lot going for it and its neat to see other mythologies get used but I think there's a good reason it didn't catch on with audiences. An ultimately boring story with forgettable songs. and a Disney movie needs to hit at least one of those marks correctly.

I still feel cheated though. I wanted to see more of that little pig. I was going to drop $50 on a bigplush of the pig , but when I found out that his character is basically non-existent in the film I didn't . He could have been the next Flounder or Olaf. He could have been one of the greats. This Princess movie is already lacking a prince. It really could have used a cute side kick character. Would it have killed Disney to just throw old school Disney fans a bone.

>>93440245
Even during tv ads the pig is shown interacting with Maui, and the ocean, yet in the film the pig never even meets those characters.

It's false advertising at its lowest. They are trying to sucker people into the theaters with the promise of Disney's next cute , adorable princess sidekick, but the pig is nothing more than a false flag.

It's like going to see Frozen after viewing all the tv ads, and seeing all the artwork of the talking snow man Olaf only to find out after you've paid for your ticket that the Snow man doesn't go on the adventure with Anna, and is only in the film for 29 seconds.

Here's just another of many examples of this false advertising.

>Go to store
>See Moana box set
>Printed text on the box says "Moana of Oceania's friends join her on an action-packed voyage."

No THEY DON'T. Only the retarded chicken goes on the voyage.

The pig was supposed to go on the adventure, and the rooster was going to be a grumpy, uptight, douchebag. They would be contrasts. The helpful, sweet, silly pig, and grumpy uptight rooster that would try to stop Ariel....I mean "Moana" and get her back home aka grumpy uptight Sebastian the Crab, and cute lovable Flounder.

That is why a good portion of the toys, and other merchandise for the film heavily feature the pig, and even feature the rooster looking like an angry uptight jerk. Disney started to fear that Moana was starting to appear way to similar to The Little Mermaid formula, and people would notice so they ended up redesigning the Rooster as an idiot that worked for comic relief, and they decided to leave the pig off the adventure all together to avoid the Flounder/ Sebastian comparisons.

Because Disney is greedy they still decide to use the pig heavily in promo materials because pigs are cute, and people like cute things so they say "let's pretend the pig is still a sidekick, (even though hes not) and sucker more money out of fans who enjoy classic Disney cute sidekick characters."

I somewhat disagree.

Moana had a drive to explore and sail, and her idea to sail and fish beyond the reef was ultimately the better idea. Her small acts of caring for animals altruistically are all it took for the ocean to side with her, and she's the one necessary to help Maoi, and is generally just kinda always right. Her struggle at the end didn't feel earned and she doesn't learn anything. In a sense, I suppose it could've worked better if there was more buildup of the volcano spirit as a threat and how Moana was fulfilling her grandmother's role of recognizing the purpose and value in people, but if that was the intention it didn't get across very well. Moana didn't learn anything.

Umm.... no, The mental gymnastics you are going though to implying that I'm making things up is amazing. Do you just not know anything about the making of Moana or do you just enjoy pulling flawed information out of your ass ?

Disney stated that the rooster was going to be the grumpy jerk aka Sebastian type character who would try to convince Moana to go back home where she belonged, and that the pig was going to be the lovable supportive sidekick aka Flounder.

They even released artwork of the grumpy uptight rooster, and lovable pig duo
>image very related

>>93442345
I understand this, anon, however the decision to kill the pig as a lovable sidekick character happened very early on in the films development process. They had time (over a year) to not feature the pig while creating the final promo materials for the film, but still did so "for reasons" aka Disney decided the cute pig would help get more butts into theater seats so they still sold the idea to the public that the pig would be going on the voyage even though they knew fully well he had already been axed from the film over a year ago.

As an anon, I have consumed more than my fair share of porn over the decades but the only italian pornstars I have ever heard about is Rocco (because who hasn't) and Cicciolina (ran for mayor of Rome, iirc).

I live about 2000 KM north of spaghetti land, but it's called Vaiana here as well.

city was a dystopian hellhole were predators were treated worse than jews and blacks during WW2,they had to wear collars that electrocuted them whenever they felt stronger emotions (like anger, sadness or happiness), Nick was the protagonist who's only "crime" was making a ghetto for his fellow predator friends, and Hopps was a racist bunny that chased him.

They developed this story for two years, but couldn't figure out the ending.WDAS asked for advice and Pixar facepalmed after seeing the whole thing.

That's probably because it was just standard 'okay'. Not bad, not great, just okay. I liked the characters and the settings and the music but the idea somehow feels like it isn't fully realized.
>>
>>93439604
The backstory for the character is literally that he got thrown out by his mom for being Kill It With Fire ugly. Now granted it wasn't accurate to the mythology in question (his mother threw him away because he was a premature birth and that scared her, not because he was ugly) but as far as the movie is concerned there is an actual reason for the ugly design.
>>
>>93434967
It was alright, the reliance on supernatural powers kind of undercut potential character development and introduced weird plotholes, why did the sea help and try to drown Moana and shit. Could she have managed to get anything done without the help of a literal demigod. Why didn't the sea just shoot a water spout at the lava monster to hold it in place.

Her father destroyed every possession she held close to her heart. Even he knew he went to fare as he left her crying on the floor.

