At a glance (and in terms of panelling), yes, but it's effectively the equivalent of a page in something like Bleach where the villain warps behind the hero, tells the how everything is according to their keikaku, and the hero readies their ace in the hole. This setup (villain gets upper hand, explains smugly, hero starts to counter) is a great full page cliffhanger technique...when used at the end of a chapter or issue. Page-by-page releases neuter that application because the wait is consistent between every page.

This could still work for setting the mood, but that's not accomplished either. The shots are standard and uncreative. The mood isn't conveyed in a strong, visual way --yeah, it has very basic "bad guy in shadows, good guy in light," but that doesn't tell us how dire the situation seems or the spark of hope with Fred's trump card -- and the sheer number of panels prohibits the page from breathing.

It's utilitarian, but not effective. It could work as a splash page, a splash panel with smaller insets to break up the moments, or just three or four panels. If the focus is on the events occurring to move the plot rather than the mood, it doesn't even need to be half the page. The whole thing is a product of writing a story and then drawing the page quickly instead of taking page composition as part of scriptwriting.

Damn. I guess Morbi really is just perfect at page composition and I'm crazy to doubt his effectiveness at the thing he doesn't want to do anymore.

But really, a lot of my problems with the comic are in how it's presented than the writing or art. Even if updates are less frequent, I think the revised format will allow Morbi to provide more meaningful content per update. It takes far less time to describe elements that influence mood than it does to visially convey them.

Oh, not even that, I'm not clamoring for a sidecharacter to get melodramatic shots. Just saying that the page space and actions can be better utilized, whether to make the current version more effective or to keep it brief and add more content. I'd make doodles of some solutions, but I won't have access to my tablet until this evening.

All Morbi really had going for him is that he was actually putting effort in making a comic. Without it he is just another tumblrina with his mediocre doodles. That splash where Poppy catches a giant catfish supposedly shows him being serious about illustrating something and it looks like a WIP.