Even as a grown ass man, I personally related to Moana's love of the ocean. http://www.cinemablend.com/news/1590280/the-hilarious-character-moana-almost-cut-and-why

They had the rooster acting grumpy and it just wasn't working with the story, They almost cut him out completely before they went back and made him retarded and were able to add more gags to the movie because of it. The promo posters were made before the movie was even done being animated and some of them still depicted Hei Hei looking stern.

In regards to Pua the pig, HE was originally the one to go with Moana and they meet Maui in a different situation as seen with the initial teaser trailers (the "Because I'M Maui.." one).
Ron Clements decided that Pua represented home and comfort to Moana and thus should be left behind when she leaves.

Also it's a Disney fantasy. They are supposed to make characters look cute, and good looking. Even the characters who aren't supposed to be good looking are expected to look some what appealing like the Beast from Beauty & the Beast. It's their job.

>Maui isn't described as attractive in Polynesian myths

The hideous Beast from Beauty & the Beast was described as a literal monster/beast, and yet The Beast's merch still sells like hot cakes to this day.
Why? Because Disney was able to find the perfect middle ground between appealing character design and "HOLY FUCKING KILL IT WITH FIRE" ugly.

Don't take my word for it though. The proof is in the unsold Maui merch. His $59.99 talking doll has been marked down to $19.95 for months at my local Walmart stores, and they still can't sell this ugly thing. Same dolls have been sitting on the shelves since the movie was released to theaters.

I liked Kubo, but the pacing did feel off.

I think Laika's at its best when its focusing more on quiet exploration and less on comic relief banter. The intro with Kubo taking care of his mother was easily my favorite bit of the movie.

>Moana is a legit 10/10 movie

A tripfag with a cancerous opinion. Typical.

>It should have been postponed to a year later, to avoid being overshadowed by Zootopia.

When your pick for a 10/10 movie is such generic drivel that you actually suggest that Disney should have postponed Moanas release date by two full years in order to make sure that the movie going audience has fully forgotten what a good, and original film should look like. Making your generic flick look not as crappy in comparison to a better film.

Zootopia is literally indefensible

Zootopia could have been great, if it was released at Moana's time slot.(Holliday season). But nope, let's rush it and be done. Then save entire 2017 to praise mexicans with Cars 3 and Coco.

In terms of entertainment. It isn't fair to put the songs up side by side because Trollz had used established hits. Moana has pacing issues and the music is more of a crutch than a device. It felt more broadway than Disney.

>Defiant female lead goes against her overbearing father to pursue something that lies beyond her boundaries because she's such a free spirit

I know there was a time when this concept was novel for Disney movies because their earliest female characters were bland as bread, but it's fucking stale as shit now.

Good but would've been great if Maui was the protagonist
He's much more interesting, plus he has best song

they're right. Having the collars makes the message less poignant people would have gone "oh the prey are oppressing the predators".Then it becomes a movie of waiting for Judy to figure it out too. revealing it out like they did hits harder. It's also works because it's realisticwis they kept that thought with the ending.
>>
>>93464150
It also leads to the inevitable question of "Why would the predators even agree to the shock collars?"

Zootopia is better than the dullest movie of 2016? Seriously each act following the boy samurai and anthro pals as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gorgeous imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of storytelling, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Knight vetoed the idea of himself directing the series; he made sure the movie would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody? Just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion by a shoe company. The Kubo movie series might be weeb (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-Zootopia movie in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

>a-at least the animation was good though

"No!" The animation is okay; but the pacing is off. As I read, I noticed that every time a character went for a banter, the author concentrated on it more than on action.

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that banter was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Knight's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Kubo and the Two Strings by the same The guardian. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are watching Kubo and the Two Strings at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to watch Zootopia." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you watch "Kubo and the Two Strings" you are, in fact, trained to watch Disney.

Gotta agree. Rewatched it and I gotta say, the characters are better, the story is better, the setting is better, the jokes are better, the monsters were better in Moana though. I do love the kakamora. Psycho gremlins in coconut armor is pretty damn good.

They were outnumbered and indoctrinated, if they caused any trouble prey had a boar commando armed with swords and miniguns who "took care" of them, the villain's plan was to mark all predators as savage beasts, and, in best case, kick them out of city.
it's pretty obvious who prey represented

I liked Moana but I feel they should have shown more sea monsters trying to attack them because it made it seem like there journey was very safe.

this

the whole plot was just lackluster. moana's main conflict was her learning how to sail properly.

it could have been an epic quest through the underworld with her and maui using their wits and working together to travel and escape unharmed, but the underworld ended up having very little to do with their journey at all. the biggest villain had his song and was done in less than ten minutes, and the "real" villain wasn't really a villain at all. there was a lot of potential with moana and it felt like they set up something really great, but it ended up falling flat.

it's like if you spent a lot of time talking about how the characters had to climb a huge, perilous mountain, spent time describing all of the things that could go wrong, what rewards lay at the peak, and then the characters walked around it.

I had a great look, good character design, fantastic songs, and much more. But the story fell flat. It was there but just didn't really work well.

It could have been a lot better than it was.

It wasn't bad though.
